I was surprised to see the relatively low rating on this film. Thus, I guess I can say I'm sort of honoured to be the first to put up a deserved full five stars.
The animation in this film has been negatively described as ''dated'', though I can honestly see no reasons behind such a statement. The character designs are wonderful, and the whole thing moves fluidly and beautifully. The incredibly scenic and wonderfully done backgrounds only help giving this film its wonderful atmosphere. It could be described as dated, sure, but I'd take this kind of ''dated'' above the artificial looking computer-generated graphics of a lot of modern animation series any day.
The music was not duely impressive as a stand alone soundtrack, but it did its job to the best of its abilities, and exactly how a soundtrack should be for a movie of this kind. It fitted perfectly; the tunes did not overtake any scenes, nor was there a lack of it, but it simply complimented the tragic or nostalgic scenes wonderfully. Which is simply all it needed to do.
I can't very well judge the ''story'' or the ''characters'', because quite frankly, they can't be said to have been duely original. What impressed me was the grim realism. The characters were like they were taken from real life. This is one of the very few animation titles (If not the only) in existence for which I can truthfully make such a claim. This realism might turn off some people, though, because quite frankly, it's very different from your average animation, or live action movie for that matter.
The storytelling is what made the movie, so to speak. I can truthfully say I've never been quite as moved by any piece of cinema since ''Grave of the Fireflies'', which is an accomplishment I can give my undieing gratitude to. It's hard to accurately capture this facet of the movie in a review, so I'll just finish this whole thing off by stating what it did to me. Simply put, I cried throughout the movie. I am quite a movie-fanatic, animated or otherwise, but I can safely say this never happened before. Grave of the Fireflies made a bit of an impact on me, especially taking into consideration it caused me to be depressed for several days.
Nothing I have ever seen or read had this much of an impact to me, and that's really all the review I can give you. It's basically up to you to decide whether to watch it or not, but I advise you to read some other reviews as well. They might bring forth some personal views quite different from mine, and you should at least take those into consideration and decide for yourself which would be most like your own. | |
