I dislike being the first one to review this and give a relatively low score, but not much went on here. While the premise was science-fiction-ish, the pace was quite slow. A slow pace isn't a bad thing, in fact, it was much more relaxing than expected, however, things felt very uneventful when there was plenty of drama put out.
A number of characters were used very poorly, more notably, the Brinberg (German) siblings. The pair were quite unlikeable and didn't get much spotlight. In fact, the behind-the-scenes "problem" didn't get much focus at all. By the end of the series, I'm not sure what was 'solved'.
In my opinion, the characters were quite annoying in the beginning. Chinami, the main character, has had her E-type power her whole life, but still has trouble controlling it? Her shy demeanor lacked charm. Sonomi, Kanagi's childhood friend, had an opposing personality to Chinami; she too, was annoying. Fortunately, there were a number of characters that were cool such as yuudere Saihashi or the cute Keiko. Annoying at first, but Chinami and Sonomi become more likeable as you watch more Code-E.
The opening is quite misleading for it has a detective-like song with a modern jazz tune. Anyone is a fan of a detective story so I looked forward to watching Code-E based on the OP, unfortunately, the story never lead to anything deep.
There were definitely some engaging and funny moments. The vast, colourful personalities were fun to watch. The character designs were very cute. The art was wonderful, there were lush colours for the backgrounds, and there were some notable scenes that were really pretty. I really liked how they portrayed friendship through Chinami and Saihashi.
Instead of displaying a supernatural ability as a weapon, Code-E poses EMP emitting as a disruption in life, most people probably didn't expect this (and perhaps will be disappointed), but this is a very interesting intake. My overall impression: good, but not excellent. | |
