About two girls with the same name who are entirely different that meet by chance, become roommates and then very close friends.

-------------------------------------
The good:

The characters were pretty realistic and believable. I liked them all for the most part.

The music was pretty decent.

The animation didn't really stand out, but the style of the characters was pretty cool.

The plot was quite realistic. It had very deep relationships which were very believable and easy to get caught up in. The story came across well and I got really taken by the story quickly.

---------------------------------------

The bad:
I really didn't like Nana (Hachi) as the main character. She is really portrayed as a pure and loving character, but I just saw her as shallow and lacking any real character. She has no self control and is just not appealing as a main character. It's not that I hate a bittersweet plot, but it's just that one character's total selfishness ruins everything and everyone. Every character is very three dimensional except for Nana (Hachi.) Every character has flaws, and I love how they are so real and not idealized at all, but Hachi is just not a character I ever really liked. Takumi also was pretty hateable, but he was supposed to be the hated character so it didn't really bug me.

My judgment of Hachi's character is probably more cultural than anything. I may perceive her as shallow person, though anyone from the intended culture may just see her as lonely or needy.

-------------------------------------
I'm not much of a fan of drama, but I did enjoy this anime. It was really quite good. I think it could have been improved a lot, though it was good and kept me watching straight til the end. 8/10

NANA is a great series that deserves its high backing. Although it is catered towards a mature audience.

Perhaps what draws people in to NANA most is the series's characters. Viewers can feel more of a connection to these characters than other anime: they are real. They experience the same doubts, the same misconceptions about certain ideas as regular people do, and so the anime achieves a sort of "realistic" effect that can attract many. Furthermore, the series does not hold back on the more "immoral" facts of reality: prostitution, smoking. It gives viewers cold, hard facts about life, not holding anything back. Yet intermingled with this comes a sense of sympathy toward the outcast boy who falls into such a position in society, or of the depressed woman who encourages it. Ai Yazawa does a magnificent job of portraying this view of the world.

Character development is definitely given throughout the anime, for many of the supporting characters and most especially the "pink Nana," or Hachiko. She turns from a love-obsessed female to a somber, regretful yet peaceful woman.

The animation was mostly fluid, though at times the characters seemed TOO thin, like sticks. Ah well. This was also drawn in a more "realistic" style unlike other animes.

The storyline actually flows together like an interconnected web. There are almost no inconsistencies that I can think of regarding the storyline. It virtually shows both Nana's "falls" in life. I love how they also start with "Hey, Nana" at the beginning of many of the episodes, like the two "best friends" long to see each other again but cannot. And viewers do not figure this out until late in the series, adding to its quality.

The music also does a fine job of buttressing the certain moods that crop up in the series. Opening and endings are inconsistent with their memorable qualities, but all in all they aptly reflect the characters' emotions as portrayed through their rock music. Voices matched their characters well, and all in all made the series feel even more real, as if the characters themselves were talking to the viewers.

Few animes have achieved the effect that Nana has.

I'll say this simply, NANA is one of THE greatest animes I've laid eyes on, *And I have seen many*. This anime shows much promise with its gripping and incredibly addictive story line. Its basically a "slice of life" anime with a great mix of romance and drama that you can only see in exaggerated asian dramas *like the ones my parents watch*.

It's quite simply the fateful encounter of two young ladies name Nana K and Nana O, who are so alike yet as opposite as the sun and moon. And from there they discover friendship, love and the harshness of life.
I'll tell you one thing, its as addictive as any drama, and has enough characters for almost everyone to relate to.

Plot- The plot in the beginning is quite typical, normal girl who looks for love in Tokyo and follows her lover, as well as other friends. But it blooms into so much more. There's so much to say That You have to watch the whole thing to understand the complexity of it all.

Animation- Crisp, clean and with a unique art style. In the beginning people may complain about their thinness, their eyes, their foreheads, and the general style, but i assure you it'll rub onto you later on. And there's plenty of attractive little guys and gals everywhere.

Characters- All the characters are extremely nicely fleshed out, they have a lot of personality and they really stand out. Some of them follow some typical stereotypes, but you'd be surprised how deep each of them are. They arent typical punks/ preps and gangsters. THEY'RE HUMAN. The entire anime consists of their relationships as a whole. And each of them will either stir great pity, sorrow, love and hatred within everyone. They're THAT real.

Development- The anime moves neither rushed nor too slow, instead it seems to go in a consistant pace and not as many fillers as you may think. Each episode has relevance to their story and both Nanas have their spotlight and says throughout the story. The character development is AWESOME in all the characters they all change for the better or worse as the story progresses.

Sound- Wow, this area REALLY shines. The opening and ending theme is FANTASTIC especially since you hear them numerous times in the series and You NEVER get tired of it. The background music is also nice, soft when it has to be and dramatic when something dramatic happens. You'll never hear any complaints here.

This anime is wonderful and a great watch. I know women will get attached to it moreso than men, but it might teach a bit to men all around about the mindset of women, their hardships *and viceversa for men too*, and issues like (you know what), friends, jobs and employment etc.
A great watch, SO WATCH IT NOW! XDD

Nana's about two girls who meet on a train each girl striking different (though beautiful in their own ways), they find out they have two things in common. 1- They have both left their home towns to go to Tokyo. and 2- they both have the name NANA.

Through a twist of fate they end up sharing an apartment and a friendship starts. Add to that, one is a wanna-be rock star and the other is a sometimes airhead who falls way, way, WAY, WAY, WAY!!!! too easily in love.

It's a recipe for an entertaining comedy/drama/romance.

I only watched this anime on a recommendation from a friend whose opinion I trust. Boy was I surprised when I realised it was three in the morning and I had run out of episodes. What followed was a mad dash to get more episodes and at the same time my mind playing out the various senarios that might or might not happen in the next upcoming episodes.

Music 6/10 .
Definitely above average, reminds me of beck

Storline 7/10
It's the second most spellbinding thing in the show, ranging from hillarious to heartbreaking sad. The end of each episode seemed to have me hungering for more.

Characters 8/10.
The best part of the show are the characters. The two Nana's, with their differences as clear as day and night, each surrounded by a group friends. These friends each pretty unique with their own stories.

I consider this to be a peach girl/beck type show.

An excellent work about romance, music and real-life issues. The characters are all very detailed and you can feel as if they are real people. The soundtrack is also really good with openings and endings by two really great singers inspired on the anime bands/singers. The plot is also really amazing changing completely sometimes giving a sensation that the characters are living a real life. Like the others reviews said the voices fit perfectly to each character even when they show different sides of their personalities. A must-see to any fan of music and drama animes and to anyone who searches something with a good story.

Here is an anime worthy of your time. A great storyline with truly likable, real characters. There is some serious character development, heratbreakingly sad scenes; you really connect with the characters.

This series isn't as popular with Western anime fans. It's very new still (at least the anime is, the manga's about five years old!) I really hope it can gain popularity in the states.

It's a series worthy of your time.

Simple story. Amazing characters and voices that match with them. A plot you can relate to. About music, romance, pain, loneliness and keeping up with life. It's extremely addicting, I'm waiting for the next episode every day, I check on Anime-Source for it, duh ;p

This anime stays simple, yet is heart-warming and you just can't have enough of it. It's modern, yes, the clothes the people wear, the bands, their style. Something that amazes me is the characters voices, they are soo well made and each character has a voice that goes perfectly with it. Junko has a mature woman voice, which suits her. Shouji has a teenager’s voice, he's a bit slow and has problems deciding stuff, typical teenager. Hyosuke has a cunning voice, goes with his cool character. Nana has a nice ’s voice, which is, what she is. The other Nana (singer one) has a mature voice because she's a singer, you could almost say it's manly, and yes she's not that feminine, or so it looks.

It's all hard to explain cause it's not something u can put into words. Voices match characters perfectly, that's it. I can relate to this anime almost entirely, why? I'm a musician, I'm 16 => the stuff that happens on the anime is REAL LIFE stuff, not some made-up 1guy3girl kind of plot. It's about romance, work, and keeping up with life itself when you think you've lost your track.

Go watch it, Nana is one of the animes I've got on my mind whenever I check Anime-Source.

I have only watched the anime on Youtube and so far, I have been addicted. It has this certain charm to it that makes you want to keep on watching. It is an incredible anime, that is easy to follow. It usually comes out once every week on Youtube(which is where I watch it), so how I manage the wait is a mystery. I don't remember any other anime that makes me feel like this.

The female charactors are unique and beautifully drawn. The same goes for the male charactors. Their long, narrow faces make them beautiful in their own way. The outfits change, thank goodness, and matches their personalities. The outfits are pretty and look modern, and like something I would wear.

The voices match their attitude and I couldn't picture any of them with another voice. For the active characters the voices are loud and clear. For the cool ones, well, it's just plain cool.

The plot is simple yet it does its job. The plot is easy to follow and is not something you have to go back to to watch again. This story is something that I think some people can relate to.

I rate this a ten because as I said before, I have become hooked on this anime series.
