Put shortly, if you didn't play Final Fantasy VII or know anything about the story, this movie will probably make very little sense.
The Amazing:
The graphics were beyond everything that I have ever seen. Though the detail is not as high as most CG that you encounter today, the movements are just like real life. Every single action is so comfortable looking that it could almost fool you. In every fight scene, everything is elaborate, flashy, and nearly realistic (if you ignore the half ton swords and eighty foot jumps)
The Good:
The music was exceptional for this movie. It was absolutely unique. I have never heard anything like the music in here in any other movie in similar scenes. It almost seemed disconcerting, but it truly fit the scenes well.
The bad guys were pretty good in this one, though I know some people really hate them. Kadaj and his gang are at least a little bit disturbing. They seem to act like children, but they are incredibly intelligent. They come across as really creepy, but I liked them as villains.
The Bad:
The only flaw that I really see is that the whole plot of the movie seems to be an excuse for fight scene after fight scene. I still feel that they really brought out Cloud's inner struggle and his character very well. I wouldn't say that the plot was bad myself, but don't expect a very deep story line. I really feel the purpose of this movie was mostly to show off the abilities of the animators rather than the plot, though the plot was not bad. I watched the movie for action much more than plot, and I wasn't disappointed with either.
------------------------------
Overall, an amazing movie. I loved this one. It is probably my favorite movie and is hands down the best of computer animation that I have ever seen even though it came out several years ago. This one gets a full 10/10

I never understood the allure of Final Fantasy VII; it had an absolutely nonsensical story, horribly uniform character customization (even more so considering its immediate predecessor, Final Fantasy VI had 14 uniquely skilled characters), a flabbergasting and milquetoast main character that after 10 years of retconning, finally starts to make sense and feel real, and most importantly, the most overrated villain in the history of videogames: Sephiroth. The argument that had VII and VIII/XI switched places, whichever was released first would have had the same level of fan-adoration is not only plausible, but an absolute. Final Fantasy VII is legendary not because of the aforementioned flaws, but because it completely revolutionized the RPG genre by bringing the console audience into a 3D world, and consequently, all the ADD afflicted kids raised on pretty graphics rallied together to proclaim it to be the greatest RPG ever made. It's not unlike the "First-Anime-Syndrome;" no anime fan ever rates their first animes low, because had they experienced a poor anime, they probably wouldn't have become fans. For the kids whose first RPG was Final Fantasy VII, drawn in by the FMV cutscenes shown on TV and promise of big boobies via Tifa Lockheart, this was something they had never experienced; yet for those of us that played the Final Fantasy series from game one, really, the allure was not there, and it was overall a mediocre and forgettable RPG.
But that, as they say, is now ancient history. Time has progressed in a linear manner, and any naysaying regarding Final Fantasy VII should now be discounted and thrown into the bin of pointlessness. There's no doubt it's one of the most influential RPGs ever, even if I consider it to be for the wrong reasons (and the fact that the Final Fantasy series has become worse and worse with each iteration since doesn't improve my view of Square since the shift to 3D). Yet, I've personally played every single spinoff of the series (excluding the Japanese only cell-phone games) despite the general consensus that the spinoffs have been poorly constructed, used primarily to earn a quick buck. The mordacious reviews of the games only relented for the most recent addition to the so called Compilation, Crisis Core. In some ways, I held off writing this review because I knew I would play Crisis Core, the "prequel/retcon-fest" that explains Cloud's relation to Zack, owner of the buster sword shown in the intro of this movie, and I think I benefited from that by being able to see the full story of what has transpired in this massive universe. And well, after all the retcons and sequels and spiritual successors, the story ends up being not too terrible and even strangely affecting (the good feelings are pretty much all from Crisis Core); of course, it's still nonsensical and little more than a serious version of Discworld (although the insanity present is not that far off). Advent Children, the sequel to the original Final Fantasy VII, definitely isn't great drama (much like its predecessor); it probably shouldn't even be referred to drama at all. It is, however, by far the most incredible display of CGI animation I have ever seen, and shows how far we've come in terms of photorealism.
The plot is a direct continuation to the original Final Fantasy VII. Of course, the "secret" ending of Nanaki and his two children running up to a ruined Midgar is still far off into the future, so it can be argued that it's not technically a sequel, but a bridge that fills in the gap between Sephiroth's failed Meteor and the final ending. And let's face it; it was terrible. This is two hours of pure fan-service, bringing in fan favorites and familiar characters in a backdrop of amazing CGI. Playing the game and reading the literature of the world of Gaia was a necessity for anyone who is watching this for story, but what's the point of that? Would I recommend a grown man to read Clifford the Big Red Dog books? The bottom line is simple: watching Advent Children for plot is an exercise in futility.
The characters are no better. Each person gets zero time for character development, a smart move considering any/everyone who would be interested in this movie would have played the 40-100 hour game that... sort of developed the characters. But hey, everyone's here. The Turks, the Final Fantasy VII playable cast, Rufus Shinra, and of course, our silver haired baddie, Sephiroth (and his three clones, quadruple the fun for Sephiroth fanboys)! This is every fanboy's dream, and caters solely to the fans of the series. Any serious film aficionado would spit in disgust at how poorly and cliche each character is displayed, but they would probably be missing the point.
So with two of the most important aspects of any non-interactive medium completely trounced and thrown into the garbage, there's only one thing that can keep it from the Spirits Within category; pure non-adulterated kickass. And holy crap on my pants, SquareEnix delivered in ways I didn't think possible. The animation is at least 5 steps up from Spirits Within, a film that almost breaks out of the Uncanny Valley in terms of photorealism, but underperformed in every other category, including action. Advent Children doesn't try to hide its intentions with artsy metaphysical talk and lovey-dovey scenes; it skips everything of that effect and dives straight into the realm of blowing your pants off. This is fantasy, something Square's previous movie stripped itself of for the worse. In the three years since I first watched Advent Children, nothing has been close to approaching the mind-blowing cinematic effects of this film; Zemeckis' Beowulf was close with its facial rendering, but pales in comparison with respect to action, not to mention that some parts seems completely odd because of inconsistent movement from the models. Although like Beowulf, some parts still sink deeply into the Uncanny Valley (such as the near identical facial structure of everyone), the majority of the animation and facial expression bulldozes its way out of the valley reserved for zombies and corpses; a true technical marvel and something I would have expected one of the bigger Hollywood companies to have broken through first. The animation is simply eye-popping, yet it's never tiresome like the recent Appleseed sequel; each battle feels incredibly fresh and visceral, from the bike rides to the falling tower, watching it in motion is something every animation fan cannot miss. Absolutely incredible; I didn't think animation of this level was possible until Advent Children, considering most CGI films go for the cartoony look to avoid the dreaded valley. Sound and music was generally consistent; the music is mostly straight from the game, just laced with heavy death metal rather than the melodic beeps of midi.
It's easy to see why they cut out the story and character developments, the flaws of this production; Square wasn't willing to make the same mistake they made with Spirits Within. Aiming their film towards a larger audience at the expense of eye-candy by implementing a plot alienated the true fans and ended up a colossal failure that nearly destroyed the company. With Advent Children, they aimed it specifically at fans, resulting in a rousing success on all fronts, garnering nothing but praise for the overall production. Yeah, the story is bad and the characters are no more than moving objects, but the point of this film wasn't that. I interpret it as a thank you note to the fans that made the company into what it is today, that they realized the wrongs they made with Spirits Within and realized that they are a videogame company first and foremost. In that train of thought, Advent Children isn't just a great videogame movie, it's probably the best (especially when compared to such rubbish as the Uwe Boll films). It is an animation tour-de-force; something I don't believe will be surpassed for many years to come.

A movie based on a smash hit video game? Should I have lowered my expectations (as you would from video game adaptations), or did it turn out better than I had thought? Review based on Sony Entertainment DVD release.
Animation
Excellent! The CGI was some of the very best I’ve seen in any entertainment genre (let alone anime). There were so many moments of jaw-dropping gorgeousness that I was lapping up every shred of eye candy. Even the mundane things which are notoriously difficult to animate (hair moving in the wind or realistic eye-blinking) were brilliantly done. I often found the animation of Pixar’s movies to be of very high quality, but Advent Children surpasses it. This was certainly the aspect of the show I enjoyed the most (over and over again!).
Story
Having never played FF7, I couldn’t help but feel that I was missing out on so much of the story. Thankfully there was a DVD extra which had condensed almost the entire story of FF7 in a 10-15 minute ‘recap’. Even with this insightful prologue, the story and plot felt random and at times, directionless. The breath-taking animation temporarily distracted me from these story gaps but with hindsight, I must say that the story overall felt rushed or even incomplete.
Characters
Again, this was another area of the movie that was incomplete. Rather than concentrate on development of the characters, there was this almost hurried stance to proceed towards the next fight scene. This resulted in a superficial expose of the characters. By the end of the movie, I didn’t see the likes of Cloud or Tifa as movie characters but more like caricatures whose sole purpose was to fight.
Music
I’ve heard from friends who have played the games that FF soundtracks tend to be extremely moving and emotive scores. As I have never completed a FF game, I am unable to comment on how this score compares with the game. As a stand alone soundtrack, I found it dramatic and emotionally involving without it being excessive. The Japanese language version was excellent. Even though I tolerated the English cast, they didn’t quite have the distinctiveness of their counterparts. As one previous reviewer commented, it almost as if they were all too similar.
Summary
It turned out better than I had thought. The major letdowns were the story, plot and near absence of character development. The massive pluses are the soundtrack and the animation. It will be a very long time before I see anything as visually stunning as Advent Children. I personally wouldn’t buy it, but it would be an excellent rental. As a non-FF fan, I found it enjoyable but shallow. If you are a FF fan however, I’m sure you’ll find this as special as the games. Overall, 4 stars.

I was a big fan of Final Fantasy 7 back when it first came out. Maybe 10 years or so ago. (Wow, has it been that long.) I remember playing it on my Playstation as well as computer when it was released in that format. And have replayed several times since then. Somehow, despite the crappy story, the game has stood the test of time for me. So when I heard about a movie based sequel to the game, I couldn't wait to watch it. Adding to my excitement, the trailers made it look outstanding. However when I actually watched it, I came away feeling disappointed. It was good, worth watching, but not nearly as great as the game.
The reason for this of course is the medium. A game when it comes right down to it, is a game first, with a story second. A movie however, is not interactive in that manner. A movie, you sit back and experience it. And thus, what matters most changes. From entertainment, to story. And with the weakness of the game being its story, that weakness became highlighted in the movie. Adding in the particularly weak subplot of the children, and the Geostigma silliness, and it made for some gaping plotholes that took away from the show.
It wasn't all bad though. I give it a good rating because I really did enjoy the show. It had amazing artwork, excellent use of CG, and the fight scenes. Just Wow! Particularly Tifas. Her fight was the best in the show; I must have watched it alone a dozen times or more. The fight between Cloud and Sephiroth while good, was so unrealistic as to be a bit disappointing. Though it was still fun to watch.
Overall, I do recommend this show. Particularly if like me, you're a fan of the original game. While not as good as the game, its a decent and enjoyable movie, with plenty of potential for rewatchability.

Story/Concept/Dev: 60%
The plot is cliché and generic; bad guys summons some sort of creature to wreck havoc, Hero turns up to pwn them. Hero then proceeds to defeat the big boss. Finish. BUT! Who needs plot when it’s 1hr+ jammed packed with awesome actions (and eye-candy Tifa) all done in CG? (I won’t discuss the parts about Shin-ra, Geostigma etc as it’s more of the plot for the Game. Besides, the movie didn't really explore that aspect much anyway)
Animation/Graphics/Design : 100%+++
As expected of SquareEnix, with their legendary quality in CG animation.
As initially mentioned, the movie is so packed with fights that there are barely any dull moments.
The animation is fluid and dynamic and the viewers can really see the amount of effort the production crew placed into the movie. From the way the characters move, to the details of their costumes and weapons, the expression during close-up on the faces of the characters. Both the foreground and background were done realistically and very livid in details. Also, the camera angles deployed were very bold and innovative, amplifying atmosphere of the scenes. My favorite scenes are when they were on the bikes and when Sephiroth made his grand entrance.
Characters/Dev: 60%
Once again, generic cast as with a generic plot, though we do see quite a bit of subtle romance between Cloud and Tifa.
Music: 90%
Epic fight sequences matched and choreographed only with equally epic soundtracks. Not to forget the sentimental/emotional ones for the touchy scenes, that also complimented and builds the ambiance. My personal favorite will be the soundtrack played upon the entrance of Sephiroth – apocalyptic melodramatic mood – synchronized with the camera angle of how Sephiroth rises.
Summary:
I highly recommend this movie to anyone who’s into shows with spectacular action sequences. (It doesn’t really matter whether you have played the Game or not.) The fact that it’s done in CG itself already gave it an unfair advantage. Throw in the superb character designs, livid details, great character designs and excellent soundtracks: sit back and enjoy the visual stunners.
Personal overall rating: 90%
I wont be giving a full 10/10 as to a small extent, plot does matter to me.

As a final fantasy fan, or rather being a massive final fantasy 7 fan in particular (best game ever). I was only slightly disappointed because there wasn't as much use of all the characters as I'd have liked. Other then that amazing.
The story actually makes sense a disease thats spread throughout the world as punishment for what happened in the game in case you didn't know it's because shinra corp used the planets life stream to produce what we call electricity and thus making life more convenient for everyone. I know it may sound lame but if you played the game it's nothing surprising. The characters are awesome. Though there's no one new apart from the three dude's in leather and that kid. This was the only weak point in the movie there's no character development but seriously it isn't needed. Again only if you've played the game.
The music is pretty much the same soundtrack used in the game but improved in quality and in many other ways its used at right moments the only memorable one is the Aerith theme (yeah her names Aerith something went wrong with the translation in the game)
The animation is incredible it all looks crisp, and the CG and special effects are exactly what I would expect from Square Enix. Everything looks beautiful for a world thats pretty much a wasteland.
Action is incredible there's no blood but there never is when it comes to the work of Square Enix. The fights are epic. I can't say anything without spoiling anything unfortunately.
I've mentioned it many times before but your most probably only going to enjoy it if you've played the game, but a lot of people have enjoyed this film without playing the game so give it a chance this is not something you should just let pass you by.

A very well done anime. The animation and special effects are of top quality and that makes the movie look very lifelike. The music was also very good especially during the fighting scenes and also during the sad scenes.
The fighting scenes were awesome as the characters had lots of energy doing lots of crazy moves and unbelievable jumping.
Final fantasy always makes good quality products. Meaning movies and games. I would recommend that every anime and final fantasy fan should watch this.
I give this anime 10 out of 10

AWESOME looking movie. I did play Final Fantasy VII so this movie was something I was lookin forward to for a long time. And when I finally watched it, I must say that it wasn't disappointing at all. The action scenes were choreographed really well and although some may see it as very unrealistic, I believe that over the top fake action that could never possibly happen is why we watch animated movies and series. The story wasn't too deep and it was kinda random but seeing all your favorite characters come back fight against the bad guys together was just great. If you want a deep story, you should go play the video game but if you want to see some awesome graphics and ridiculous action scenes, watch this!

In recent years, I've loved playing the Final Fantasy X, X-II, and XII games! Three of my favorite video games of all time! I never played Final Fantasy VII, so I imagined that knowing these characters ahead of time might have made this movie clearer and more enjoyable.
The characters in the movie really weren't as well developed as I would have liked, and towards the end there were just lots of different characters that randomly appeared. This made it such that the plot itself was only OK, but not something that really "WOWWed" me. The level of intensity in the movie was also uneven. At first, it seemed to have the right amount of intensity during the chase scenes and some of the initial action scenes. But then the action during the fight with that big monster thingy started to seem a bit over-the-top and silly.
I really enjoyed the animation and the times there was some way-cool action. I started imagining how it might be if some of my other favorite action Anime series (Elfen Lied; Evangelion; Full Metal Panic; Ninja Scroll movie; Speed Grapher) were made with such super high quality animation. Hmmm.... The music was well done for the most part, reminding me at times of some of my favorite Final Fantasy game OSTs.
So, I'd say the strong points here are definitely the great animation and some of the cool action scenes. But the so-so character development and plot knocked things down a bit. 4 STARS. 8 out of 10 Rating.

Posted by : du5k Posted on : 2007-04-26
I didn't play Final Fantasy VII, so I don't know the story before Advent Children. It isn't a bad thing. This movie didn't really get you wondering what has happened before the events of this movie.
It's good at what it does best; making the CG look cool. That's actually where the whole focus of the show went to: the animation. And it's done really, particularly the fighting scenes, which is likely why it took up most of the screen time. Too bad they are unable to be long scenes though.
It does not have a lot of story, as it just focuses on Cloud and his wavering confidence on doing what he do best: kick ass. Well, in the end he prove that he could all’s well and that ends well.
Doesn't sound like a very good storyline to follow right? You're right, but the thing is you probably won’t care much how much story there is. I’m not saying it bad though, it’s rather good but simple, BUT simple enough for this show. You just need a possible plot to follow be a excuse to bring on the fight scenes.
And since most of the attention is on the action which is done so well, it makes it overall very enjoyable.

Final fantasy VII... This anime was (in my opinion) one of the best anime in the history of anime.
Story/Plot 9: the story/plot of it was great. Starting with how they introduce the characters and how they ended the movie was great. The only downfall of this movie was the fact that they didn't give what the fans wanted, or in my case was a little more to why Aeris and Zack just came out of nowhere... where they just an illusion or where they real.
Music 9: to me the music was here and there it could have been better with a few scenes; however it sort of helped understand the protagonists view. Overall it could have been a bit better. I'll rate it a 9 out of 10.
Graphics 10: the graphics deserved a 10 for they went all out. People who played the games knew that this movie was a big upgrade to the game itself. This movies graphics is one of the best in the history of movies.
Overall Scoring 9: to me a 9 would be the greatest thing to score this right now; however if they make a new movie to show how their life is after this it would greatly affect this rating.

Now this if Final Fantasy!!! (not like Final Fantasy: Spirits Within) no hollywood in sight.
graphics: wow... just wow!!! it got some anime feel to it! I just love. and awesome fight scenes, background and effects. 10/10 perfect!!!
sounds: yup! that FF to you!! awesome music. my favorite as always is Sephiroth's theme "One winged angel" just awesome... 10/10
story: It's a little gloomy, well of course it is! try surviving from a meteor incident. its just perfect for FF7. and some unanswered questions are answered here... just like: whats up with the little pond in the middle of the church... in the game, it doesn't look so important. But here: WHOAH!!! very surprising!! 10/10
No need explaining this review. It's perfect for me...

This movie was breath taking. Everything was done in CGI and there was astounding realism in every movement, facial expression, even harmless blinking. The fight scenes were incredibly charismatic, a lot of "cool" moments, especially in Tifa's fight.
The biggest downfall is its story. While this production is highly above average, the story and the telling of the story hack away points. There were some events that took place out of nowhere, no real justification in everyone's actions. Also, unless you're faithful to the game of Final Fantasy, characters and their roles would just be thrown at you. The result, you try to catch it all, but you end up falling.
The music, well, if you've played the game, expect the same but more intense. They implemented the music very well, put it in the right places. However, the music isn't that much to rave about. The voice acting was goood for the most part, however, there were specific scenes which needed improvement. It's mostly the grunts and sighs that felt forced, or awkward...
I would have imagined a much more... charistmatic personality to Cloud. And then in the end, the finish off was quite cheesy. Also, very little spotlight was put on for characters like Yuffie, or Barret, for example. This production sort of made pathetic excuses to put in some action. They did great, but gave no good reason to fight. Final Fantasy: Advent Children did very well visually, but the surfacing of events told a terrible story.

Advent Children is, to date, one of the most spectacular movies I have ever watched. Some things, for example the graphics and character design, are absolutely flawless. However, the storyline is lacking in comparison.
Art/Animation: 9.5/10
I have never seen anything animated nearly so well as Advent Children. The fight scenes are undoubtedly the best part of this movie -- as I watched I could practically imagine myself in there, watching what was happening through a boxed window. The graphics are simply superb, and the character design is wonderful. For some reason the three silver-haired people (whose names I have forgotten) are not so well designed as Cloud or Tifa, but that is only minor.
Story/Plot: 7/10 (contains spoilers for the movie and the game)
Okay, I was quite disappointed with the storyline. The movie follows well on from the ending of Final Fantasy VII the game, and accurately portrays Cloud's sorrow at Aeris' death and his "feelings" for Tifa. However, I hardly picked up any plot at all. Many of the happenings were just random, and the children were an entirely unnecessary part of the movie. And at the end ... I hardly remember the ending, in fact, besides the fact that Sephiroth took an almightly thirty seconds to defeat. How tragic.
Characters: 7/10
What I didn't like about Advent Children was that it was just fight fight fight, with hardly any insight into any of the characters or any indication of their motives or beliefs. I would have liked to know more about the silver haired guys and their relationship with their "mother", for example. The characters seemed a little two-dimensional.
Entertainment: 8.5/10
Well I enjoyed watching it, at least. Especially the eye-candy during the battle scenes.
Overall: 8/10
Advent Children is a good movie if you are looking for something without an overly deep storyline, yet with good special effects and action scenes. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone, but it's an okay movie.

The movie is awesome. A must see for any and all fans of the "final fantasy" series. Though it does not come without its flaws.
The animation is spectacular, especially if you are watching it on a high quality monitor or screen. You feel like you could just jump right into it.
The music was beautifully done and "One-winged Angel" remake is unforgettable. It successfully blends alternative music with an orchestra and chior.
The characters are all in character altough Cait Sith is no longer on Mog and on Red XIII instead (due to the animator's hatred for animating the furry kind). But that's about it. No chocobos though which I found odd and disapointing but it's all right. And if you were wondering about any summons, Bahamut does make an apearance, Bahamut SIN that is. The series also introduces some new faces like Kadaj, Loz, and Yazoo all of which are Sephiroth clones and bare the similar silver hair. Another characters also places an important part is Denzel, an orphan that Cloud and Tifa watch over. But all the familiar faces make an apearance in the movie, except for Reeve who talks as himself once. The appearance of the other characters would have been nice although the story itself... I'll get to that later.
The fight scenes are spectacular. If you liked the fight scenes you've seen in the previews, then you'll love the fight scenes in the movie.
The Japanese voice actors are spot on. Each character sounds like how you would imagine them to sound.
The American voice actors on the other hand... just watch the movie in Japanese with subtitles, you'll be thankful you did. But seriously all the English voice actors sounded too similar and out of character.
The translation wasn't that good. The things that they had Cait Sith say... I was stumped... It had me scratching my head trying to make out what he was saying. And when it did make sense... it was like: "WTF? What are these translators thinking?" I suggest watching the movie with fan subs if possible as some of the translations on the dvd... their meanings get lost in translation and comes out as blah. Although some scenes that didn't make as much sense with fan subs make sense as I watched it again. So it's a toss up.
And now if you've stayed with me for this long, I give you props.
Now the story. It takes place two years after the events of the game (if you finished it that is). It even remakes the ending of the game, making it all pretty. But the story is actually kinda cutesi. As you would have guessed from the title, the story is about children or rather... the coming of age. This story is mainly about Cloud and Kadaj and their struggles. Both come to a realization at the end of the movie. Some found it alittle borring, and it might be. But as I said the fight scenes more than make up for some of the slower parts. Even though some of the characters in the game don't really make major appearances, they play an important role in the movie. True it may seem like there is only one all powerful person in the movie, it is about Cloud although he doesn't act like all the other all powerful characters out there. He doesn't quickly jump on the gun and be all powerful. He lets other people be the hero as he keeps on saying that he can't save anyone. In that sense he is kinda "Shinjish" (Evangelion). But any way you just have to watch it for yourself.
The extras are really good and are a must see. Especially one feature where it takes you down memory lane of the game. As well as interviews with the production staff and some of the voice actors.
Well all in all this movie is great although it's not perfect. And thanks if you managed to read throught all of this.
PS if you watch through the credits (or atleast fast forward through most of it) you'll see they added some special footage of a CG Cloud on his bike riding through RL open feilds and such. Areith makes an apearance and I like the very end... which you'll just have to see for yourself (be sure to take a good look a Red XIII).
