Battle Programmer Shirase

Battle Programmer Shirase was pretty awesome. In fact, I was debating whether to give this series a perfect score. Not to say it was perfect, but this short 15 episode anime was immensely enjoyable. I found if pretty funny. There were subtle anime references. There was sexual innuendo, and I get absolutely tickled at some of the over-the-top reactions.

Even if I do think BPS is great. This anime is not recommended for everybody. It fits only certain humour. I'd definitely steer this away from first-timers. The humour is not something widely err appreciated? If you're offended easily, I wouldn't look into this. Anyway, The animation was very underwhelming. The backgrounds were quite plain. Actually, things concerning art were unimpressive. However, this didn't bother me one bit. It did influence my first impression though. I thought BPS would be "boring". Glad I tried it out though.

Yes. There were repetitive scenes where an officer, business man, military official, or whomever would barge into Shirase's room and "catch him" in questionable actions. The man in uniform (all the men seem to have the same name), would go execute the same exaggerated speech. But because of their request, they act as if they didn't see anything. The only real complaint that I have is that there would be this studio laughter after each one. It seemed very forced and unfunny. Other than that, I really enjoyed these long-winded speeches and found them hilariously funny.

Aside with the cool hacking events and saturated comedic episodes, Battle Programmer Shirase managed to give me heart-panging romance as well. The romance was minimal, but very cute. It was enough to make me squirm. Also, there were great characters for this show. I really liked Yunoki, the chief programmer for the Navy. Yunoki was like Yuki (Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi) but more expressive. Yunoki was observant and knows of mature topics. I thought she was the most interesting character.

The OP was nice, it actually has the tune of the infamous RickRoll. Unfortunately, because of the OP/ED, and some introductory recaps. The episode substance actually lasted for 7-8 minutes. Boo.

BPS planned a sequel, but I guess they didn't pull through. Because of thise, there were a few characters that weren't built on further. I'd be very interested in watching the 2nd season. I really enjoyed watching BPS because of the interesting character personalities, "cool" hacking scenes, cute romance, and hilarity!
