Itazura na Kiss

I had my doubts about this anime with the first episode, but I am very happy that I pulled through and gave it a try. I went from being highly unimpressed to enjoying every episode.

The one word that propped in my thoughts multiple times was "wholesome". I think the word wholesome is the best way to describe Itazura na Kiss. I had a great experience. The characters really grew on me. This was largely possible because of the timespan played throughout the anime. You see the lives and interactions of Kotoko and Irie from Highschool until years after University graduation. Though the pacing was very fast, I didn't feel overwhelmed; events were still brought together very nicely.

Of course there are flaws in Itazura na Kiss. Plenty. The most glaring element, in my opinion, is the character design inconsistency. Even within an episode, you'd have the characters look very odd. You'll see square faces, round faces, eyes too close together, or far apart. Characters never really looked like themselves (especially Irie-kun). Secondly, you have the most annoying pair ever. I don't know why these characteristics are yearned for. We have Kotoko who is a COMPLETE clumsy/ditzy girl. Really... can anyone be THAT clumsy? Just seeing her mess everything up was really annoying. She's also a big crybaby. None of her initial actions were anything I would think up of. Then there's Irie... the seemingly cold and cocky b-stard that shows no sympathy (though I am guilty of swooning over anime characters like this). It's simply an odd thing to have two annoying characteristics as the main characters.

Anyway, my favourite character has to be "Mama", Irie-kun's mom. She was zany and very enjoyable to watch. Probably not the kind of mom everyone wants, but she did give some excellent theatrical entertainment. There are a lot of nit picky things one can frown upon, but it's the anime as a whole that was very nice. I loved the interaction between the couples, and I especially enjoyed the shoujo heart-throbbing romance it has to give. The second ending song intensified these burning love-love feelings. That song is on repeat ~ iyauu

I love happy endings :) it's so corny, cheesy, and unthinkable; but it leaves a great feeling. A good conclusion wraps things up nicely and definitely influenced my rating for this. Not many anime series out there have done what Itazura na Kiss did. This is the anime that executes the situations that happen after that "happily ever after" ending.
