Story (4.5/10): Black Cat has a great start. The beginning focuses on the “Black Cat” Train Heartnet’s breaking free from his life as a cold-hearted assassin and meeting up with Sven and Eve. Afterwords, the story remains interesting for a little while longer. Unfortunately, events seem to become compressed. Apparently Black Cat suffered from budget cuts, which may have led to the story being cut short. Regardless, the final arc in the series, which was not in the manga, was fairly lousy. It would have been better to cut the final arc and flesh out the more fitting previous arc. I would have also enjoyed more adventures from the primary four without being forced to jump into the main conflict; but I can understand the lack of time this show was given. Overall, the execution and bad finale hurt this story.
Characters (5.5/10): Black Cat’s cast was not entirely original, but there were slight deviations in their character to make them interesting. I liked Train, though he was built completely from Kenshin’s mold; only Train retained his killing intent for his internal struggle on whether to get revenge against the antagonist Creed Diskenth. Eve was a typical emotionless child soldier who starts to become accustomed to human traits; her greatest moments result from the comedic results of her jealousy of Train when it comes to usefulness to Sven. The main cast of Train, Sven, Eve, and Rinslett is really fun together. Most of the supporting cast, like the Chronos Numbers, allied Sweepers, and antagonists were two dimensional, at best. I felt certain characters, like the antagonist Shiki, could have been used much better in the anime. Even the main antagonist Creed and quasi-antagonist/fan service girl Kyoko had their developments rushed. The antagonist Leon, on the other hand, got a back-story to make him more sympathetic. Even a condensed show bleeding its budget should be able to do a better job with the cool cast it has been given.
Oh, and Shiki is a girl; there was no reason for the anime, and even English translation of the manga, to make her a guy.
Animation (3/10): I felt Black Cat was kind of interesting with its fluorescent style of coloring. The animation was okay until halfway through the series when the budgeting issues became clear and the quality took a huge dive. All but one of the battles at the end was just a combination of still frames, which moved to flashes of light colliding with each other. It turned into a pathetic attempt to have a lot of action going on without showing any detailed battle at the end. A Shounen action show without a climatic battle is a failure. I want be lenient with the staff because I know they lost money, but I cannot consciously call this good animation. The character designs were nothing breathtaking to being with.
Music (7/10): The OP, Daia no Hana, is good song that blends a soft melody with a quick pace. The first ED is very silly, but entertaining. The second ED is more somber and soothing, choosing to be much more serious than the first. Overall, the soundtrack sticks well.
Entertaining (6/10): This may sound repetitive, but the first 10 or 11 episodes were good; but after that the show kept going downhill. It is a shame this project was not given more resources and time. Alas, the final product we are given feels and looks cheap. I would recommend the manga, even for non-SJ fans; but I would only recommend this anime for fans of Black Cat and SJ interested in seeing this animated.

Well, the animation may have some serious flaws, but for me the whole animation is simply very good but not excellent..
characters
The characters lack details that could make the storyline better, they could reveal more of the Chronos numbers to make the story better, though there are 13 of the numbers only few are revealed in the animation, and they could make Train's Chronos life a bit longer, but Train, Sven, Eve and the other more characters revealed were done excellently, and with good details
Storyline
The storyline was impressive, the assassin to sweeper story is completely original. Well, Black Cat is about a young boy named Train, his parents were killed when he was young and was abducted by an organization named Chronos which controls 1/3 of the world's population, trough eliminating syndicates that harm the flow of life. Train became the 13th member of an elite group of assassins called the Chronos Numbers which earned him the nick name Black Cat, who comes to deliver bad luck.
Train was on a mission to eliminate a biological weapon, named Eve when he met a guy named Sven which is a sweeper and helps him have a change of heart, to stop killing and become a sweeper too. Then later in the animation, Black Cat went on a conflict with a group named "Apostles of the Stars" which is lead by Creed, a person that adores Train as a heartless killer. The last part of the story might not be the best part but an excellent ending, Eve being a biological weapon was revealed to its limits.
Music
the background, opening and ending songs are all very excellent and fits the anime perfectly.
Although there are serious flaws that could make the anime better, I'll still give it a 10 for the excellence.

Although this anime has colorful graphics, pretty awesome fight scenes, and a bit of entertaining humor, Black Cat is nothing more than a huge letdown. The motivations of characters aren't well explained, which makes a majority of the characters seem shallow and undeveloped. Saya's influence on Train isn't properly clarified (do what you want to do?), nor is Creed's irrational, crazy obsession with Train, despite Train's constant rejections. What seems like a carefree and laidback style of the anime is really due to countless fillers that are confusing and a waste precious time going nowhere. But the series' most obvious weakness is its plot. From the get-go, the series is filled with shallow reasoning that result in an incoherent progression of events that don't make sense and isn't meant to make sense.
5/10

This show was actually good. I ran out of things to watch that interests me and I kinda forced myself to watch this. Train, a deadly assassin, turns good after meeting his very first friend, Saya. It was kinda sad how things turned out between them. I was hoping to learn more about her but the show didn't give away anything. I'm also a little confused with the girl he met in the mountains. I really thought that there was going to be a connection with Saya and the girl.
I would have given this anime a better score if only it didn't let some things went unexplained. Overall this anime was pretty funny and had a lot of action. I like the main characters development in the show. In a way, it was sorta sudden but I was already hoping it would get to the point. Anyways, again this is a good show. I would recommend watching it.

At first, I truly underestimated this anime. I read about it, and found out it was about an assassin who uses guns. That didn't catch me at all. But my little brother said it was pretty good so i thought i might check it out for a little bit. And I was overwhelmed because I wasn't expecting it to be as good as it was. I would say that it is a very bright anime with some lovable characters from the black cat who was a cold hearted assassin who turned a leaf to the sweeper Sven who was a considerate gentleman. The action sequences were pretty impressive too. There were many different characters with different abilities so fights weren't always the same. I also liked how they used a certain song as a refrain throughout the series. All in all Black Cat was truly an entertaining anime for me. A must watch for fans who love action.

This anime was good. It was funny and enjoyable to watch, and the episodes gradually built up to the climax.
Music: 8/10
Pretty good. I especially liked the opening.
Animation: 9/10
Character designs were attractive and distinct.
Characters: 9/10
The main characters changed for the better throughout the anime. They matured quite a bit, especially the protaganist, who started out a jerk still brooding over his sad past. However, he gradually grew more and more receptive to his friends. The antagonist also went through a big change as well.
Story: 9/10
Active and engaging. However, the ending episodes were a disappointment. They left the viewer going WTH? How'd THAT happen???
Overall: 9/10
Great anime to watch. Leaves the audience feeling satisfied and happy.

I watched Black Cat after my brother recommended.
Black Cat is an interesting anime. It's filled with action, romance and humor.the part that I like most is when Train (Black Cat) is given a mission to kill someone. His shooting skill is incredible.
Story:
Black Cat is about an ex-assassin (Train), bounty hunter (Sven), a bio-weapon (Eve) and a thief (Rinslett).Train used to work in Chronos but then he quit the job (all because his prespective changed by Saye). This made Creed jelouse and killed Saye. With Sven,Eve and Rinslett, he hunted Creed for revenged of Saye and destroyed The Messagers of thge Stars. When Creed and his organization been distroyed, some of the assassins in Chronos and The Messagers of the Stars kidnapped Eve.Train and Sven began their mission to save Eve.
Character:
I like Train's character from the beginning of the anime.Love the moves when he used his gun.
Song:
I like OP of the anime.
Overall, this anime is fantastic.

A very nice action based anime with bits of comedy and romance. I started watching this anime after a friend recommended it to me, and it was completely worth my time.
Interesting characters, appeals to both guys and girls. They have interesting character developments and backgrounds. The story clearly shows most main character's background and history.
Music is pretty good; personally I liked the first ending because it was very cute.
Overall great anime, but could have a more "interesting" climax.

Black Cat is another one of those anime that is begging for more, even if it is only 24 episodes long. Its slightly more on the serious side thoguh it does have its funny moments here and there. its also very cool and amusing to watch.
The characters were well devleoped and we see alot of character growth through out the series. For example Eve learns about the normal world while Train learns that you dont have to use your gun to kill. Many of the girl characters are also very loveable. This would include Eve, Rinslet, and especially Kyoko. Many girls also tell me that the guys in the amine are quite dreamy and attractive. So as far as character animation it was pretty good.
Black Cat also had numerous fight scenes that were all really cool. I especially like how unique the weapons that the members of cronos use. It allows for some fights that you never saw anything like them. and plus Train uses his gun differntly than we are used to as he uses it to deflect bullets and whack others with.
The music was really good. the opening song was pretty catchy. The first ending song can go both ways. You either love it or hate it. It provides a very unserious tone to a relatively serious anime. The second ending I found kind of boring though. The music within episodes I thought was really well done, and really helps to draw your attention to whats happening.
The only reason why I docked points would have to be the ending. The conclusion was very abrupt as if the like crammed three episodes into one. It felt really rushed.
But otherwise this one is a winner. Go watch it.

When i first heard of Black Cat from a friend, i was thinking... uhh.. sounds... wierd. At first i wasn't at all interested since pictures i've seen of the show didn't impress me. But after watching more than 4 episodes of the show, i found it quite interesting.
The way this show introduces it's characters are quite subtle, which is good. It explains each character properly so you completely understand who they are, what they do, and a bit of their past. The thing that annoyed me about some of the characters was their estrange coloured hairs. But with that aside, the anime was very well drawn making the characters interesting to watch. The past of these characters are interesting and the characters actions are also interesting.
The music of the anime isn't too bad. The opening theme: Daia no Hana By Yoriko has got to be my favourite in this anime. The opening theme graphics are interesting and don't exactly spoil the plot. The 1st ending song: Namidaboshi by Puppet Pet was so annoying, along with it's graphics, it was excruciating and.. too.. weird! As for the second ending theme: Kutsuzure by Mazda Ryozy was by far, better. The animation with this ending theme was: interesting, well drawn, and not an eye sore.
The music during the anime was well suited and fits the scene. The only thing bad about the music during the anime is that.. there isn't alot of variety.
The plot of this anime is well written. It doesn't give you too much confusion(most of the time) and it's not always serious.
I believe humour plays a good role in anime and this is the case in Black Cat, a combination of seriousness and different forms of humour(sarcasm is included).
This anime has been a pleasure to watch. The plot is very addictive!

Well, now that Black Cat's over, here's my new review.
The story started off with a lot of promise. I heard that it was a little different, organization-wise, from the manga, but that it was still done so that it was pretty well compared to the manga (besides towards the end). I really enjoyed the overall story of a guy discovering himself and finding what it means to be free.
The characters are all really well done. There really isn't a character in here that you can hate. They all have unique personalities, and play very well in those roles. I loved each and every character.
The animation was pretty decent too. I loved how the characters were drawn. Quite honestly, I was attracted to many of the male characters. The female characters were also quite cute.
I especially love the songs for this show, more specifically, I loved the OP. I found myself singing it at random moments in the day. It's a good song, and is really catchy. I absolutely love it.
My only deduction of a point from this show is how it ended. Towards the end of the series, the production seemed to get worse, like they put less effort in it. I heard rumors that the show lost its funding because it wasn't that popular, so that may explain why. The last few episodes were especially rushed, and I wasn't satisfied with the last episode at all. The crammed in a lot of things into the last episode, that really should have been expanded into a 24th episode.
Overall, however, I really enjoyed this show. The story is great, the characters are great, the OP is great, and all the characters are really good looking. This show makes my top 10.

For an anime that started off sooooo soooooo sooooo promising, it reached the edge and plunged downward... for me.
Character development was alright, so many characters got introduced that sometimes I couldn't tell who the main characters were. Not to mention all these bad guys that kinna just got blown away with the wind... AND they never explained what Sayoko really was! or who she was rather... I guess they vaguely hint it, but they leave too many things about each character a mystery.
Plots were either abrupt, short, or exhausting. It almost felt like a jerky bus ride where one minute your proceeding smoothly, you end up taking a detour without knowing it, sudden stop, then go again for a little and you arrive at the destination too tired to enjoy it. I can't really say that the story was rushed, but it was just... yes "exhasting" is the perfect word.
Opinions aside, this anime had a poor storyline. The way things progressed were very poorly done and I honestly can't say I liked this anime. It was just one of those animes that you started so you might as well finish it hoping the ending justifies the means... which it vaguely does which is why it gets a 5.

Hmm... some positives and some negatives. Here are the details.
Art/Animation: 7/10. This is one of my biggest griefs. What's with the lousy color selections. A lot of florescent colors in the episodes. Of course every action theme is a cut/flash scene and nothing is fluid. There is no great scenery going on here. The characters are drawn so typical.
Music/Sound: 7/10. About at the average of a good anime. Nothing special. Opening and Ending are not special.
Story: 6/10. Started out strong and slowly became silly and stupid. The story has a good pace but it gets old watching Black Cat kill anything and everything and Creed being an idiot mad man. The detective and assassin and thief and the bioweapon combination had wonderful potential for a juicy action theme but the angle was dried quickly. The comedy degraded the coolness of the story because it was mostly dry. There was no real hidden plot and it reminded me of a weaker Get Backers... a wanna be Get Backers but shorter and less funny. The ending was absolutely horrible (predictable, no one dies and the heroes win style). You dont need to watch the last 3 episodes.
Characters: 7/10 The personalities and characters were okay. It's very sad to see them placed on average art and an average story. I enjoyed the characters but the immaturity in an attempt to display comedy got old. Most of the villans are stereotypical. There is only so many cackles of evil megalomaniacs that you can take before you just think this is garbage.
Overall, an ok series to watch if you can tolerate the weak art and if you are a 16 year old who liks silly comedy. It starts good and loses steam around episode 15 or so. After episode 20 it became intolerable and stupid. I had to set my viewing to 1.5 normal speed to go through the dumb scenes.

Posted by : Modsoul Posted on : 2006-04-04
Black Cat involves a sweeper, ex-assassin, a bio-weapon and partially a thief. Two men, a lady, and a little girl (or a clone). They start off not knowing eachother but in the end all end up being nakama, or comrades/partners.
This anime story was not that interesting, the thing that kept me watching it was the beautiful animation, drawings and comedy. Fight scenes were either short, which is sometimes good (like in Basilisk), but wasn't always, or didn't explain enough. For instance, how did he/she win?
The story was kinda typical, an really evil guy (Creed) has his own group (The Appostles), that tries to take over/change things to thier liking. Creed has a good reason for being evil though. Not that exicting of a story. Although after the whole, let's get rid of this 'terrorist' group thing had ended, a new side plot, if you will, came up. Eve (bio-weapon) gets abducted and Train and Sven have to save her.
Apparently, the anime is different then in the manga (so I have been told). Story line in particular.
Opening and endings were OK. Opening never changed but ending did. First ending I liked because it was funny, second I didn't because it was too slow and boring.
Final episode, to me was too brief, too short, not enough detail.
Animation/Drawings: Much better then a lot of series and believe me, I have seen a lot. Drawings are more cartoony looking then realistic, which in this case is a good thing.
Music: OK. Not great, not bad, but alright. Background music was good.
Story: Could have been better. Major thing I didn't really like.
Characters: Cool, so were the abilities. Some, like the fat guy, were stupid and bothersome.
Positives: The comedy, animation, action, drawings, and background music.
Negatives: Length of series, story, some characters and second ending theme.

Story - 9/10
Animation Art - 10/10
Sounds/Music - 9/10
Characters - 9/10
Tilt - 9/10
Overall - 9.2
Based on - Episodes 1 - 20
Fansub Group - Oyasumi
Story - Elite and feared assassin, Black Cat(Train Heartnet), who works for Chronos, an organization intent to keeping world order in their own perspective. Black Cat one day, decides to leave Chronos and start a new life as a "sweeper"(bounty hunters) and along with his partner Sven they've been persueing targets from town to town. However, Train's past can't seem to leave him alone, haunting him every corner...
The story is good, they blend in "random" bounty hunting along with a story that will arc into a nice twist.
Animation Art - Those fancy gun slinging fights scenes are great, but don't think it's just all fancy shooting. Along the way, people with mysterious powers will show up, adding new flavour to the fighting. The art of both characters and scenery are very well drawn.
Sounds/Music - Some nice sounds and music that match the wide variety of scenes well.
Characters - Tense and the inability to converse his feelings with others describe Train, at least the former Train while he was Black Cat. The characters are developped well, going from one personality, to a completely different personality.
Tilt - Overall, very good anime. Definately worth watching for the story that is able to blend in all sorts of varieties of ideas and the art.
