Natsume Yuujinchou is a beautiful piece. After completing it a while ago, I finally brought myself to write this review. It's not easy. This anime was very good, however, saying that is not enough. Somehow, Natsume Yuujinchou brought all cinematic elements together and made a very simple yet amazing production. The stories were solid, the characters were inimitable, and the pacing was wonderful.
Each episode is its own story. A piece with an introduction, middle, and end. The pacing is steady, but not boringly so. The story is very easy to follow and the supernatural events are well entertaining. There is always an underlying problem within the main story-block, which brings mystery in too.
With help of the OP and ED songs, each time you view this, you'll gain warmth and "fulfillment". Both the Opening and Ending songs are soothing and calm - not something you'd listen to for something stimulating, more for a rainy day. The anime itself is comparable to Mushishi, which has luminous art work. Natsume Yuujinchou feels less "one shot" though, since you see a small number of characters come and go.
It's a unique premise that utilizes the supernatural (yokai). Aside from the genre execution I absolutely loved the characters! Specifically the dialogue interaction between Nyanko-sensei and Natsume. The rotund cat can be cocky at times, but he can also be very cute! Their bickering, sometimes, is like those familiar Japanese comedy duo's.
I think anyone could watch Natsume Yuujinchou. It's easily recommendable and has a lot of good qualities. | |
