Story (2/10): Solidifies the entire .Hack franchise as a failure. As with its predecessor, Sign, Roots takes a molasis approach to telling the story. The sad thing is this anime actually starts off well. It was not as fast and intense as I would have liked, but the set up was intriguing. However, this interest really derives from the mystique of one character, Ovan, and less on the story. After the initial quest is completed before the halfway mark, the story felt like it stalled. Sure a significant event happens to throw the three main characters into abyss, and turn the main character into an emo avenger, but it still felt like the story could not progress. The second half focused entirely too much on the development of Haseo and Tabby. I wanted to learn about the mysteries of the world and Ovan, and see the characters develop that way; instead I suffered through boring episodes that seemed to go in circles. If you are going to devote an entire show towards character development then the characters better to constantly evolving, or at least interesting. I understand the end was the result of a sequel to this series, but it was still really lame. Basically noting is resolved, except Haseo is going to get revenge on Ovan. As for what the antagonist guild TaN had been doing all series... I'm not even sure, maybe because the plot never made this clear, or maybe because I simply lost interest (probably both).
Characters (4/10): Ovan made the beginning of the show interesting. His charisma and enigmatic background really helped viewers feel Haseo's attraction to him. But after Ovan is gone you quickly realize he was the only life at this party. I didn’t really hate or become annoyed with any of the characters, I just got bored with them. I guess it's hard to find people interesting, when their whole lives revolve around playing an MMORPG, even a sophisticated one such as "The World." The only two characters to stand out and who I like were the merchant Touta and the wise old man Phyllo. They were the only two characters who made the second half bearable.
Animation (7/10): I cannot argue against the animation. I did become annoyed about how some characters completely changed their appearance. Touta made sense, but I did not understand why others went this route. My eyes enjoyed what they saw, but the style lacked the same kind of impact .Hack//Sign had on me. There is good and bad in being part of a franchise; whereas the title will draw viewers on its own, these same viewers cannot help but compare the different series within a franchise.
Music (8/10): Not as phenomenal as .Hack//Sign, but still good. I liked the OP, and loved the first ED. Roots continues the techno and pseudo-techno songs and beats that made Sign's soundtrack so memorable. Unfortunately, this soundtrack is overall not as memorable.
Entertainment (1/10): There was more fighting than in Sign, but still not enough to call this an action show. I felt there were attempts at slap stick comedy, too bad I did not laugh often, if at all. There was a lot of dialogue to make up the heart of this anime. But these conversations seemed boring and meaningless. And it was really annoying how important characters in the beginning left, never to return or to return as different characters in the game (in some cases, this character change seemed to serve no real purpose). Roots could not even extract entertainment from the potential it had; This show convinced me to officially give up on the .Hack anime franchise.

I thought this anime was a huge let down because of the fact that .hack//sign was one of the first anime I ever liked.
5/10 story- the story is yet another run off of all the other .hack games about the key of the twilight. This show is way too slow for me. I tried watching all the episodes but found myself skipping episodes like crazy just so I could just finish the series.
7/10 animation- the animation is ok I guess. The only reason the animation is ok is because of the fact there are practically no fight scenes. Then when there finally is a fight scene the animation gets really bad. This was a major set back for me.
overall 6/10- This anime was a huge disappointment to me as a lover of the whole idea of .hack

Music (9/10): Like previous .hack series, the music is similar. It felt gothic like its predecessors but still, it was a catchy kind of music. So minus point for not being original.
Characters (6/10): The main characters were developed well, but it wasn't astounding because the characters feel fake. This is caused by the lack of integration with reality. A kid in school is not going to have the time to play as much as Haseo seems to be playing the game. So unless there is something that explains what is happening in the real world, the characters seems half developed. Also, the secondary characters were weakly developed due to the episode constraint.
Plot (5/10): The overall plot is very unoriginal. Basically, .hack is doing the same thing over and over again for every single series with different characters and slightly different endings. This lack of originality is a BIG minus.
Graphics (8/10): The graphics were decent and was nice to look at. But it wasn't very original since the game is consistent with the other series as well. But because the same places are revisited every time and the scenary doesn't change much, one wonders about the amount of time the people put into the series, obviously not enough.
Basically, this anime is not that great of an anime (unless you're an avid .hack fan). It's okay if you want to continue watching the same trend of .hack series with an ending that has no definite answers.
However, this series does attempt to connect the other .hack stories with this one. Thus, be on the look out for older series characters! However, the integration is weak and has no strong foundation. Basically, the old characters either feel like they don't belong or you end up wondering why they are there... and the series fail to provide any answers. So if you're into anime with lots of cliffhangers, this is the anime for you. If you aren't, then don't waste your time on this anime.

Follows like all the other predecicors of the .hack series, so nothing new was introduced accept a really really annoying dialogue system that you might frequently find in any mmorpg...only that those responses were limited and got boring real fast. Overall, the only real decent thing about this anime was the music, as .hack music never disappoints.
Plot is nothing special, pretty much just another run off of what you might have already seen if you bothered to watch the other .hack's. Mind you, the plot in those are usually rushed and hardly ever logical. Comedy is really non existent in this anime.
Backgrounds and animations aren't bad, character design isn't bad though I still don't get the whole cat character thing. The character motions are lacking though...and again, like all the predesors of the series
In conclusion, it's pretty much a waste of time but if you came home tired and you wanna watch someone else play an mmorpg instead of playing one yourself, this anime's the one for you.

This is an interesting anime, with strong character types and wonderful, very interesting, and proper animation for the setting. The setting for the story is a game called "The World" a vast MMORPG(Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game). After the main characters are established, the story moves at a pace simular to the other .hack TV shows very slow, plus if you want to understand the story you have to pay close attention as what happend last is generly not repeated and may leave you confused. Now one of my favorite parts of the show is the Music, very enthusiastic and perfectly abstract as the world is.
This show is good and has a deep story that is full of little quirks. This show is not for every one and if you have a short attention span I would stray away from this show, but if you can pay attention and notice the small details this show is for you.

The dialogue stands out the most in this series. It seems like the person in charge of the dialogues was drunk while writing the script for this anime. The conversations are very short, consisting of incomplete sentences like "Will Haseo..." or "Have you..." and the answers to those silly questions are pretty much the same like "Well..." or "You know it".
Excuse me, but you need to tell the viewer about the things that are going on and just repeating the same conversation over and over again doesn't help. The external action is of the same quality. Things evolve only veeery slowly and it takes several episodes until a basis is build for the actual story of this show.
The animation is of mixed quality. Being acceptable in the first few episodes it goes down the hill in episodes 6 and 7 so that there is no character movement and the action scences are just forgettable. I mean, animation doesn't consist only of beautiful backgrounds but mostly of dynamic movements and the movements in this series are really cheap.
The music is the only good aspect of this series. It really seems like the anime was created as a video clip for several Ali Project songs because in some scences the background song plays the major role instead of the flat characters.

I´ve only seen the first 3 episodes but this series is great! It's about a guy named Haseo who is a multiweapon character. A Guild named The Twilight Bridade finds him very "special" and tries to make him become a member. TaN is a Guild that monitors Twlight Brigades movements and tries to persuade him not to join them. Twilight is searching for the "Key of The Twilight".
It has the touch from the other 2(3) series. Same deep story (not the same same), great music, great graphics.
Music:
WONDERFUL! The music is decided by the mood of the anime.. Fits in very nicely
Graphics:
Top notch. Beautiful animations. Many details
Story:
The story is yet to be "announced". Aka .Hack//Roots has a deep story with will evolve in each and every episode witch makes it hard to "read" the anime.
This anime is truly worth my 10/10
