Review based on the ADV Region 2 (UK) DVD release.
Animation
I was rather impressed with the backdrops and backgrounds. They were very detailed and immersive. However I found the main character designs rather immature in aesthetics. One thing that really stood out was the originality of the creatures and the world. Only the Miyazaki movies and the 1987 movie Wings of Honneamise that have come close to creating a truly believable fictional world.
Story
I likened this to a much darker and less childish version of Pinocchio. The premise of a synthetic person (Palme) learning and understanding the meaning of being alive was in itself rather unoriginal but over time I started to become enthralled with the very personal journey of Palme and his friends. I was less impressed with the ending and I had the impression that the creator wanted an ending that perhaps was too overly dramatic. That in itself did not suit the overall mood of the movie and it felt very 'out of place'.
Characters
I didn't really enjoy the cast of characters as much as I would've liked. Overall there weren't really any stand-out individuals who really made a contribution to the mood of the movie. As a collective they all contributed and were much better as a group. Unfortunately I found them rather forgetable as a cast.
Music/Sound
I found the music very melancholic and subdued at the best of times. It most certainly wasn't uplifting musicat all. Extremely moving and at times depressing it fitted the mood of the movie. The English and Japanese language tracks were both very average in my opinion. I considered the performance of the actors to be almost below average in their delivery. The performance of the actors was (in this regard) most unusual as the release was by ADV who are commended for having one of the most experienced and talented of voice actors on their books.
Summary
I had heard mixed reviews about this title from some of my friends quite a number of years ago and was tempted to see for myself what the fuss was about. Honestly, the movie itself had promised much and with the visually impressive animation I had expected an equally moving story. It was moving but it eventually ended up feeling very flat. This coupled with a subdued performance from the cast did not leave much of a positive impression on my viewing experience.
It’s a good enough rental movie, but I am definitely not in a rush to watch it again. 3.5 stars.

This movie holds a similar story to Walt Disney's Pinnochio. But A Tree of Palme is much deeper, much darker. There was bloody violence, animal cruelty, and profanity. I firmly believe that kids should not watch this, it's not a family watch, even I had the chilly willies at some scenes of this movie. I winced when Palme was playing with the sword, and cringed when Palme was becoming his true form.
Palme also managed to stimulate many emotions from me. I immediately sympathized with him, but as he developped, I grew angry and irritated. During the movie, I listened attentively and was fairly interested in what was going to happen. In the end, the music that was left gave a sad feeling...almost empty. This movie sure knows how to scatter your emotions.
The art and animation was superb. The creatures and the setting was very imaginitive, very creative - something that would only occur as a bizarre dream. Instead, Takashi Nakamura (the director) presented his thoughts in a very well composed and organized manner. The colours used were mostly ash-like and subtle, not eye-pleasing, but these colours really reflected the overall theme of this series. With the frequent blasts of light (which I'm quite fond of), the darkish colours form a background to compliment the rays of light. It's hard to put such creativity into words, the overall composition of this movie will surprise you.
For the story, you follow Palme on his adventures, pretty simple. But the interaction between the characters and how the story unfolded came quite to a surprise. I felt that the characters developed too quickly. It felt like some characters had an alter-ego, their action didn't fit their words at times. Other than that, most characters were lovable, each had their background story and distinguished personality. The moral was brought out directly (dialogue), but what exactly did the director want to portray? I don't think I found it.
The movie itself is beautiful in a mysterious way. The ending song alone will surely bring sad feelings, especially after watching this movie. A Tree of Palme was disturbing at times but was unique. I enjoyed watching it, but I would not turn to this for a "feel-good" movie.
