True Tears is a very watchable short series. I found myself with that very familiar sort of "I just saw this" vibe as the story unfolded. It is, in fact, so similar to a number of other anime that seemed to have just been released it's almost ridiculous. Is there really that little space available for innovation with the recent financial downturn the industry is beginning to face? Kimi Kiss, Shuffle, and EF, have so many deep plot similarities that it's frightening. I realize they are not exactly alike, but they go much further than just having stereotypical characters and parallel male leads.
I wouldn't call this show a harem anime, but it does follow the typical formula that has all females in the show basically liking and confessing to the male lead. In this addition to our romance library we have Shinichiro Nakagami meeting a somewhat odd Noe Isurugi, whose favorite friend in the world (a Rooster....), has just died and she decides Shinichiro is a suitable replacement. It’s a pretty fun opening premise at first glance. The characters have some fairly original traits but, as the story goes on, it becomes evident that all roads lead to Shinichiro. He also has ties to a live-in friend/love interest that may or may not be his half sister and a childhood friend who he hooked his buddy up with. Throw in a bit of forbidden sibling emotions and we have our story. Like I said, it's pretty good but very familiar.
I could go on ad-nauseum about how the art and the setting are very good, but it does come down to story and it falls somewhere between good and above average. I must be spoiled or just desensitized at this point but I can't give this a great score. I recommend this as a pleasant watch to pass the time. Hey, you may like it. Why not?
