Special A does have many faulty areas. For one, the main character, Hikari, was as dense as a doorknob. How could she be second place of the school when she seems so dull. Also, the visual effects for the "action" scenes were lackluster. If they improved the animation for a lot of the movements, things would be much more impressive. The music! The opening theme was horrible. I'm one of those people that always sit through the openings, but the 1st OP I could. not. stand. It almost reached the level of Love Love's Opening.
So why such a good rating? A nine?
I enjoyed it. While there is much to be improved on, the faults within this anime did not intrude when enjoying this series. I can clearly remember laughing out loud or being swooned by the events. The situation or situations between Kei and Hikari were endearing - iyauuu~
Special A gave me romance. Heart tingly, what-I-haven't-seen-in-a-while romance. Though I wasn't too keen about Hikari's personality, her thick headedness gave me the joy of indulging in extensive romantic situations. There was also romance between other characters too, which I found very cute.
This was like Ouran Host Club. It's about a poor girl surrounded by rich kids, and there is comedy here and there. However, I enjoyed the characters in Special A. Akira, Ryuu, or Megumi can easily be one of my favourite characters. I love Akira for her showy personality. She doesn't hold back showing her love for Hikari nor her aggression to Tadashi. I love animals, so Ryuu's character definitely resonated with me. Ryuu also gave ample comedy. Hah! Thinking over those scenes make me giggle still. Also, Megumi. I found her very cute in that she used the writing board to dislplay her thoughts (I loved how they would use the rattle sound whenever she 'said' something). Her voice was surprisingly too high for my tastes, but what can you do.
The competitions were silly, the main plot was not solid, some characters were wishy-washy but that didn't take away my overall enjoyment of Special A. This anime gave light-hearted fun that I haven't seen in a while. I wish they could have developed Hikari's and Kei's relationship more, however, there was still plenty of "iyauu~" moments for me <3 | |
