Ponyo was an all-around FUN film to watch. Character interactions were engaging, and the events were very easy to follow. This movie can easily be enjoyed by a young audience or the young at heart. I know I had chuckled or swooned at some cute moments. The overall feeling for Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea was mystifying, but at the same time down to earth.
Miyazaki offers a lot to the table in all his films. But I think the main entree to his creations are his characters. Characters in all movies I've seen are extremely charismatic and cute. They still shell a young innocence to them making it much more open to adventures. Basically, all his characters... have character. Ponyo was incredibly unique in all her "HAM" antics. There were also little tid-bits of background characters having some fun - acting really cute!
Another great main course that oftentimes goes overlooked is the animation. Ponyo was less extraordinary in its art compared to others, but the animation was still high quality. His animation has been a luxury, and we've been spoiled. So much solid effort into each production, and I really was tickled at the great artistry in this movie.
The one thing that bugged me about this film was the ridiculousness in some character actions. The main protagonists were around the age of 5, yet the adult characters didn't seem to notice that they're traveling on their own. No righteous parent would leave their preschooler on their own during a disastrous event! Which leads me to the next perk, how the mother, Lisa, would turn her cheek to the massive ocean waves and frightening winds! Her behaviour was as if she experiences these storms everyday. She was pulling Initial D driving in some scenes. Crazy!
In a nutshell, Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea is a very fun film. You'll warm up to the young characters easily. The sense of adventure is firm, and the magic leaves you feeling optimistic. Easily enjoyable! | |
