Wow. I don't think I've watched anything from Studio 4C. Watching Detroit Metal City definitely reminded me of those short Gyagu Manga Biyori episodes. They have abrupt scene transitions, awkward facial expressions, poor animation/art, but I know they're quite funny. I'd say they have off-coloured humour. Think of South Park or Ren & Stimpy.
The opening was a shocker. They introduce the anime with some heavy metal music and the most vulgar sounding lyrics I've ever heard. The band that plays definitely goes for a shock-factor. The emo kids would certainly enjoy something like this. And yet, even with the obscure lyrics of "killing, raping, slaughtering your family", it was overall kind of amusing. Probably because the silly presentation through meager art and animation.
It's a short OVA, but held a great premise. It was sort of a mind opener. A route to a different perspective. Just how do these heavy rockers live their lives? Are all of them really drug abusers and do what they say in their lyrics? Do they ever get tired of what they do?
Yeah. The ending wasn't so great. It ended with little conclusion and a rather girly song. The way they ended it left more of a chuckle than a feel for completeness.
Just how they presented things was hilarious. There's plenty of comedic bits and irony. I especially found it funny when the girl was singing and a Detroit Metal City song was playing in the background at the same rhythm. Detroit Metal City is a fun short and I've already got a few people to watch it. | |
