Happy Seven is not an anime that was well-produced, or an anime that I particularly enjoyed. Sure, there's an interesting start with the emphasis of "luck", however, nothing that was executed was done well. The characters were a snore, interaction between the characters were largely ridiculous, and the story never advanced to any great potential.
I watched this anime in hopes of some silly, fluffy shoujo romance. However, what they presented gave me plenty temptation to roll my eyes. Happy Seven had the most ridiculous harem I've ever seen. Okay, it doesn't beat Sister Princess or Negima!? but it's high up in the ranks. This boggled me a bit though, I thought this anime was shoujo.
Happy Seven is also very "Sailor Moon". The characters all dominate some colour, there are 'naked' transformations, and there's always inane battle sequences. Another "Sailor Moon" trait is Kikunosuke-kun, who literally is the knight-in-shining-armor that graciously saves a girl. Being like Sailor Moon isn't a fault, it can actually be quite fun, it's just that it's been seen and done. The most annoying thing about this anime was the voice work for Shouko. Geez, I wanted to wring her neck, maybe she would lose her voice. Fortunately, I absolutely loved Kokuenten's voice work and character. Another character I liked was Mahiru. She had a strange fixation on anything fish-related; and her personality was very Ayanami Rei-like or Nagato Yuki-like; why can't this characteristic ever be a main character?
The only good thing about Happy Seven that is worth mentioning is that it's nice to look at. The colours are pretty, the characters are cute, and the costumes are very stylish. The Opening and Ending songs are "okay".
What this anime lacked was strong character-drive. I did not take interest in the main characters and thus couldn't care less about what happens to them. The behavior of each character was awkward from beginning to end. Personally, I find this anime quite mediocre. Happy Seven gave an interesting premise, but did not portray any good qualities in the story. | |
