[Story: 7.0] I can see why this series got so popular. Lyrical Nanoha started out as a textbook example of a series from the mahou shoujo genre, complete with transformation sequences, common themes such as friendship and an animal mascot to boot. Indeed, the first half of the show is mainly episodic encounters of Nanoha fighting the various minions. However, towards the second half of the show, with the introduction of Fate, the series is more having a touch of action shounen thrown in. The plot thus got rather serious (for a mahou shoujo genre, at least) and there are quite a fair bit of plot twists. Also, it’s got cool weapons – weapons that suits action shounen more than a mahou shoujo anime.
[Characters: 6.5] Personally, I found the characters to be rather weak; Nanoha is more of the archetype plucky, optimistic protagonist while Fate is more of the Dark Magical Girl with a sad backstory. Well, this is somewhat excusable; season 1 deal mainly with Fate’s predicament and half of the series is spent on fillers to establish the setting. What’s more it’s only the length of 13 episodes so I can’t expect too much out of it. Nevertheless, the characters are sufficiently engaging to watch.
[Art: 7.0] The art is colorful as is befitting of its genre – bright, cheery. What I do really like about the show however, is the weapons’ designs. This got even more fascinating in subsequent seasons. Action scenes are generally well done: you got your complex magic circles, cool weapons and plenty of large scale explosions. On the other hand, it does get rather boring to see the repetitive henshin sequence, but then that is part of the signature of the genre.
[Music: 8.0] The soundtracks are great, especially during the action scenes. The opening theme is enjoyable too, though I didn’t really like the ending theme though. As an aside, the franchise is practically centered on Nana Mizuki – not that I’m complaining; I like her songs.
[Summary] I would have preferred to review both season 1 and season 2 as a whole series on its own. As said, the main content of this show is during the second half but Lyrical Nanoha in itself is already a short series, giving the impression that it ended just as things got interesting. Thus, on its own, I can only give Lyrical Nanoha a rather average rating of 6/10, simply because it is more on familiarizing the audience with its premise.
Personal Overall Rating: 6.0

I really enjoyed most of the magical girl animes but this one was one of the stupidest animes I've ever seen.
Its storyline is very lame. It talks about a girl who heard a voice calling for help then she goes searching for it which was an injured boy turning into animal form that came from another world to collect Jewel Seeds. She decided to help him later on. Honestly I expected this anime to turn out good but it was boring and disappointing.
Characters are really annoying. I don't see any development there and most of their attitudes are exaggerated. In the third episode or fourth you'll see Nanoha is getting depressed and tired as if she was told to save the world or she was the most unfortunate girl on earth. Fate also whom I thought would be better than Nanoha was frustrated. The conversation between her and Nanoha is silly. I skipped most of the scenes after episode 4 or 5. I watched it like that till the end hoping it might turn good at the near end but nothing good can come out of this show. And wow there is also other seasons for it. This is what I'm really missing. If I need headache I might watch it.
Anyway, the music wasn't good and the animation is great but too bad it was a waste for good of nothing show. The plot is too plain and much too predictable so watching it is really a waste of time. Although it has only 13 episode, its action and events are boring. I was deceived by its screen shots and their cute faces. Frankly I would prefer any other animes with ugly faces rather than watching this idiot childish one. I won't recommend this ever to anyone even if you have free time. Watch Tom and Jerry, it's way better!

I have a soft spot for magic circles and cute animal sidekicks, and with 'Mahou Shoujo' in the title this anime easily drew me in.
Nanoha had a very typical start, young girl discovers and gets magic powers and fight against some sorta force. For the first 3 episodes its sorta monster-of-week thing. Haha anyone that doesn't like this sorta formula probably woulda dropped it. But yeah it gets better after the first 3 eps. It's interesting that the magic is half technology at the same time, which I doung pretty coold.
Animation was pretty good, there were a couple scenes where I found the background a lil distorted. But yeah fights between Nanoha and Fate were good as. Plot-wise it's pretty straighforward and the ending was very satisfying ... especially when you know there's 2 more seasons out there haha.
What made this anime awesome is the characters. Nanoha isn't quite your typical mahou shoujo heroine, she was very strong from the start, and gets even stonger as the show goes on (lol you don't have to put up with a weak main lead) and her 'befriending' techinique is full of WIN ^^. And then there's Fate, so awesome! Nana Mizuki does an awesome job with her, that I pratically fell in love at her first appearance >///.> yeah panty-shots of 9 year olds sorta makes you wonder about things...
Music-wise I thought was top-notch. Innocent Starter easily became a favourite and the ending Little Wish~ Lyrical Step ... let's just say I have a soft spot for cute kiddy sounding songs ^^;; and BGM I found pretty memorable.
But yeah besides the slow start and fanservice this anime was awesome as. Watch it for FATE-CHAN! ^^

What kind of parent, when your 9 year old daughter approaches you and earnestly tells you that she needs to leave home in order to be with her friends, and go into a dangerous situation, then says sure, go ahead you've made up your mind... I'll tell you, one thats not a parent. This is definitely a magical girl show. And it has all the pitfalls that others have. The underaged kids involved in things they have no business being involved in. Yuuno for example who apparently is the same age as Nanoha (roughly 9) and who is an archaeologist. If you weren't trying desperately to suspend your disbelief, you might begin to wonder where his parents or guardians are as well. You might also wonder where all the adults are. That is, if you weren't watching a Magical Girl show in which adults are supposed to be absent.
Having said all this. Within its own limitations, Nanoha does a good job. It has good animation and backgrounds. The music while forgettable, isn't bad. The requisite magical girl transformation scenes are fortunately not done every time. The plot while of course being ludicrous. If you take into account that its a magical girl show, it turns out to be quite good. Its a fun show that is definitely for kids. With themes of friendship and redemption, overall I'd rate is as being fairly good. The story is much like Cardcaptor Sakura and others. One other good thing to note about this show. I very much liked the characters. Both Fate and Nanoha were enjoyable to watch, as were the secondary characters. Silly as the story was, Fates redemption especially added drama and watchability to the story.
If you're looking for a Magical Girl show, this is a very good one to watch. At only 13 episodes its not too long. Though after watching this, you'll have 2 sequels to watch as well. I was originally only going to give this show a 7, but when it comes right down to it, I'm a sucker for a happy ending. Overall I do recommend this show. For a fun day of anime entertainment.

Storyline/Plot: 8.5/10
The story is basically focused on how Nanoha helped Yuuno collected magical gems known as jewel seeds. The pace of the plot is quite slow at the beginning. However, it starts getting more interesting when Fate (rival) appears and competes with Nanoha for the jewel seeds. The story gradual unveiling of important events is great as it still manages a good concluding ending. The story was also easy to understand.
Character development: 9.5/10
Character development was good though not outstanding. Lack of length in this 13 episode series results in minor characters really having little airtime. However, main characters such as Nanoha's and Fate's personalities, emotions, thoughts were shown in detail. Quite a job well done.
Animation/Graphics: 10/10
All the characters look cute and lovable with great facial expressions. The enviroment was also well drawn and sometimes have some great 3D effects. The fighting scenes were also very cool.
Songs/ Music: 8/10
"innocent starter" by Nana Mizuki was quite a good opening theme. "Little Wish ~lyrical step~" by Yukari Tamura was a little too soft and slow paced. Coupled with the repeating ending animation makes the ending theme quite a lullaby.
Overall: 9/10
Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha is a decent Mahou Shoujo anime. With a short a episode length, it provides enough action, magic and fun. With such a short and sweet plot, it is worth the time to watch.

This would be most typical example of a Mahou Shoujo (Magical Girl) anime. You get a cute girl, a happy family, magical powers, high detailed backgrounds and intentional transformation sequences. Frankly, it wasn’t too impressive; these Magical Girl animes can never really get you emotional (they can’t possibly make it too sad), it never got really exciting. But this anime did do what Magical Girl animes does well... character developments.
Plot Average
I can't really give this a higher than normal score. It’s really basic; Girl found power, girl found trouble, girl found rival, rival become friends... etc. That pretty much summaries everything. Nanoha’s desire to make friends with everyone is a charm point though, and her willingness to help Fate does, well, get a little touching.
Story Style Good
Actually, basically, this anime is all about the character and relationship development between Nanoha and Fate. How they become from rivals to friends, how Nanoha helped Fate to find her happiness and how much they meant to each other. It’s doesn’t have major twists or really emotional parts, so I guess it just makes a rather nice “feel-good" anime.
Animation Good
We get detailed environment, but foreground elements like the characters isn’t very sharp. The fighting animation’s pretty cool though.
Music & Sounds Above average
Besides the rather good OP and ED, there’s nothing really special. When the transformation and spell casting scenes starts to drag, the sound effects gets irritating.
Overall Good
Quite well done really, although short of impressive. It’ll pretty much satisfy what a viewer will want... From a Mahou Shoujo anime, that is.

First Impressions: The first time I came across this, I simply dismissed it as another typical 'Mahou Shoujo' anime. Only when curiosity and boredom out of waiting for fansubbed episodes of the anime I watched on a regular basis did I check it out, and realized how wrong I was.
Characters: Takamachi Nanoha, the main character without a question is absolutely fitted to play one, being quite a strong-willed character and matured for her age (9 years old), she takes on a responsibility of Yuuno Scrya, an archaeologist cum mage from another world. Yet, despite those qualities in her, she still manages to show a more innocent and girly side to her, which balances her personality out and makes her a character with better depth than most.
On the other side stands Fate Tesstarossa, her supposedy antagonist. Despite showing out at first as a girl with no emotions save for her mission to retrieve the Lost Logia. Eventually that changes (with help from the storyline, obviously) and we are actually treated to an unveiled tragic story behind her existence.
The side characters remained that as well, though not adding too much into the mix, but not stealing the show as well.
Score: 4/5
Plot: Retrieve 21 Jewel Seeds, or Lost Logia. Sounds simply and cliche enough, if anyone had watched Cardcaptor Sakura. Eventually things turn out differently. Instead of everything either going to the real antagonist or to the 'good' side, they were split up, with Fate's and the main antagonist's tragic backstory inserted inside for additional flavour to spice everything up, transforming a seemingly typical storyline into something completely different. The only setback is that despite all the big explosions and fights, little of these seem to be apparent to the normal people on Earth, and there was little focus on the aftermath of such conflicts.
Score: 4/5
Music: Lovely OP by Nana Mizuki, seiyuu of Fate Tesstarossa and somewhat overly sweet but appropriate ED by Tamura Yukari, seiyuu of Takamachi Nanoha. The soundtracks were otherwise not very impressionable except for one or two insert songs, but nevertheless good.
Score: 3.5/5
Artwork/Animation: Noting that this is a relatively older piece of work, I would say the drawings and details were well taken note of. Animation, on the other hand, was a little blocky and rough, but otherwise all right.
Score: 3.5/5
Enjoyment: Despite the minor differences in which would have made Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha a great anime, there is little doubt that anyone who loves 'Mahou Shoujo' shows with a touch of maturity and emotional value in what they watch must catch this one. Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha is one of the best of its kind since Cardcaptor Sakura
Score: 5/5
Overall: 4/5

Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha did have a bumpy start. Firstly, no new elements are input, everything pointed towards typical "Magical Girl". Secondly, there were panty shots of 7-year-old girls! (Fortunately, it is very minimal, and practically non-existant as the series progresses). But this bumpy road makes a heavenly smooth transition. Soon, many additions were made, additions of rivals, allies, enemies, phenomenon's, et cetera. But this wasn't overwhelming, this turned out to be fun!
Not only do the characters grow, so does your love for them :3. The characters were played out well, each with good depth. The character design was so cute. The relationships between the characters, too, was cute.
Animation was the best, you'll simply love the magical battles performed. Though they're not quick-paced fights, it's still cool looking! I'm particularly fond of the magic circles.
Personally, I really liked the music, especially the OP song: Innocent Starter. Specifically, the instrumental intro of the song. It gives me warmth and I feel that is gives good emotion. The ED song, however, isn't something that should be discussed about. To put it simply, it was childishly average. For the music playing in the background, I can only remember the tunes during the near-end of the series. I actually enjoyed the songs, however, there were some times where the music would abruptly stop. Oh well, they were played in the right areas and gave good depth to some fight scenes.
There were some events that were very unrealistic to me. Considering Nanoha's age, and the limited information she can give to her peers, just how can her parents and friends be so understandable? Also, the initiation of the magic battles were unbelievable. Nanoha's overall approach to Fate's presence was also not workable for the story. And that's about the only complaint I have, which does not sum up to anything. The end was concluded nicely, and overall interesting concepts and direction created this great anime.

Who knew that this show which I would find and watch on a whim would turned out to be one of my favourite shows! Certainly not be, let me tell you.
While I can admit that I sometimes reveal my sappiness and find a magical girl show enjoyable, this one impressed me far more than the usual. As the story progressed, I found myself making predictions to myself about the plot as I usually do, but in this show, I kept guessing wrong. That's a good thing. I like shows that keep me guessing.
My only real complaint with the show is that the main characters seem rather young (3rd grade) to be dealing with such scenarios. If they were even just 3 years older, (as I pertended they were for my own sake,) it would've made more sence. But that's just a personal opinion, and easy to overlook.
Visually, there were a few scenes here and there that looked as though they may have been rushed through production, but over all, it's a great looking show. The special magic effects and the animators' attempts at realistic movement really added to the show's look and feel.
Also, in breaking with standard magical girl shows, the girls' transformation sequences weren't over done, or used as a scape-goat to waste time in the episode. This is something that really impressed me.
Audio, was pretty average, but that isn't to say it was bad in any way. It fit well with the show, both sound FX and music.
Overall, the show is a great show, and only gets better after watching its sequel, "Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha A's"!

Well, I'll tell you this; Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha is quite a mouthful. As for the anime that takes the same name, it is a series involving "magical girls." Now, I normally would not touch these animes with a ten foot pole, but with the recent viewing of Princess Tutu, my interest in the "magical girl" genre was rekindled and I have been looking for some new series ever since. Enter Nanoha and company, whom I believe are able to provide us with an overall entertaining 13-episode thrill ride of an anime.
I have to say that the story does take its sweet time to get itself going. The first half of MGLN is straight out of the mahou shoujo cookie cutter. All of our favorite "magical girl" stereotypes are back, so let's go over the list, shall we? Rambunctious elementary school girl, check. Long, drawn out and repeated transformation sequences, check. Cute, cuddly animal sidekick, brooding rival character, monster/jewel seed of the week format, and mystical staves of wonder and magic; my gosh, all check! Because of the boring and predictiable start, I so wanted to turn this thing off. However, the interesting fight scenes kept me watching long enough and before I knew it, I found myself impatiently waiting for the next episode. You see, about halfway into the series, the story decided to light a fire under its ass and take off towards the realms of unique and entertaining. Some much needed answers are finally given, several plot twists begin to surface, and the overall tension builds up wonderfully between Fate and Nanoha for one big climactic battle. I found myself breathless and quite pleasantly surprised at the end of it all.
While the characters are able to hold his or her own in the story, this was not exactly the most interesting cast to watch. Everybody's personalities seemed like they were copied from somebody else in prior animes. Nanoha, while cute and lovable, is a clone of Sakura Kinomoto. Now this is not entirely a bad thing because I would rather have Nanoha mimic Sakura instead of any of the other whiny heroines of previous magical girl incarnations. But familiarity can only take me so far until I feel that I have seen all these characters before. Fate is probably the most interesting character of the bunch with her brooding personality and the fact that they spent a nice amount of time developing her character. Everybody else, unfortunately, seem to only serve as pretty faces to look at.
Those pretty faces, however, lead me to the strongest point of MGLN. The animation in this series is wonderful. The character designs just exude everything defined by the word, cute. The battles between Nanoha and Fate are a feast for the visual senses. Animation and computer graphics are blended very well and creates beautiful magical sequences. I could have done without Nanoha's transformation sequence, though. There's something definitely wrong about showing a naked eight year old girl... Other than that, the visuals in this anime are truly something else. I wish I could say the same thing about the music. However, the OP and ED are, to put it in a simple word, boring. None of the music was very pleasing to my ears.
Despite many of it's flaws, Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha is still able to provide an entertaining anime for the mahou shoujo fanbase. Those not totally turned off by the beginning of this series will be treated to a fun anime with breakneck pacing towards the end that will leave you wanting more until its inevitable end. I recommend this series to fans of the genre as MGLN contains just about everything that makes these "magical girl" animes fun to watch. Hey, there may be a couple of questions left unanswered, but that's why they created a sequel...

Introduction
Magical Lyrical Girl Nanoha is an anime that packs a lot of action with some elements from mahou-shoujo like the transformation sequence and of course, a staff to do all the work. The story revolves around Nanoha, an elementary grade students who came across a ferret that will change her normal life forever.
One of mahou-shoujo-type anime that I am fond of, next to Uta Kata and Ultra Maniac. I was quite taken aback when my friend even had the guts to introduce me to another mahou-shoujo type anime which I am not too fond of. Well, he proved me wrong in a lot of instances, so I downloaded the anime and I was, once again, wrong in judging this anime.
Genre: Magical, Fantasy, Action, Comedy
Storyline: Very Good
This anime is very intriguing. At one point of the series, it is pretty much simple: Transforming into magical girl, killing enemies and collect Jewel Seed from them. But add another rival who also needs to collect the Jewel Seed, and from there, the plot twists and development starts to form.
This anime is an exponential-type: Started slow at the beginning, but climaxed near the end. I can pretty much say that it is quite unique compared to other mahou-shoujo anime. The story pace is also at a comfortable speed and ends satifactorily for a 13-episodes-long anime.
Graphics and Animation: Good
This anime is the first mahou-shoujo I encountered that has so many action packed scenes and animation that I have ever seen in the genre. Usually, I expect the girls to go on a "sequence" before they are launching the attack, but this anime does not use that a lot (except for the transformation sequence). The scenes are packed with close combats fighting scenes, which I did not expect from any mahou-shoujo genre. Jerks are visible at certain points in the anime, but I felt that the enjoyment from the comedy and the intense fighting scenes made it barely significant.
As for the graphics, it is pretty much normal and not so uncommon compared with other animes from the same year. The only complaint I have in this department is the little "fanservice" in the transformation sequence. My god, she is still 13 years old!!! =p
Sound: OK
Not much to comment on the sound effect department, but I was pretty much drawn in by the OP and ED sequence. OP is "Innocent Starters", a mid-paced song, but intense in terms of tunes and composition. ED is "Little Wish", another good mid-paced song with a singer that sounds like a 13-year-old girl (But, believe me, it is good ^^)
Opinion: Extremely Positive
Wow, another anime that was completely mistaken for another bad one, but in the end, turned into one of my favourites. Cute small girls with a lot of action scenes, what can be better than that? ^^
I really recommend this anime to any mahou-shoujo lovers who don't mind a lot of action scenes and light comedy scenes.
Rating: 9/10

Far from being a stereotypical magical girl with pet anime, MGLN does has something new and refreshing to offer!
It has neatly packaged into 13 episodes, bringing you action and reason in every episode. Nanoha is a very sweet girl, who happily accepts her role as the magical girl, no crying "I don't want to"!! She is helped out with her task by a sweet little ferret called Yuuno-kun and an impressive staff called Raging Heart, impressive because she actually talks and is more like a mech than a magical sceptre!! This is the first MG anime I have seen involving interdimensional space and time and I found that side of it to be really refreshing. Another refreshing aspect to MGLN is her outfit, it actually comes to her shins, so there's no continuous panty shots, or heaving bosom scenes!!
The animation is very crisp, bright and fluid, with very believable backgrounds and nicely constructed buildings and spacecraft.
The music is wonderful and both op. & ed. songs very catchy and definitely the sing along kind!!
The characters are full of life and personality and while the anime isn't long enough for indepth character profiling, this doesn't detract from the overall enjoyment of the show.
The story starts off simply enough, Nanoha has to retrieve the lost logia stones, for a reason she doesn't worry about, other than it is to help out her new friend. It then gets more involved when a second mage arrives on the scene (Fate), she is another cute girl but with a dark aura and friendship is the last thing on her mind! The story then gets darker, why is Fate really after these stones, why is she so sad and lonely? It's a very engrossing story, full of twists and much evil! with a conclusive ending that doesn't leave you wondering what it was all about!!
Overall MGLN is throughly enjoyable, filled with endearing characters, interesting plot and is extremely well animated.
A mild interest in magical girl or shoujo anime is essential to truly enjoy this show, as even though there are variations on the typical magical girl theme, magical girl anime is what it is!!

I love this series!!
This is the best Magical Girl type anime I've ever watched. The reason I pick this series is because of "Triangle Hearts OVA" (which I was highly amused by), and I'm glad that MGLN turned out to be a great one as well.
The anime is really colourful and the characters are nicely drawn and develop quite well although there's some other characters that need more development.
The story is interesting and the rivalry between Nanoha and Fate is really breathtaking, especially the one battle scene which is really eye catching. Unlike Cardcaptor Sakura (CCS) where it looks more static, the characters in MGLN are more mobile and alive.
The magical staffs they use are very interesting. Have you ever seen a magical staff that talks? Not to mention that they serve multi purpose and from time to time were used as melee weapons.
To top it off, the costumes are really cool and beautiful yet rather simple. I really hate those funny-funny designed costume like the ones in CCS. I think it is rather ridiculous to wear those funny designed costume in a battle.
Well, what more can you ask for?
The characters are lovely and cool, the costumes are nice and suitable, nice op and ed songs, cute magical pets, great battle scenes both physically and magically, and touching scenes and a little comedy.
Honestly, I'm not really a fan of Magical Girl genre but I don't know why I always end up watching them all the time. However if you're a person who likes cute girls, cool guys, cute pets, magical battles, and a rather simple yet touching story, this is the show for you!
If you are a fan of CCS, you should consider watching this series as well.
Do take note that MGLN develops slowly at first but is really worth it, and it might not suitable for younger viewers as the battle scenes could be a little violent, unlike CCS where you'll never see blood.
Enjoy!!

Animation:
Nice drawings and comfortable to watch. Reminds me a little of Card Captors.
Characters:
The characters are suprisingly well developed for what seems to be a kiddy anime. Although it's only the three or four main characters that are really developed, I kinda wanted to learn more about Nanoha's family, but I guess that wasn't important for the story.
Story:
The story was well written and pretty simple to understand. Nanoha gets some magic and has to collect these things called lost logia or jewel seeds. From there, the story goes on and battles are fought... etc. Suprisingly, there is a pretty serious story tied into the simple plot which make this anime interesting even for me, but the beginning started off really slow.
Sounds/Music:
Pretty good.
My Opinion:
I didn't think this was a really good anime, but I watched it and didn't feel like it was a complete waste of my time. This anime talks about an interesting topic once you get past the slow beginning, but nevertheless, this is a buddy/kiddy anime I suppose, and I couldn't really completely get into it. I recommend this anime to anyone who has time to kill and wants to watch a relatively short and simple anime.
