Sailor Moon was both the first anime series I ever watched, and the first piece of anime I ever purchased, so I could be a bit biased.
Animation: Well, it's 1992 at its finest and not-so-finest, folks. The colors are simple, and sometimes garish, but you can see a definite improvement as the series progresses. The transformation scenes are repeated, which can be tedious. 7/10
Story: This magical girl story is made unique and amazing by the reincarnation aspect that is introduced towards the end of the plotline. It follows a standard format for most of the time (weird stuff happens, Usagi and scouts defeat monster), which can get boring. What doesn't get boring is how the basic plot allows for fantastic character interaction and development. 8/10
Characters: Usagi carries this show and takes it from good to amazing. First, she sets herself apart by not wanting to be the heroine, and being clumsy, selfish, and a crybaby to boot. As the story unfolds, so does her character, revealing many layers and a fiercely loyal and loving nature. The supporting characters would be incomplete if they hadn't been touched by Usagi, and this concept is portrayed very well. She strikes a chord as she defends and stands by her friends, and draws out a chuckle when she'd rather doodle, sleep, or read manga than fight crime and do homework. 10/10
Music: 'Moonlight Densetsu' is a classic opening theme song with an irresistibly catchy tune. If you have only heard the English dubbed theme song, you're definitely missing out. The background music is simple but good. 9/10
Overall: Let's face it, Sailor Moon is a classic. You've probably already seen it, or made up your mind to go see it, before ever reading this review. If you haven't, and can get past the rudimentary animation for a timeless story and fantastic characterization, what are you waiting for? Get off your butt and find a copy of this show! 9/10

Enjoyment - 8.0
If there are something which discouraged me from watching those 'superhero' series, they are the lack of story, the excruciating amount of fillers, flat characters, and lack of development. Knowing that Sailor Moon is also one anime of this genre, I was indeed apprehensive to watch it, as I was afraid that it will have these flaws which I listed above. How surprised I was. My prediction was dead wrong. Albeit omnipresent of fillers, Sailor Moon has other features which most anime of its kind lacked : nice comedies, decent story, good developments, and lovable characters.
The comedies of Sailor Moon are my favorite aspects of this series. I love how Usagi would say a few sentences of the 'crimes' which each monsters had committed before saying her catchphrase, "In the name of the moon, I will punish you". Though most of her dialogues are pretty dumb, but they are usually funny. Most 'monsters of the day' are hilarious and I laughed about three times per episode in average. My favorite monsters are the tennis monster and the boxing priest. One of the villains, Zoisite, is also hilarious. His sissiness amuses me greatly. I particularly like the episode when he followed Luna and that cat into the sewage. The scene that Zoisite screamed when he saw a bunch of rats chasing him had me rolling on the floor laughing.
Although definitely not the audience's favorite, Usagi is the character whom I like most in this series. Unlike other 'superhero' anime out there, Usagi is probably the last person one would expect that she is a Sailor Warrior. She is just a clumsy, average school girl, so to speak. Even the villains could not guess that Usagi is Sailor Moon. For example, in the 'ice-skating' episode, Misha and Janelyn were expecting that the Moon Princess must be a refined ice-skater. Thus, they ended up ignoring Usagi who fell over on the ring every ten seconds. I also like the teamwork, friendship, and the distinctive personalities of each Sailor Warriors. Because of these, Sailor Moon managed to hold my attention in its entirety, unlike many anime of its kind which usually made me fell asleep after three episodes due to their boring, pretentious characters and the lack of comedies.
The character development is what surprised me most. In the beginning, Usagi was a crybaby who wouldn't dare to fight against the monsters. However, she gradually became braver due to the encouragement from Mamoru and her comrades. Even one of the villains, Nephrite, grew to learn about 'love' from Naru and the last episode of his arc is the saddest part of this series. Sadly, other villains, namely Queen Beryl, Jadeite, and Kunzite, are undeveloped and they are nothing but your typical 'superhero' anime bad guys. Had they been more quirky like Zoisite, Sailor Moon would have been a much more entertaining show.
I also have one more gripe about this series. As Sailor Moon has been humorous for almost forty episodes, I was not very moved with the last two episodes, which were meant to be the most emotional part of the series. I found the change of mood to be rather sudden. Therefore, I didn't care much about those 'tragedies' in the forty-fifth episode. But maybe it's also because I saw Sailor Moon R before this, so I knew how those events will resolve. Personal taste aside, I'd admit that it's a good ending, and my neutral impression with the final two episodes did not blemish my enjoyment to this anime as a whole.
Of course, this anime is not for everyone. There will be people who will not be able to tolerate its many filler episodes. However, I personally found its fillers to be interesting due to the charming characters and loads of comedies. Thus, there should not be too many complaints about this. So the only remaining reason for people to be skeptical to try this anime would only be that they are afraid for this anime being 'girly'. Fortunately, I am wise enough to stop giving a damn about watching shoujo series as long as they are good. So don't judge the book by its cover. Give this a try. You may be very surprised. I indeed was.
Animation
At first, its animation was only 'quite good' for 1992 standard. However, it got better towards the end. Still, I retain my score at a seven because of many recycled transformation scenes.
Sound
I didn't like the second ED of Sailor Moon. It's not bad, but it's not good either. However, I like both the OP and the first ED. I also like the excellent BGM and the voice acting, particularly Usagi's and Zoisite's. Both of them made me laughed.
Story
Light-hearted
Character
Lovable
Value
I watched an uncut version of this. The boxset was released two years ago by ADV and though the retail price is approx US$90.00 at most online anime stores, you can easily find a first-hand ADV boxset at US$50.00 to 60.00 on ebay. I heard that the cut version sucked, which I don't know whether it's true or not as I have yet to see it (and probably never will). However, I found the uncut version to be very enjoyable, and it's the version which I would recommend should you wish to give this anime a go.
...Off to rewatch Sailor Moon R .. woohoo :D

Sailor Moon... who DOESN'T know who Sailor Moon is? I remember this was one of the first animes I've ever watched. A classic, just like Dragon Ball Z, another favourite.
The plot of Sailor Moon is simple: Fight against the Nemisis (I think?) lead by the evil Queen Beryl. The concept of Sailor Moon is pretty interesting: four (in the beginning) girls, formerly princess of their said stars in their past life, becomes guardians/fighters of the legendary Moon Princess. They fight against all the bad people that have it out against the planet Earth.
While the concept is interesting, the actual play of anime itself was far too long and tedious, with Sailor Moon and crew fighting monster after monster after monster after monster...
There wasn't too much character development but well, it's Sailor Moon. Who needs character development when you've got girls dressed in skimpy sailor suits fighting bad guys with magic?
The music was alright. Alright is the best word I can use to describe the music of Sailor Moon. It was just alright. Nothing special, nothing dazzling and no, nothing unique. It was... alright.
This anime became the first anime for many kids and will probably remain that way. This anime is very well received by the younger generation and in a way, that's good because this series is just filled with moral lessons.
Grade: B-

Here we have an anime that defines a genre. It is an anime that started many anime fans and as such will always have an iconic place in their heart. Sailor Moon herself is (with Astro Boy) the most recognised face of anime. Could Sailor Moon have become such a Pop Culture icon if the series she is from was a complete disappointment? I think not.
The fact that the DIC release destroyed the original message and charm of the series with its dumbed down dub AND it still has this huge fandom just goes to show that it has something to offer with its heartfelt messages, wonderful characters and the likes; which even the DIC version still did not destroy.
Sailor Moon, in its entire run, relies on the audience to feel for the characters and the story. If the audience does not (Sailor Moon SuperS) something is lost and is not as successful. Lucky for me, I was totally enthralled by the story and characters the first and subsequent times I watched it.
The best way to fully enjoy this series though is to watch it if its Japanese Uncut glory. Although the DIC version succeeds for the most part in telling the story, the mystical aspect of the Moon legends seem to be lost in translation. As such I just wanted you to know that I am reviewing it based on the Japanese version.
The series is a bit dated compared with today`s animation standards. However the artwork makes up for that. The drawing style is very successful as a Magical Girl show as all the main characters are cute, charming or appealing. I also love the sailor suits as it gives the anime a camp feel, which plays with the "fun" concept of its genre.
The thing that gets most people when it comes to Sailor Moon is the stock transformation and attack footage.
Although I do agree, they can get tedious if you see them used 5 episodes in a row. They actually serve a purpose. Because of the footage getting reused, we rarely get any flashback or still frames. So it evens out a little when that is taken into account.
This anime boasts one of my favourite intros of all time with Moonlight Densetsu. It is a subtle song that matches the mystical element of the story amazingly well with its lyrics of "Miracle Romance." The outro on offer in this series is also beautiful as it plays to the downside of love with its allusions to sadness and loneliness.
The background tunes are also quite wonderful, with the moon locket music a little masterpiece in capturing the feeling of longing and one sided love. All in all this series boasts a great soundtrack. However some of the music gets reused a little too much which prevents it from getting a perfect score.
The story is where the core of this series is and I am very thankful for that. Other magical girl shows have the story as a second to fluff (Pita-Ten, Tokyo Mew Mew) but this is not the case with Sailor Moon. Everything in this story is very well thought out as it moves along at a slow yet respectable pace. Each episode keeping you interested enough to want to see the next one.
The main story which centres on the love story of Princess Serenity and Prince Endymion is played out very well. The pain of their separation and joy of their coming together is always handled without too much melodrama. The secondary cast also gets some good screen time to develop their respective stories as well as the main one.
The characters in this series is where everything comes together. From the first episode we are introduced to the most refreshing hero/anti-hero protagonist in Sailor Moon herself. Her human (Usagi) presona in everything a hero should not be. She is stubborn, lazy, irresponsible and a crybaby. Having her as a hero was a breath of fresh air in a somehow cliched genre. The other soldiers to feature in this series are Rei Hino as Sailor Mars, Ami as Sailor Mercury, Minako as Sailor Venus and Makoto as Sailor Jupiter.
These characters are also very interesting as they do not come out as archetypes of each other; like most animes do with their cast to cater for everyone. Instead we have a cast of believable characters who are different from each other but also complement each other well when it comes to their friendship or combat. The seiyuus are also to thank for that for their very believable performance in bringing this cast to life.
The villains and other minor characters are also developed successfully and add another level to the greatness of the cast. A stand out minor character for me is Naru. She is Usagi`s best friend and also is love with a villain (although not to her knowledge) and as the story plays out, you really get to feel for the girl. There is a scene with her and Nephlyte when, their relationship comes to its culmation that makes me cry everytime I watch it. Other characters that go directly to your heartstrings are Umibozu, Zoisite and Red Butler as they are also very successfully portrayed.
This anime is overall pretty great and something I have no trouble revisiting from time to time. It is consistently enjoyable with its perfect mix of drama, action and comedy. Do not let this get past you because of its dated look, its camp premise and its mostly annoying fans (which I am probably one of now lol) as you would be missing out on something really special. After all, you should see where more recent magical girl shows originated.

Now, who here doesn't know what SAILOR MOON is???? Of course, everyone who is born after 1980 should know what it is since it's one of the CLASSICS! XD So many series and so many toys and folders and pencil has been produced from it. But anyway, back to my review.
After not watching it for around 4 years, I decided to watch it in Japanese with English subtitles, which as expected, is much better than the English dubbed version. However, the quality was quite poor for the first season I reckon.
Also, comparing to all the other anime that has been released after Sailor Moon, I wondered to myself, 'Why did I ever find Sailor Moon amazing??' LOL~ She doesn't have any other weapon but her tiara and her wand, and all the other Sailor Warriors only have one attack in this first season. Their style of fighting never changes and all the monsters were SUPER WEAK! It surprises me how this type of anime can be so enjoyable! Haha~
I find that Sailor Moon is just typically hilarious and that it's just very easy to watch, as there are no bits where it drags. The story just flows and I guess I just enjoy watching how they find out who the monsters were in the end. There really is no depth in it, but the idea of it just makes it so funny!
The romance is quite funny, but thinking that Usagi is only 14 is a bit... disturbing!
Every character has humor added to them, apart from Queen Beryl, and I just love Lunar when she gets stressed^.^
All the soundtracks of it have grown into me so much I just have to admit they are the best! I will always enjoy humming it! I will never forget it! Hehe~

Ah... good ol' Sailor Moon. This is probably the anime that got a lot of young girls into watching anime in general, DBZ being the guys' counterpart.
One thing about SM: It's madly addicting. Sure, the coloring is quite opaque and pale, but what can you expect of a 1992 anime? Surely not things as good as the animes nowadays, what with all those CG techniques. Still, its animation is good, with a very unique and established lineart style and a whole bunch of cute girls to boot.
Ok, I remember not really finding the concept of saving the world with magical powers too monotonous, but man, is it addicting. You just can't wait to see Sailor Moon and the Scouts beat up nemeses, even though some just don't seem to give up. Combine that with a flashy transformation sequence and snazzy magical effects and you've got a whole lot of awareness for this anime, even if they do the same exact thing after beating an enemy. Still, the storyline of how Usagi/Serena was a reincarnation of the princess of the moon drew me in.
There was a lot of time for character development; though I don't think the love of Mamoru/Darien and Usagi/Serena was too well-developed, I don't think it detracted any from the series. However, there were set episodes for each of the Scouts to progress in her own way and to allow viewers to see more about why they acted in which manner. They were also quite likable with a different arrangement of personalities; these group of Scouts backed each other's weaknesses with their strengths.
The Japanese opening/ending themes are quite catchy, though since I haven't watched much Sailor Moon in a while, I don't really recall them (but if I have remembered them for this long... they were probably decent, at least).
Sailor Moon is more of an introductory anime; watch it for bright effects, but don't be too disappointed if it gets too repetitive.

This is a fairly good anime for those that like female warriors with magical powers. This has a good amount of romance and friendship.
Though the main character Usagi being a "crybaby" and such I did not like much.
This kind of anime has a lot of "good" people, sure that's what it's about but for me at one point it was sickening and sometimes you can get easily annoyed with some of the characters.
Although overall I like this anime but not completely. This is a fairly good anime for those that like women as the fighters and magical powers.
This anime's graphics/drawings are quite nice, and the flashy lights and such for when they attack or when they transform is fairly nice as well.
All in all I think it deserves an 8.

Being my number 1 anime of all time, I have to say I'm a little biased when it comes to Sailor Moon! but when it comes to magical girl anime, you just can't beat it!
Animation: For 1992, the animation isn't THAT bad! Sure, you've got the very washed out looking backgrounds, but this is typical of the time for a long running anime series. The character design is far cuter than the original manga counterparts, more rounded and younger looking - not as sophisticated! but still very appealing.
As with a lot of earlier anime, there is a severe overuse of the primary colours, which makes everything look a little bland, but as this was quite normal for 1992, I don't really see anything wrong in that. The transformations are really well done, as are the attacks from various characters. There is of course major reuse of scenes, but why would anyone redraw and repaint 100's of cels by hand, just to make it look different everytime!!
Sound: The op & (2) ed theme songs are wonderful, as are all of the insert songs and BGM. This is one thing I have always felt Sailor Moon excelled at - music! The English language version also has an impressive collection of rewritten songs (which sadly was abandoned for later seasons).
The voice acting is wonderful and the studio used some of the best seiyuu around at the time. For example Rei's seiyuu was in Orange Road and Mamoru's/Tuxedo Mask is Yamcha from Dragon Ball.
The English language dub isn't too bad either, although there are 3 VAs for Serena (Usagi) and I prefered the first one who stayed for the least amount of time!
Storyline: Wonderfully original (even if this wasn't the first magical girl story, it's definitely the best!). Usagi is the reincarnation of a princess from an ancient kingdom on the moon, along with her 4 warriors she battles to save the earth from the reincarnation of the evil that destroyed everything in the past.
The original concept for Sailor Moon was first conceived when Naoko Takeuchi wrote Sailor V, so really it's just a continuation of that first story, which is why we don't meet Venus for so long in the anime (she's off doing Sailor V stuff!!).
Unlike the manga, which is pretty straightforward and to the point! The anime elaborates on the theme and introduces what is fondly known as "the monster of the week" scenario, meaning the sailor senshi have to defeat endless numbers of hideous monsters before they get to the root of the evil - Queen Beryl and her Generals.
The ending is powerful and very emotional (if you've only ever seen the dub, you should watch the original, as the final 2 episodes were cut down to 1 single episode with all the death and destruction, cruelty and true vileness cut out!).
Characters: Usagi/Sailor Moon is portrayed as a clumsy crybaby (the original concept by Ms. Takeuchi BTW), but this is what makes her so endearing. She isn't strong to begin with, but her strength of character slowly develops, until she becomes stronger of will, but throughout, friendly, loving and loyal.
Ami/Mercury is a real "boff job". Clever and wise and very alone. The story shows us how Usagi's influence changes Ami and gives her the friends she has been so desperate for.
Rei/Mars is the hot headed and beautiful shrine maiden, with psychic abilities. She doesn't need friends, but it doesn't take long for her to be caught up in Usagi's enthusiasm.
Makoto/Jupiter is the tall, boyish one, who doesn't feel feminine enough. She's brave and very loyal, with a history of unrequited loves!
Minako/Venus/Sailor V is the famous one - Sailor V - everyone is in awe of her to start with. She comes in very late in the series and her true character doesn't come into play for some time.
Mamoru/Tuxedo Mask/Prince Endymion is swarth and sophisticated. He lost his parents and his memory when he was small and so his goal is finding out who he is. As Tuxedo Mask, he's a major let-down! His appearances are very brief and although he encourages Usagi and the senshi, he doesn't actually do much to help them out! (He's so much cooler in the manga, he has an attack called "Tuxedo: the Smoking Bomber", it's very explosive!).
Queen Beryl is an evil "beyatch", her desire to rule the earth is all powerful, but when she realises who Mamoru really is, he becomes her goal as well. She has turned the 4 generals against the Senshi, as originally they were Mamoru's (Prince Endymion) generals when he was the prince of the earth.
Another quick note, Zoicite isn't gay in the manga (and for those who have only seen the dub, he is definitely a male *lol*).
There are many more wonderful characters and we musn't forget, Naru, Umino, Ms. Haruna, Shingo and of course Luna and Artemis, the 2 guardian cats who help the senshi along the way.
Overall Enjoyment: As I said, this is my all time favourite anime. I never tire of it and infact I have seen this season about 30 times! You truly need to be a fan of magical girl anime to see the true appeal of this show, as the constant transformations and Monsters of the Week could be a little tiresome for you otherwise!
