One of my favorite anime ever. Certainly, this anime is among I liked the most.
While its really not real hit, I liked it in such a way about the involvement of the stars and constellations and there you go find people with kanji characters written on their bodies (color depending on the god beast)... Once gathered, they summon the god beast and then... hehehe... the priestess becomes the living sacrifice for it....
The storyline is not a good as it seems but the way the characters are presented and developed; it was really rather nice specially with their powers, and how they grew their relationship and friendship to one another.
While I really don't care about the love story, the twists and mysteries are such an exciting scene for me especially the time when Miaka's older brother tried finding the origin of the Universe of the Four Gods.
The animation is well drawn and so does the background (9/10)
The soundtracks are a sure hit specially the opening and closing songs and also the insert songs such as Inoroyou Ni (Miaka's song) and Wakatteita Hazu and many more...
While seemingly it ended, I still look forward for another Fushigi Yuugi series... while Fushigi Yuugi Genbu Kaiden is on the run. (The prequel tells the story of Genbu Priestess Takiko Okuda, the very first girl who entered the book and was briefly mentioned in the original Fushigi Yuugi - still in manga). The original is still the best.

I believe this is my favorite anime ^_^ The love story was just sooo deep.I cried a lot with this show T_T
+Story+I have to admit the storyline was kinda wierd,a girl who gets sucked into a book...But it goes beyond that.I really liked the whole issues between the guardians ( Zusaku or whatever his name was ,was really HOT by the way). 10/10
+Characters+ I really didn't bother me the whole Miaka!!! Tamahomee! Miaka!! Tamahomeee! name calling.I think their love story is very deep & beautiful.Miaka may be clingy but she is also funny LOL.And Tamahome,he's just perfect, caring brave, and handsome.I also liked Nuriko...he was hilarious!!! 9/10
+Drawings+ :Old anime, but still loved the drawings ^_^ (Specially the Tama & Miaka half naked scenes) 9/10
+Music+ :Enjoyable. The theme song is adirable & the rest of the music background in the series is very good!! 10/10
+Overall+ :What can I say I got addicted to this series! It's very emotional ,makes you laugh your butt off,and you can learn things from it.Defenetly recommend it for Romance fans out there ^_^

This is one of my favorite anime's. It made me laugh, angry, and a couple parts I cried. It is a nice mixture of emotions. Through out the story I was always wondering what is going to happen next. Yet it was also predictable (in some parts) I would recomend this anime to those who like romance. There isn't really anything else I could say without spoiling something O.o. Just that I really did enjoy it, and I hope you will too.

Thankyou Fushigi Yuugi for restoring my hatred for clamp.
Fushigi Yuugi is the perfect show for fourteen year old teenager girls. The sweet romance, the oh-so painful breakups and the bright lights and magical attacks to boot. The traits of anime most effective to making me hate life would be
*calling eachother's names whenever somebody gets hurt
*yelling the names of magical attacks
*oldschool bad guy: "In a matter of seconds this laser will split you in half. As much as I'd love to see you die, I must leave for no apparent reason"
*those prepubescent adult voice actors
*taking too much damn time emphasizing the eyes instead of the things that need quality adjustments.
*A plot that jumps out and says, "Oh no, we aren't done yet"
I never thought I'd see so many of my pet peeves in one anime (Inuyasha, you're off the hook for now).
Fushigi Yuugi, the epitome of clamp

I loved Fushigi Yuugi. It's not a perfect anime, but it has just the right blend of romance, action and comedy to keep me interested.
To be honest, I'm not that much of a fluffy shoujo fan, and Fushigi Yugi fits right into that category. However, Fushigi Yugi is somewhat of an exception: it has strong, believable and hilarious characters; the storyline is clever and easy to understand; and of course it's a very fun, entertaining anime on the whole. Some things I would have considered as similar to Dragonball Z (but I won't spoil them) but I enjoyed watching it, and if you like romance or comedy, you should definitely try it.
I liked the background story: two girls are sucked into a book and into Ancient China. It's not a very original idea, but it's very sweet and works well with the plot.
The story is pleasing. It is not gasp-scream-swoon good, but there was some good plot development during the length of the series.
The characters are a great addition to Fushigi Yuugi, in my opinion. Miaka is like a lot of other female leads: rather weak and pathetic, relying on others (men) to protect her. Although frustrating at times, this provides a good base for the plotline. The Suzaku Seishi are a jolly bunch who love having fun and goofing around, yet when things get serious they are always willing to fight or die without hesitation. The Seiryu Seishi, though comparatively undeveloped, are clever and sly and are equally determined to follow their Miko.
The opening theme is okay ... I didn't really like it that much, but it is reasonably catchy and suits the anime's themes very well. The background music melts well into whatever scenes are showing, but I don't remember the ending theme at all.
Overall Fushigi Yugi is a pleasing anime to watch, with good looking characters and a nice storyline.

Fushigi Yuugi compared to other animes looks out of date of course it was shown at around the year 1995. The great story line compensates for the graphics. The story was unique and the character development was great. It was eay to digest though some of the episodes are too graphic and might not be suitable for younger audiences still it is a great anime.
Pros
I like the fact that it had a great storyline, the struggle for power and the love of Tamahome between the two maidens were simply awesome.
The characters were great too. It is very unpredictable. The fight scenes are cool. The drawing was simply superb.! The humor was also great - love it.
Cons
For me it was very short, they should have made it longer. I hate the fact that it was always centered between Tamahome and Miaka, of course how could I forget they are the heroes - duh as if that was a great excuse!

Fushigi Yuugi's love story is VERY, VERY strong. It will definitely jerk a few tears. This anime will either have you sighing wishing you were Miaka, crying for her, or yelling at her. The characters are all very well developed. They all have very distinct different personalities making the anime fun to watch. The animation was great for its time. However the story line more than makes up for it!

The story of fushigi yuugi was very magical. It's really mysterious. It's about a book that was centuries old, and suddenly entering into the world which you don't know. Yuu Watase did a great job doing the story, it makes an impact to the audience. This anime influenced me so much. i was really amazed by Miaka and Tamahome how they loved each other, and friendship between Yui and Miaka, even though they were enemies, they still treasure the friendship they had.
The scene's that I liked in fushigi are the comedy scene. It makes me laugh so hard, >< Miaka is really suitable for her role, clumsy but unique. One thing I don't like in Fushigi are the drawings. They're unlike other works of Yuu Watase. That's why I rated it: 9

Personally, Fushigi Yuugi is my favorite anime, simply because it was my very first anime (eh, not including sailor moon, which I consider a sort of standard...)
Fushigi Yuugi is a great anime to watch simply because of the characters. I mean, yes there's an intricate and interesting plot, but the anime is mostly liked for its great characters. Some anime's contain a couple of central characters with other side characters that you barely see. With this anime the viewer becomes acquainted with a large group of characters: all unique, with sad pasts, and charming dispositions. Fushigi Yuugi is an anime in which it's hard not to fall in love with almost everyone, including the Seriyuu Seishe!
If you have a couple hours of your life to spare, and you're in need of some comedy, romance, drama, and action, all rolled into one, watch Fushigi Yuugi! While the beginning is less than stellar, you'll fall completely in love with in the first 10 episodes. Promise! ~_^

First thing about Fushigi Yuugi, it was named Curious Play when I first saw it.
The story, is basically, about two schools girls (Miaka Yuki & Yui Honda) getting thrown literally inside a book and they end up in an ancient-China like world (well that book is actually kind of magical).
As the story progress, they become priestesses of two different gods from two different countries, with Miaka as priestess of Suzaku and Yui as the priestess of Seiryu. The two countries are bitter enemies
and that results in the seed of anomosity between those two girls to start growing (along with many other reason though too).
The story continues with the two school girls who were once best of friends, fighting with each other while trying to gather their seven star warriors to "summon" their god. This anime is filled with drama, romance and comedy to the very end of the story.
Animation:
It was one of the best animations during that time, when it was made in 1996, and yet it proves to have nice animation and even better artwork.
Storyline:
Deep storyline yet with some comedy to lighten things up. The drama involved in the anime is so intensive that it sometimes make you pity the characters involved. The twists and turns in the storyline is anticipated but totally unpredictable. The bad part is that there is too many romantic scenes and times when the story becomes too melodramatic.
Characters:
Many of the characters leave a deep impression on you, for example, ditzy yet kind Miaka, suave Tamahome and clever and pretty Yui. The character design is detailed and deep, and things just aren't what they seem with some of them!
I was a kid when I first saw this and yet this anime left such a deep impression on me.
Recommended for people that love fantasy, romance and don't mind melodramatic scenes.

Ok, let`s see................ Fushigi Yuugi has been debated over and over, so there isn`t much chance to write something original, but here`s what I thought about it.
The plot itself isn`t very original, two girls are sucked to a fantasy world (book). Eventually both become priestesses of different gods and because of that - enemies. They`re both trying to gather the seven stars - 7 people, so they can summon their gods beast and get their wishes granted.
But the story progresses nicely, there is comedy(which is quite funny), action and drama.
My least favourite charachter is Miaka, she just doesn`t strike me the right way, even if she is the main character. Why everybody likes her so much or even falls in love with her is beyond me.
Animation, even though a little outdated is still nice, character designs are nothing special but OK and pleasant to look at.
Music, well I guess it`s ok, not my cup of tea, but it fits nicely so no complaints there.
Oh and the most used words in the series are Miaka and Tamahome, so be prepared
All in all it is a nice way to kill an hour or two. I can totally understand why this series could have a fan or two :)
I`d give it a 7 1/2

Woohoo! finished it for the second time! hehe~ it's so good! Fushigi Yuugi has a very good storyline and so many interesting characters! Everyone is different and it is a funny and enjoyable anime as well!
It is about 2 girls (ordinary, school girls) who get sucked into this magical chinese book. Miaka becomes the priestess of Suzaku, and her best friend becomes her enemy. They fight to summon their beast Gods first! When they do that, they get three wishes, but first they must find the 7 worriors that belong to them... hmmm... watch it.. long story...
It is also very romantic and moving as people sacrifice themselves to protect Miaka and Yui, the story shows strong bonds of friendship and love~ very nice.
The soundtracks are also very good~ especially the opening theme song~^.^
And...the King Hotohori is very good looking... so is Nakago...

Ah, Fushigi Yuugi. One of the most debated animes I know of.
Animation: Girls will drool over the character designs of the bishonens here. They were the first thing to catch my eye. Background designs are very well drawn, and very eyecatching. Coloring is expected for the time that it was made, but the old-fashionedness of it really adds to the overall charm of Fushigi Yuugi.
Storyline: ...I can't say that it's ORIGINAL, but I think it set the stage for things such as FFTA and other well known video games/stories/animes. It's quite likable, actually, because you get to explore the characters much more than an ordinary anime would.
Comedy is ensured with the use of chibis, however, as I am not really fond of chibis, I thought it rather annoying.
The ending was rather heart-wrenching, as you really got attached to the characters. It was quite saddening to see it...
Characters: A whole cast of characters makes the scene! Although Yui, the best friend of the main character, personally kind of reminded me of Sailor Uranus, I couldn't believe that Miaka herself was so... plain. She is the ultimate Mary Sue... I cannot believe how everyone ended up liking her.... However, I ended up liking most of them (except Nakago. Ugh.), so I guess I can understand how Miaka was so likable.
I liked how neither side was really the "good" nor the "bad". Each character, though portrayed as a villain or such, was likeable in his/her own way. There were reasons for a lot of the things.
Relationships... now this played a central role in Fushigi Yuugi. Later on, most of the episodes' contents consisted of the love between Tamahome and Miaka. You have to feel sorry, however, for the other men who fell in love with Miaka and would do anything for her... o_0...
However, these relationships enabled great and indepth character development. Definitely a plus for this anime.
Sounds/Music: Here's most of the dialogue as the story reaches its middle-end and the two main characters find they really love each other:
"Miaka!"
"Tamahome!"
"Miaka!"
"Tamahome!"
....you get my point. I didn't really mind it, but if most of it is just the repetition of the two main characters' names, it sometimes gets on your nerves.
The opening song really fit the overall mysterious mood of the anime and drew you in with opening chord. Some of the songs that were song by the characters in the CDs that were released were quite likable; I listened to some of them over and over again.
Conclusion: Quite a good watch, in my opinion. This may be a hate-or-like drama anime because of some points about it, but overall, it's very likable. 7/10 ^_^.

One of the most heart warming, angst ridden, romantic animes I have ever seen! Yuu Watase is a master at writing stories to fill your heart with joy and this is no exception!
I have seen Fushigi Yuugi 5 times and read the manga twice but because of the wonderful character depiction, the fantastic storyline and beautiful artwork, I can come back to this and still enjoy every moment.
The animation style is very pleasing. Although the backgrounds do on occassion look a little washed out, the characters are full of life and their personal backgrounds will on occassion pull at your heart strings. The storyline itself is very fascinating, based on a Chinese legend of the four gods of the constellations and the stars within those constellations, we are introduced into a world where power reigns supreme and evil seems to lurk in every corner.
The songs and musical scores are all fantastic. It has a very haunting opening song and the trademark Tamahome tune gets me going every time! The incidental music fits so perfectly with the overall feel of the anime.
The romance between Miaka and Tamahome is very endearing and very typical of a good shoujo story. Too many people worry about why such a girl would attract so many guys, but really who cares! Yuu Watase's stories typically depict under privilleged/average girls getting the gorgeous hero, and I for one love this kind of scenario!
There's plenty of light relief in the guise of Chichiri, the only character to spend half his life in SD form! There is a wonderful togetherness with all of the characters, which continues throughout the whole show. It has a wonderful and overly emotional ending that will have you reaching for your hanky.
In summary, Fushigi Yuugi is a typical shoujo romance/fantasy story, filled with everything you could expect from an anime of this genre and more. Steer clear if you really can't handle an overly intense romance because the romantic eliment really is hard core!
I give this anime a 9.5/10. It only fails to get a 10 because there are a few inconsistencies with the animation style and the occassional washed out backgrounds.
