Truly a movie about finding your dreams and encountering romance. This was a very cute story that had a large number of perks. Of course, it's the characters that drive this storyline, and the system runs pretty smoothly. Whisper of the Heart was a lovely coming-of-age story that left my heart delighted and my mind relaxed.
I was already sunken in when we see the cat ride the subway train. The cat was super cute! He was the perfect representation of any animated cat, or stereotype... he was snooty, ignored most people, picky, and was somewhat wicked. It was adorable! The cat alone upped the anty for my enjoyment. He did play an important role to steering the storyline.
Few whimsical, mystic-inspired creativity in this one. But it was still fantastic. For just a film, I was easily wooed by the characters. Hayao Miyazaki always manages to make such attractive characters. They're endearing, modest, innately good. I was able to see myself in Shizuku in some ways.
Perhaps it was how I was brought up, but the one unrealistic thing that erked me were the parents. The mom and dad, how they dealt with the decision of Shizuku. I can never imagine any parent with trusting their daughter with such a significant situation. At such a young age too! It was not believable. Also, while I do love the romance, I felt some actions were much too soon. Things were a bit hasty. Yes, Whisper of the Heart is a movie, but some things could have been kept veiled. It seems the characters fall in love faster than Disney Princesses! (Think of The Little Mermaid, Sleeping Beauty, or Cinderella).
This is a feel good movie that focuses on growing up. The romance is very squirm-worthy (swoons). The characters were neat. I was moved in many ways; musically, creatively, simply inspirationally. You will find some holes, but I found myself hanging on to this film all the way through. The most similar work would probably be Kiki's Delivery Service. Whisper of the Heart was a lovely movie. Very cute.
