Within songs, there is power. Ravateels are the song maidens who sing these songs, using them for many things - healing, protecting.
Orica Mestomille is a Ravateel who, unfortunately, sings but does not possess the same "power" behind her songs as other Ravateels do. Only when she encounters Laina Barselt, a man whose airship crashed from the "Brastline", does she realize what it takes to "sing her song".

Story/Dev: 40%
Animation/Graphics/Design: 85%
Characters/Dev: 30%
Music: 80%
For a length of just 1 OVA, the pace was rather decent. Well, of course one can’t really expect much story development, or a deep plot. Indeed, the characters are also the usual archetypes. The main point scorers are obviously the graphics and music (and also the fact that I love this kind of RPG-ish style anime ) The graphics quality is superb, especially the designs for the characters’ costumes. The background is also considerably detailed.
While the music is also good, I’m more impressed with the ones for Shinkyoku Soukai Polyphonica, since both share the similar concept of mixing Music and Magic. Just that SSP does not have the fighting.
The main flaw is, of course, its length; 1 OVA of approximately 24 minutes is seriously too short. It is also a letdown that this was more of a trailer to promote the game (which I have not played), leaving lots of things hanging, which was quite a shame as I really liked the idea of blending Music and Magic. Also, the fight scenes could have been better for it lacks substance, and are all too short to be satisfying to the viewers.
Well it wasn’t exactly a waste of time; it was just decent, had quite a lot of potential if developed to a short series.
Personal overall rating: 65%
Giving it a 6 was kind of too low, so I’ll round it up to 7.

The very fact that they made only one OAV only to promote their game seriously displeases me. It has just about all of the elements any other series would have in their first episode. It has the ability to draw in the viewers, but then it widely leaves them hanging at the end of the episode.
I haven't played the game (I'm not only broke, but the game is no even out in the States yet), so I wouldn't know whether or not the any of the content is as similar to the things in the game. But that aside, characters were introduced pretty well (I suppose character development is out of the question for a promo), animations were nice, and the music was smooth. I found the ED to be questionable, though. It sounded nice, sure, but I think it really tries to transform it into an actual anime series, in which it practically isn't.
By the way, Chikage is too hooked onto this kind of stuff, haha.

Unfortunately, watching Ar Tonelico was a mistake and a waste of my time. Is anybody else tired of Japanese RPG's yet? Must just be me...
I'll be reviewing this on two scales. First, comes the review as an independent anime. Then, the review as a promotional tool for the RPG of the same name.
First up; the anime review. You get character introduction and a battle. That's about it. No plot development. No background information. No actual story. Orica and Laina are boring (I forgot the name of the third one). The animation is lacking. The ED gets a "meh". Can't get much worse than this in terms of story. Ending result: 1
Second; the promotional tool review. Well, I'm pretty much tired of Japanese RPGs and it looks like Ar Tonelico isn't trying to break the mold. However, character designs (particularly Orica) are nice. I'm guessing the story found in this episode can be found in the game, so if I wanted to know what happened, I can just buy the import (doubtful). It does pique some of my curiosity regarding how it all progresses later on. Therefore, it does it's job as a promotional tool. Ending result: 6 (It would be lower, but I like Orica's costume).
If you average out the two scores, you end up getting a five. Now, some members of the 'math gestapo' may point out my questionable arithmetic, but I believe you fine people will only see the truth in my assessment (as always). This episode is better off left alone.

This one shot OVA was okay, but I felt that they left too much out. Seems more like a preview to promote the video game. Events were pretty predictable, and the storyline held a good topic, but the revelation was poor.
Laina (sounds like a girl's name!) was a great protagonist that, would of course, give a new perspective to the skeptic Orica. Orica, was too much of a downer, that it was annoying. Curze was a cool character, and was dragged along somehow, hehe. Each of thsese characters had their moments, but there were many other characters that were shown, but not talked about. And that is what was lacking in the storyline. You'll get a plot, a fight, and a conclusion. The reason or the background behind the fight was questionable, and there wasn't really a conclusion, just what was solved?
The best thing about this OVA was the art, and animation. Smoothly done, and very pretty. I love the RPG-esque clothing, makes me want to make Orica's outfit and cosplay it! (or not...). The voice work and the music were also Ar Tonelico's best aspect. The music somewhat resonates .hack//sign's tunes, but better, and more melodic. Definitely RPG-like.
Two words: Too. Short.

I'm. A. Sucker. For. These. Fantasy. Animes... (especially if they're based on an RPG... >_>...)
Animation: Very nice! Orica's headgear is very catchy, and the character designs aren't bad at all (Laina KIND OF reminds me of Cloud from FFVII). The animators could have done a better job on the coloring, as it's an OAV, but overall, the colors fit the characters well. I loved the rendering of Hotaru alley - beautifully done landscape as they showed it from a faraway view!
Characters: One shot OAV. Not much to say about development. Orica has low-self esteem, while Laina is just kind. Curze, a stingy engineer. They seemed to rush the development of Orica at the end, but that fit the storyline well.
Although there were some "typical anime moments," the characters were not the usual stereotypes. They were true to their characters.
Storyline: The power of songs. See my synopsis for more details. I was drawn in from the first words - it really sparks the imagination. I'd like to see this anime turned into a series - it's a good idea for an RPG as well as an anime series.
Music: Now, I think these songs were composed by the composer of Atelier Iris's songs, if I'm not mistaken. I loved them - especially Green Lands. They put me in a fleeting, fantasizing moment.
Overall: A great watch for RPG fans ^_^.
