A review on this site as well as the Wikipedia entry for this series list Lord of the Flies as an influence as well as a similar work, thematically. This is misleading. Where Lord of the Flies was violent, mature, and psychological, Infinite Ryvius is, for the most part, emotional drama-driven and not much more adult in tone than other anime. There is shared subject matter between the two works, but they really are not all that alike.
That said, this series is not bad for what it is. Primarily set in space with a large cast of teenagers, it has significant mecha and political elements to it. Music-wise, Infinite Ryvius is unique. Most of the background music consists of hip-hop beats (drum loops with prominent basslines) with non-native spoken English lyrics on top. It's catchy at times.
The art is pretty typical for both the characters and the mecha. The characters have fairly simple designs, but their facial expressions are done quite well, especially in the more emotional parts of the show. The mecha, meanwhile, are gundam-esque, owing to the fact that the show’s visual designer later went on to work on Gundam SEED.
The story has major ups and downs. It starts out fine with an introduction to the characters and setting, but after that it drags. The first half of the show has too many confusing action scenes that abound with pointless technical dialogue. There are dramatic scenes mixed in that keep the series enjoyable, but overall there’s too much of an emphasis on the space battle elements and not enough on the characters.
The last half of the series makes it all worth it. After a major plot transition, the focus turns to the characters, both their relationships with each other and their personal, inner struggles. The main characters have three-dimensional, lifelike personalities, as well as realistic pasts and their maturation is highly dramatic and cathartic. At times, it does gets melodramatic, though.
The last few episodes in particular take the energy and emotion of the show to a high level. And in the climax, the characters mostly all resolve their issues in some satisfying, gripping way. The action scenes also improve because they become true extensions of the characters. This segment is also the only part that bears noticeable similarity to Lord of the Flies, with its discussion of the psychology of political leaders and authoritarian government.
Infinite Ryvius has a slow, uneventful first half, but it makes up for it with its strong character development and its emotional finish. Endure the more boring episodes and you'll be happy you did.

At first I had no clue what was going on after a few episodes, to tell you the truth, I still don't truly understand the reason behind certain things that took place in the series. My advice: pay Close Attention to everything. Overall this series is pretty clever and brilliant for being made in 1999. Normally I would have looked passed this because the graphics were too old for me.
What I liked about this series was the concept behind it, if you have read Lord of the Flies, then this series portrays the novel pretty well, but a little more extreme. The series focuses on the group of teenagers relying on their instincts. It even gives off a great sense of reality of how our present world is.
This would be the first series I have seen that displayed politics and how they are abused, no different than our society.
If you want some drama and a slice of life of politics, this would be something worth the time. Just pay attention.

Wow. I'm really glad I found out about this anime because usually i just go for the anime with high ratings, but somehow this one was drawn to me.
Infinite Ryvius is about hundreds of teenagers stranded on a space ship seeking help. But with no adults around, they are forced to create their own society based on rules they have to make on their own. Rules began to change as situations got worse and they are forced to put themselves in the line of battle.
I loved the intensity of all the situations that were going on. Sometimes I thought to myself, "wow this is sooo dramatic." Usually I'm not a big fan of excessive drama, but this series was definitely an exception. The intense situations kept me at the edge of my seat, wondering how the characters would cope with whatever was thrown at them. And there was really no slow part either. It began with a bang and that bang echoed throughout the entire series. Problems kept arising with enemies, food supply, and people not being able to get along. There were some relieving parts too that give you time to breathe, but after that you're gonna have to hold your breath as the story heads towards the climax.
Despite the fact that all the characters were teenagers, I found more maturity than I expected. There were characters who really knew how to take charge of the situations, but there were also characters who always caused trouble. In the beginning all the characters seemed to be put into groups. There was the outlaw group consisting of a bunch of renegades, an elite piloting team that always stayed on the bridge, and Kouji and his friends. But I found it interesting when the groups started to break apart as the situations got worse. Friends soon became enemies and people could no longer be trusted.
Animation and character design was pretty good and it was pretty consistent throughout the series. I also like the hip hop theme they had. Kinda awkward, but pretty interesting. I really loved how they remixed the opening song at the end of the series. I guess I'm just a big music freak.
I love shows with lots of intensity and I found this show to be extremely intense. So if you want a sci-fi show that will keep you at the edge of your seat, definitely watch this.

Overall:
As a whole, I thought Infinite Ryvius was a great show and is one of those rare gems that can entertain to a wide variety of interests. The show's premise is, on a basic level, a loose rendition of the novel "Lord of the Flies"... except in space. We follow a group of cosmic castaways after a mishap on their space station manages to kill pretty much all the authority figures. The survivors try to band together and create some semblace of society while they go through various trials and tribulations, and their well intenting tragic attempts to maintain hope and order in the face of ever increasing hardship is quite well chronicled in this anime.
Animation:
While undoubtedly quite good for its day, the animation is nothing to drop your jaw at compared with today's newest eyecandy. That said, however, it's still very watchable, and the animation, while not adding any bonus points to the production, doesn't detract from the real heart of the show: its characters.
Characters:
This is the category where Ryvius really shines. Very few anime can sustain a cast of characters as large as this one has and develop each one into a unique personality that each relates to the viewer differently. Primarily focused on how being castaway effects a variety of different characters, Infinite Ryvius comes across with flying colors here. Characters are realistically portrayed and dynamic -- no flawless Galahad types or malevolent Machiavellis. And to avoid spoiling anything for the reader, let me just say that following the development, hearbreaks, and struggles of the various characters was truly a treat.
Story:
The premise of the story is simple enough and can be summed up quite well with three words: Lost In Space. That aside, the plot twists are all very believable in a surreal way (hmm that didn't come across that great did it?) and suspense, drama, and tension is built superbly to a climax at the end. In any case, the plot really takes a rear seat to the characters in this anime... which is not entirely a bad thing :)
Sounds/Music:
The anime had a catchy OP which you'll get to hear sung in English in the last epsiode. The very fact that I can't, for the life of me, remember the ED or the background music points to the conclusion that it was, on a whole, immensely unremarkable yet not poor enough to merit notice.
Overall Verdict: 9/10... If I can marathon the whole thing and skip 2 meals doing it... it's worth a watch... ne?

This is certainly one of the anime that one should look for if s/he doesn't mind anything serious. I really like this animation cause of the characters, and the typical conflict amongst the characters. Though the start of the show was a bit confusing, the whole show wasn't as complicated as it may seem. But I think that the main character, Kouji, can be a turnoff sometimes with that attitude of his.
I give it 4.5 stars cause I still think that this is an interesting show that would keep me wanting to watch out for more, and also cause unlike most anime, this one tells us what happens after the story.

This anime ranks up there with Cowboy Bebop and Evangelion for my all time favourite animes. I liked everything about this series.
The plot, which is loosely based off the novel "Lord of the Flies", is a very original idea when it is put in to an anime. The animation I feel adds to the darkness of this series' plot; if you hadn't notice, the animation is done by the same people who did S.Cry.Ed (compare Kouji to Kazuma) and Gundam Seed. The OST is also really well done, I got pumped up to watch the series after I hear/watch the opening (one of my favourite songs :D).
There is also a bit of mecha action thrown in to the mix just to attract a few more viewers (I didn't care for it much... but it didn't take anything away from the anime). The crowning achievement of this anime though, has to be the characters. Even though there are a lot of characters, the series does a very good job of developing them and letting us know what their motives are. Also Kouji, as wussy as he seems to be, has to be one of my favourite characters in anime to date.
Even though this anime is paced pretty slowly at the start, it wasn't a big enough factor for me to knock off any points. 10 out of 10... I highly recommend this anime to everyone!

This show is very good and in my opinion, a must see.
The theme of Infinite Ryvius, the recreation of a society, is a current theme in world literature and I am surprised there is not many anime about that.
The Lord of the Flies is obviously a source of Mugen no Ryvius and you will find, if you have read the book, many similar situations.
The character developement in this anime is one of the best out of there and the reactions of the protagonists, who are by the way very different, are so real.
With the addition of some Science-Fiction elements, you will find a very interesting anime, and you won't be able to stop watching this from episode ~15 till the end.
I have only rated this with an eight for two reasons :
Firstly, the animation is a bit old and secondly, the main character (Kouji) can be a little boring.

Infnite Ryvius was a really solid show. (Even if it was a little on the rare side of trying to download it
