The Kujibiki Unbalance OVA consists of three episodes (one, 21, and 25) from an imaginary television series of the same name, that is discussed and dissected by the otaku characters of Genshiken. It’s meant as a companion to the Genshiken series and doesn’t have much value besides parody.
Since Kujibiki is supposed to be a parody of the type of series that otaku love to pick apart down to the very last detail, it has a lot of stereotypical situations that are fairly funny when seen as a parody. The basic premise is that at Rikkyouin Academy, the student council is chosen based on kujibiki, or drawing lots. The entire school is divided into teams of four, and forced to compete in various competitions that you would see in any high school manga or anime, specifically one designed to bring out a few fanservice elements. Chihiro Enomoto is the male protagonist and as with many series like this, is pint-sized, weak, and has terrible luck. He is placed in a group with three girls, all with their own various quirks.
Kujibiki Unbalance makes little to no sense plot-wise, as it is supposed to show different episodes from a 26 episode series, and the Genshiken characters fill in a few plot points for the viewer from their discussions. The animation is a lot brighter than Genshiken and the character designs are a bit deformed, parroting a school daze moe drama.
If you’re a big fan of Genshiken, watching this OVA can be a bit funny, especially after hearing the various characters critique different elements of Kujibiki. However, outside of this context, Kujibiki Unbalance doesn’t have a lot of merit on its own, except to be a high school harem parody. This OVA is a fun extra to the Genshiken series, and was never meant to be much more than that. 4/10
