Alice in wonderland comparisons end at the magical door to another world. Spirited Away is animation at its best. Tightly paced, constantly charming and exciting without being annoying or overbearing like every Disney movie since Beauty and the Beast.
The story is not about a girl trying to escape from a bad life, or any variation of that movie archetype, rather it's a story about the willpower and strength of youth, with the typical Miyazaki strong-willed female, though perhaps the most memorable of all his female leads, which is extremely high praise.
There is also a strong environmental message to be found here, lamenting greed and pollution, and so forth.
But most of all, its a visceral thrill with wonderful, imaginative creatures (the multi-armed furnace worker immediately comes to mind) which inhabit the wonder-inspiring Demon sauna, all supported by fluid and bright animation that sets the bar for modern animation.
This movie won the academy award for best animated feature, sure, its just a shame the academy hasn't had the sense to nominate any of his films for best pictures, or best foreign films. But the Academy's lack of sense is a whole other issue, needless to say if he doesn't get a lifetime achievement at some point it would be a tragedy to say the least.
Like most of his movies, this is a perfect 10. Inspirational and memorable, and rewatchable (something few movies achieve for me) | |
