Maria Holic had a zany style that was very addicting and fun. The mood changes drastically by the changing art styles. The art production staff sample all sorts of drawing styles such as the sparkly 80's shoujo (Candy Candy), manly shounen faces (School Rumble does this), and horrific angles. In fact the style is comparable to that of Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei. Just take a gander at the OP. This anime is quick paced and gives you slices of "questionable" material. Most of the time though, it's some tasteful fanservice.
I really enjoyed the first half of this anime. Not to say that Maria Holic is split into two arcs. I just found that the later half fell apart. It no longer had any charm or any humourous events. Events really stretched and dragged. Episode direction just went astray. It's very disappointing that Maria Holic failed to even conclude the main storyline. The episodes that added up to the last episode were very random and unimpressive. My standards were set too high from the first few episodes it seems.
What I really liked about Maria Holic were the interesting characters. Sure, Kanako is overly passionate about her fantasies, but that's what makes her Kanako. The cast of characters are very interesting. Nanami is by far the cutest one; she takes things to literally though. The Dorm Leader! Really ominous and mysterious. It's a bit cliche, but still funny. Mariya is the sadistic guy that is tickled to know that his "cute" acts attracts everyone. I loved the direct parts where he would say ex. "I'll stick it in." - GAH! Not something you see in any anime. Each character is pretty unique and memorable.
Unfortunately, Maria Holic is one of those anime series' that starts out REALLY GOOD, but falls at the end. This leaves a drastic poor impression. I had a marvelous time at first. Simply put, Maria Holic had a simple and easy-to-grasp story which they didn't end well (or at all...). The thing that I enjoyed most was the presentation style. The humour was fun, and the characters were unique. Difficult to recommend though. | |
