Shakugan no Shana is one of those anime that makes me step back and remark to myself, ‘Well…I didn’t hate it…’ I can see where it could have earned some of its popularity from, but it’s undeserving of the overwhelming amount of praise it receives.

Animation: The animation is consistently well-done, and you can see special attention paid to Shana in her ‘flame haze’ state. In fact the overall character design of Shana is cute and impressive. I’m used to seeing J.C. Staff use a bit softer color palette, as I’ve seen in more of their recent series, so it was refreshing to see a use of bolder colors. 8/10

Story: The story gets off to a very slow start, and if this hadn’t been recommended by a friend that I trust to give me good series to watch, I probably wouldn’t have stuck with it. In the first two episodes alone there are at least 20 different terms and/or phrases to learn in order to understand what is going on. In a series where you’re expected to pay close attention in order to figure out a mystery, this is usually no problem; however in a series like Shana, where it’s supposed to be a fun fantasy romance adventure it’s a bit too many terms that the viewer is expected to know, memorize, and understand. Luckily the story picks up and becomes fairly interesting by the end of the series, although the plot line sometimes lacks direction. 6/10

Characters: Another drawback of Shana is that most of its main characters, including both leads, are cardboard cutouts of character stereotypes from other series. Shana exemplifying the classic ‘tsundere’ role, and Yuuji whines so much in the beginning that you want to kick him in the teeth. Luckily, like the story, as the characters develop throughout the series they become more tolerable and even likeable by the final episode. 6/10

Music: The first opening theme, ‘Hishoku no Sora,’ by Mami Kawada suits the series very well with it’s energy. None of the other opening or ending themes really stuck out for me as much as that one, although none were terrible either. The background music, especially in a few crucial scenes towards the end of the series, ended up lending a lot to the overall mood. 8/10

Overall: I didn’t hate it, but I didn’t love it either. Rather, I liked it well enough to want to find out what happens next, but not well enough to have to know what happens in the second season right now. Maybe I’ll pick that up later, after I watch a few, more well-developed series. There are snippets of really good moments in Shana, but not enough to make it as popular of a series as it is. 6/10

As you can see Sekai Yuuji is your average high school student... Wait, did I say normal? Oh no, I basically gave away the fact that he’s the farthest thing from normal. Well-- He definitely is "NOT" dead… Oh no, if I keep talking I’ll spoil this whole anime, I better start with the review before it's too late.

Story: (7/10) Some people say that Shakugan no Shana is the mature version of Bleach but actually, the two stories hardly relate except for the fact that they both throw villains in, one after another, all which die the same way... Oh well at least the plot didn't sidetrack...

Music/Soundtrack/VC: (10/10) Opening, Ending, OST, VC, you name it! Every last sound-related part of SnS all the way down to SFX were as detailed. I loved how they played the piano version of the opening during serious or dramatic moments-- it was very nice and calming.

Art: (10/10) I love Shakugan no Shana‘s artwork; clear, smooth, crisp and well refined.

Characters: (8/10) When I first saw Shana I suspected the always serious personality. Who knew she becomes 100% more docile whilst eating melon-pan? Well... Moreover, I liked all the characters, they were creative enough for me. Thumbs up.

Overall: (8/10) Shakugan no Shana is a decent anime. It has a firm plot, diverse characters and setting, lots of action, but it still manages to hold the tag "school life". I think Shakugan no Shana is an anime worth watching. Don't take my word for it, go see for yourself.

The moment I saw the Hunter with the Hair in Flames, Red Hot Eyes, and a body emitting a burning aura, in black coat, wielding a Katana - I was speechless and could only gazed by the beauty of it. This is what an anime should be about - an Ass Kicking Cute Girl!

Story/ Plot (95%)

Sakai Yuuji is about to go home when suddenly the sky turns pitch black and everyone around him completely stops, then a monster in the appearance of a giant child begins eating everyone around him. When he was about to be eaten, a girl suddenly appears and kills the monster. Yuuji indeed escapes a certain death, but little is he aware of the things to come in meeting that girl.

One of the strong elements of SnS is its plot - An epic battle between the beings who eats human existence called the Guze no Tomogaras and the beings who eat existence and restore balance, the Flame Haze. The story kicks off a brilliant start, introducing our main characters - namely Shana and Yuuji - and along the way other characters are eventually introduced.

The story reveals itself eventually in the story arcs; initially, it's fast paced, but slows in the middle and speeds up again in the later episodes.

Characters (85%)

The female lead Shana is probably one of my all time favorite characters. She's tsundere, she's strong, she's strong willed, she loves to say, "Urusai! Urusai! Urusai!" with that very cute facial expression and loves melon pan - sweet! I also love how her character develops in the story...she has a soft heart too - so CUTE!

As for the other main character, Sakai Yuuji, he's an average guy, with quite a generic personality, but not too lame. He just lacks the kicks; honestly, I thought "Why the hell is he paired up with Shana?" I wished he would just set aside his IMO side and I would probably like him to be paired with Shana.

The supporting cast is quite solid, especially Alastor, Wilhelmina, and Yuuji's mother, they added more depth to the show. I'm just annoyed about Yoshida Kazumi's role in the anime - It could have been better (she's cute too!).

As for the villains, their quite nice too - especially the Master Throne Hecate. She is cool!

Animation (100%):

I personally adore the animation style of J.C. Staff, especially their character design. The scenery is also very well detailed, and the animation is very smooth. The fight scenes are also well done - they're fast paced. Compared to the other shows of its time (2005), SnS is very top notch!

Music (95%):

This is where the anime excels - The OP themes and ED themes were great, especially the first OP, "Hishoku no Sora" by Kawada Mami. The music by KOTOKO is also good.

The BGMs are quite forgettable but they spiced up the scenes very well.

Overall (95%)

SnS deserves all the hypes and fan adoration it gets when it is still airing. Who can't help but love our Female main character Shana. There were a few minor annoyances, but overall it's a very good show. Highly recommended!

After hearing all those hypes about SnS, I decided to give this series a try. Personally, I felt that it didn’t live up to its hype. It was just decent. It wasn’t as awesome as what most of the reviews made it sound like.

Animation/Graphics/Design: 80%
Music: 85%

I’ll start with the good point of the series: the graphics quality is great. I like the designs for the characters, especially the ones used in the animation for the ED. The animation for the fight scenes, however, could have been better.
Great bgms; they were really well orchestrated. The OP and ED were rather average though.

Concept: 87%
Story/Dev: 30%
Characters/Dev: 30%

Now to the parts I’m displeased with: (yes, there are lots of things in this series I’m unsatisfied with)
The storyline was actually very good. The concept of the struggle to seek for one’s identity and to affirm proof of one’s existence has always been a hot topic for fantasy stories. I was thus expecting the series to be quite dramatic, with some very intriguing philosophical themes. However, the series fails in the plot progress. They just kept throwing in villain after villain, forsaking the main plot about the Torch and that initial idea of “fading existence." Indeed, SnS could have become a very emotional series if they concentrated on that. Well, they didn’t, and that’s why I’m giving this series a low rating, for throughout the series, they didn’t really focus on the main plot.

While I can’t pick a favorite character in Bamboo Blade because I like all of them, SnS is the reverse: I can’t pick a favorite because I like none of the characters. The main cast doesn’t make very significant impressions, and they do not really have any outstanding personalities. As for Shana and Yuuji, well, they are just the generic archetypes: the typical very normal good guy and the stereotypical tsundere. And their character development is rather shallow. Admittedly, there is quite a bit of development for Shana’s personality. I’ll also admit that there are funny moments about her, like seeing the blithe expression on Shana’s face when eating her melon pan, hearing her trademark “Urusai! Urusai! Urusai!" Overall, however, I still don’t quite like her. Not that I dislike tsundere, it is just the personality of Shana that I dislike.

What annoyed me the most is how they try to mix in school life romance into the plot. And it is NOT because I dislike romance genre; it is HOW they mix in the element of romance in this series that I dislike.
On one end, Yuji is about to perform that “save the citizens" stuff, yet he gets held back by Yoshida (a girl who has a crush on Yuji) and their little bit of school girl jealousy. It’s annoying. I know it’s not her fault since she is not aware of all the apocalyptic things going on, but it was very annoying for me. Things got even more annoying when later on, she found out about the crisis, and still harbors on about losing Yuji.
Also, the supposedly sentimental scenes weren’t very realistic, or rather, were not well developed, so I simply was unable to really sympathize with the characters, or even go something like, “aww so sweet and so romantic."

Summary:

This series is, in my opinion, overrated. Too overrated. It had an awesome storyline to work on, but they did not develop it well. It needs more element of drama to spice up the series. Even the romance scenes in the series are lacking in content. To be honest, the graphics and music were what prevented me from giving this series a “fail rating." I certainly didn’t get hooked watching this and I sincerely hope that this series got its fame not simply because of Melon bread.

Personal Overall Rating: 63%

It's awful.

I was not impressed at all with Shakugan no Shana. I do not think I can stress this enough, but I find that it is very important to be attracted to a character in order to enjoy a series. Sadly there was absolutely NO character I came to like. None. The relics were supposed to be cool, they were not. The main character was generic (surprise, surprise), and Shana was a tsundere. I'm not a fan of tsundere's....

So much hype, rave reviews, and love for Shana went on. I was certainly looking forward to enjoying a "good" series. Well, that failed. An epic failure at that. Along with the characters, I couldn't care less about the plot line. Character figures would show up saying hello and I'd wonder what the hell they're doing there. The action, I thought, would be awesome... that was not the case. It was very brief, one slash, two slashes with a touch of TOO MUCH FREAKING TALKING!

There were some good points that deserve mentioning even when Shakugan no Shana itself was a horrid title. One, the music was very lovely. I'm very keen about Mami Kawada or Kotoko. The background music, too, was a nice input (although there were some strange violin melodies at some areas). Second, the animation/character design was good. I think they input much emotion into the OP and ED videos, and I enjoyed those.

Unfortunately for Shakugan no Shana, music and art aspects do not relieve the major annoyance and boring factor that is this anime. The character relationships were dumb. Especially the new blonde characters in the later half of the series... jebus. In all truth, I fell asleep watching this anime. I literally would turn to this anime in order to fall asleep. It really helped with my insomnia.

In short, it sucked.

Imagine an anime like Bleach that is driven with a more emotional and satisfying story, while still having good characters and action, and you have Shakugan no Shana.

Story (9.5/10): The story got off to a quick and dark start. It reminded me of Bleach with a chick with a sword (known here as a flame haze) fighting human devouring monsters (Guze no Tomo, translated Denizens of the Crimson Realm), unbeknowst to humanity, with a boy who suddenly finds himself connected to the conflict. But unlike Bleach this has much more of an emotional impact. Despite the sad start Shana actually manages some happy moments with the typical anime classroom setting. But this setting also helps show the relationship angle of the show as different love interests arise between the characters. The other side of the storyline involve different "Denizens" appearing for different reasons, and the Flame Hazes fighting them. The story moves very well, and while I felt it was not as dark as it was at the start, it remained emotional on both the action and romance. It was probably this emotion and the balance between these two ends that made this story so great.

Characters (9/10): I liked most of the characters in this anime. While Sakai Yuuji did not stick out as a great main character, I still found him to be interesting, especially in how he handled the fact that he was already dead (in a way). Shana is the most interesting character because her emotional growth drives the whole story. She starts off cold and with little care beyond her duty of fighting. But she starts discovering new emotions, particularly affection, and this anime does a good job of portraying her confusion and frustration with handling these feelings. Yuuji's other love interest, Yoshida Kazumi, is not just a character there for romantic conflict. She is also presented as a kind and sympathetic character that will not just stand aside and lose out to Shana. The other classmates and Flame Hazes (and their partners) are also worthy of the focus they get in the series. Particularly, the drunk and hot-blooded Margery Daw, a Flame Haze who also becomes kinder through those around her, and Satou, Yuuji's confrontational classmate who goes from disliking Yuuji at the beginning to somewhat admiring (or envying) and being a friendly rival to Yuuji. Also, the "Denizens" all make for great villains, as each has a interesting personality (like the so-called "Twincests" Sorath and Tyrael).

Art (8/10): The animation is good, but nothing is done in the series to make it really stand out. The character designs, the Fuzetsus, and the colors all fit the anime well so there are no real complaints. The fighting is also well animated from beginning to end.

Music (10/10): The two OPs and EDs are great and each is memorable on its own. Shakugan no Shana is well known for these OPs and EDs and for a good reason. None of the in-story music is really memorable, but it's not bad or out of place. The sound is good and consistent.

Entertainment (10/10): I was surprised on how quickly I became hooked to this series. The emotional parts of the story really grabbed me and I enjoyed the fighting. The Crimson Lords and Denizens all have cool names/titles (Wilhelmina Carmel the Manipulator of Objects, Bel Peol the Arbitrator of Reverse Reasoning, etc...). This anime never had any boring moments and felt consistently satisfying for all 24 episodes.

This would be an anime I would recommend to all.

I always think Shakugan no Shana is what Bleach should've been like. Like Bleach it starts off with a very good premise. We humans are now just a shadow of our past selves and Shakugan no shana really dwelled on that and it was both creepy and heart-wrenching. To realize that you'll be completely forgotten and nobody misses you...

The average mark signals that the anime never had any intention on such a good plot line. Shakugan no shana just sinks into another Sailor Moon-like story after the second episode. Magical Girls and Japanese-School drama are an irresistible mix it seems.

The characters were not bad. Shana wasn't a typical beauty but she had a look to her that made you think she's your kid sister. Sakai Yuji is pretty mundane as well but since this is a guy anime he has girls chasing after him for reasons that seems to baffle me (maybe I'm just envious). There's nothing special about them but they don't grate on your nerves at the very least. I just think that beyond Shana none of the other characters had much of a personality.

Music is good.

So all in all an alright anime. Typical story with a cast of characters that just are good enough to work well inside this story. Watch this if you like Bleach or are considering Bleach. I personally enjoyed this anime which is why a 7/10 fits this series.

Plot:Shakugan No Shana is an interesting anime. If you think it's only about saving the world you're wrong. Most of the anime is about Shana learning how to be a normal high school student and dealing with her feelings for Yuji. Please note that I'm reviewing this anime after the first season. Although there is some fighting.

Characters: The characters were all good and there was plenty of character development and lots of love triangles.

Animation: The animation was fine but nothing out of the ordinary. Same goes for the music.

Everything was pretty good. It didn't wow me and if you're looking for an anime with a good mix of fighting and character development then this is your anime.

I am going to be blunt and clear about this series in the beginning:

If you are looking for logically thinking characters, turn around. If you are looking for deep character interaction that do not revisit the same love-triangle first introduced by Orange Road, turn around. If you want logical fighting (none of that, "if she could use **** power, why doesn't she just **** her enemies?")

With that set aside, I have to say I enjoyed this series greatly. Not for the character development, hell, there was barely anything happening between any of the characters because they react to each other nearly the same way as they did when they were first introduced. I also can say that I did not like this series for the personalities of the characters. To me none of them left me with a hear warming feeling, or even close to a nice impression. Hell, some of them had right down freaking scary personalities.

Story? What story?

The music definitely left an impression, however. Both the BGM and the main themes were right down awesome. Check them out or go to Nipponsei, but they are on my "on-the-go" list.

The truly endearing part of this series is not the semi-intense music or the crappy personalities, but the awesome animation. Sarcasm aside, the series was much more intense then most other action-type animations simply for the flames and the great CGI/cell work or whatever.

In Shakugan no Shana, what really reached out and caught me was character designs. The monsters, the facial.. in here were definitely on the level of Miyazaki.

All in all, a great series to admire, but not much for if you are trying to submerge yourself into a story.

I found this anime to be quite disturbing at first. The whole idea of torches being used to replace human souls was very unique, but it didn't really appeal to me. The action scenes were good but they could have been better. I found myself liking the action sequence in the OP more than the actual show. One thing I did not like about the anime was the immaturity of the characters. I know that they are just students still learning and growing into adults, but i felt that there was so much unnecessary drama that could have only spawned from childish relationships. What I actually liked about this anime is how they do different arrangements for the OP song and incorporate it into the background music of the show. All in all, this anime was a little bit above "okay" for me, but i find myself saying this about lots of animes, "It could have been better."

This is an impressive anime for 2006. See, in my opinion, as the years go on the quality and the contents of anime should grow too. And to tell you the truth, this is actually an improvement amongst most of the animes made in 2006. No offense to other 2006 animes, but this is just better in style and animation. I was first curious because some of my classmates told me about it and how they felt it was the best anime ever. Just for that comment, I decided to try out this anime, and it turned out exactly as my friend said. One of the best anime ever.

Characters: 9 - This anime has many strong points and I somehow feel that this isn't one of the strongest but it's still very good. There are many interesting characters and each with different and understandable personalities. The character development was really great and I can literally see characters grow. The major and minor character involvement in this story is also great, and I got to see lots of connections and drama between characters. I didn't give this category a perfect 10 is because there are some elements missing; little things that I felt didn't really connect.

Music: 10 - Hands-Down ladies and gentlemen because the music in this anime is off the hook. First the opening song grabs your attention very quick and as you watch the anime, the background music comes in and hooks you onto it. Finally when everything else ends, the ending comes and the combo is just way too perfect. It's a 10 for me and I even added the OP and ending to my favorite lists and MP3.

Animation: 10 - The scenerios and characters were drawn beautifully. The small details, the slow details, and even the battle scene (really fast details) were drawn connectively to each other. The style stayed consistent through-out the whole series and I can't wait till the movie and the second season that everyone is ranting about!

Story: 8 - Even though it wasn't that believable because I've watched too much fantasies and other magic related show, it's still great. Episode 1 for me was like the beginning and climax for me, the rest didn't keep up with the energy episode 1 brought. It faded and spiked, faded and spiked, however everything worked out pretty nicely in the end <----- not the anime I meant how the story worked out.

Overall: 9 - I give a solid 9 to this awesome and fast-paced anime. It didn't deserve a 10 because I felt that it lacked some parts mainly in the plot and the story, which can cause confusion and irritation. But overall, I consider it one of my favorite anime and I love the guys/gals who made this series.

I CAN'T WAIT FOR 2nd SEASON AND THE MOVIE!!!!!!!!

I found out about this anime when I looked up action on Anime-Source. The name caught my eye and I am highly pleased that it did. After the first three episodes of it, I was completely hooked and found myself begging for more. There was so much about this anime that was deliciously addicting.

First of which was the action. I couldn't get enough of it. There was swordplay, magic, and some good, old-fashioned hand-to-hand combat. Everything that is needed in good action anime was in here. But another thing about this anime that made the action great was that while the characters fought physical battles, they often fought internal and emotional battles. Not many anime producers can intertwine the two as well as this one did.

Another thing I highly enjoyed about this anime was the time between battles. During this time, an entirely different struggle would take place. The struggle of social life, and love. The main character, Yuji, has to deal with the fact that he's dead, but at the same time appear to be calm and normal to his friends. Another character, Shana, has to blend in with society in order to protect Yuji, but at the same time has to deal with new feelings that are rising inside of her while still appearing to be tough and intimidating. Each character has to deal with inner and outer conflicts while trying to appear to be the same person they no longer are.

However, like all anime, this one had a flaw. As the anime began to wind down, it gave off the feeling that the ending was going to be spectacular and everyone would be happy. Everyone was happy, but that due to some totally random fact that the viewers would have no way of even guessing. It just took away from the effect of the ending and left me with a slight crestfallen feeling.

Despite the less-than-filling- ending, this anime was great. I'd recommend this anime to everyone, especially those who are Bleach and Yu Yu Hakusho fans. This anime has great comedy, great characters, amazing action, and a good plot. Truly one of the better animes out there.

With the upcoming second season of this show I decided to revisit this. I must say the show was a bit cliché, plain and great at the same time.

The story features Shana, a Flame Haze, responsible for protecting people from Tomogara. Both Flame Hazes and Tomogara are invisible to the human eye. Tomogara attempt to steal peoples souls to feed on them, and become more powerful. Torches are people that have had their souls eaten, and are now placeholders that will slowly fade out of existence, and people's memories. These torches are made by Flame Haze's when a person's soul is eaten, to keep a balance in the world, since doesn't of people can't be disappearing at a time. Sakai is a torch that has become involved in the war between the Flame Haze's and the Tomogara.

Shana, the main character, was just another bad-ass-girl-who-is-too-tough-to-talk-about-her-feelings-even-though-she-is-actually-in-love-with-her-side-kick. She was the slowest of all the characters to develop. Her potential abilities were by far the highest, yet she may have been the weakest throughout the show, aside from Sakai.

Sakai was not the slowest developing character, because his character didn't change a bit from the begining until the end. He was like a stagnant pond, simply a mess of emotions that may have swirled around a bit, but nothing much happened aside from that. He never seemed to bottle them up then explode, advancing himself in that way, nor did he sit down to talk them out, and develop in that perspective. He was presented as nothing more than a placeholder character while the real story between SHANA and her adversaries went on. Then suddenly at the end he made a massive jump forwards to catch up with Shana.

Overall, the story kept me hooked. It was very original. The thing that did it was the villains. It featured everything from incestuous children to just pure evil men. I can't wait for season two. The only thing that could have bumped this up from a 9 to a 10 would have been a better development of Sakai.

Well, if you liked Fate/Stay Night or even Bleach (at least the beginning of Bleach) then you will enjoy this.... Typical "Chick with a sword is a bad ass" and "Guy is clueless hopeless and of no use."

Details:

Animation: 8/10. Flash cut fights. Typical drawings of most characters. No special scenary... colors were good overall.

Music: 9/10. Good opening and good ending. Intra music episode was alright. Nothing special over all.

Story: 7/10. Aren't we tired of the story of the bad ass chick who comes to the rescue and the clueless male who knows nothing about anything (Screams Fate/Stay Night all over). Couple of episodes were even fillers in a sense. Overall I found it to be entertaining but not worthy of being called special.

Character Design: 7/10. Gosh, talk about typical characters. The male is the usual clueless male.. heck you can take the main male from Elfen Lied and slap him here in this story and they would be the same... apply even the one from Fate/Stay Night. Can we get some originality? Even in drawing. The female is the usual bad ass chick who can kill anything in sight.... of course with a sword. No character growth or maturity.. relationship didnt get anywhere that it wasnt already and neither did their personalities.

Overall... a typical for kids anime with a bad ass girl and a clueless guy... add some fantasy and interesting story to it... a must watch if you are into this stuff. (VERY similar to Fate/Stay Night style and Bleach initially).

Synopsis:
The story spins off with Sakai Yuji being saved by Shana from monsters from Guze (Crimson realm). These monsters eat humans' existence to gain power and it was up to flame hazes like Shana to stop them from disturbing the balance of existence in this world. More was explained as it soon became Shana's duty to protect Yuji as he contains one of the most valuable treasure in him.

Character Development: 9/10
Character development was focused on important details which is a plus point as the anime only has 24 episodes. The background of Shana was especially well explained.

Animation and graphics: 10/10
The anime was well drawn. The fighting scenes were well made and effort have been made to ensure that the style of the battle was new in every fight. The characters are also drawn beautifully.

Music and Sound: 9/10
The opening and ending songs are nice and the background music are all very decent.

Overall: 10/10
Shakugan no Shana is one of my favourite anime. It is very enjoyable to watch as it contains the right amount of action, comedy and romance.
