This film reminded me a lot of Grave of the Fireflies, which is a bad thing, because I really didn’t enjoy that movie. The biggest similarity between the two films is that the main characters aren’t fleshed out, even as there are tragic and unfortunate things happening to them. Also, the action scenes in both films, while being interesting in a morbid, bloodthirsty way, come and go without any lasting effect. Both films have smooth animation and sophisticated backing music, but feel lifeless and without purpose.

There are a number of other issues with this film. First, there is too much dialogue used in many of the scenes, especially those with military officials. Secondly, the plot those scenes try to advance is a mess. The twist at the end negates the validity of all of the events leading up to it, and as a whole it’s pointless, because the only outcome is that a few insignificant people die.

Third, the Little Red Riding Hood motif used throughout the story is contrived and relied on too much. It was interesting to hear the darker version of the story that was used, but the film failed to match up the fairy tale with the plot events coherently and it ended up being a cheap plot device used in place of actual character development.

Fourth, and worst of all, the moral in a film as saddening as this one is nowhere to be found. The conclusion of the film is that some people are inherently different than others, but this doesn’t apply to my life at all. It’s like Romeo and Juliet in that, sure, it’s sad how everything ended up, but the moral doesn’t apply to anything other than the particular fictional scenario that was invented.

This film, while having high production values and intense fighting, fails to entertain fully because of its weak plot, flat characters, and lack of meaningful storytelling.

Awesome show, though I would have prefered a bit more story to it.

The directors chose to use more "adult" character models for this movie... as opposed to the typical anime convention of having "eyes that take up half the character's face". (Think Kenshin OVA characters compared to the Kenshin series characters... for those of you who dont know what I'm talking about.... well.... nevermind...). This feature suits this movie extremely well as it is more "real" and express a greater depth of emotion.

Aside from that, the animation itself was superb. As to be expected from Production I.G. However, the story itself didn't give them much of a chance to show off their superlative animation, which was a pity.

Soundtrack was... alright I suppose. I've heard that the sign of a good soundtrack is that it doesnt get in the way of the story, and Jin-roh's music certainly did that.

The show in itself is more like an adult (dont get the wrong idea here) version of the children's story "Little Red Riding Hood", although with an interesting twist. The mood is definately much darker - just look at the opening sequence: A girl involved in anti-government protests blows herself up after being cornered (Fantastic start-to-the-show though... I can't think of any other anime's opening sequence having quite the same effect).

If you're looking for a full-frontal action show (the creepy "red-eyed" soldiers might have captured your interest)... sorry to disappoint. However Jin-roh offers an experience unlike most other animes. Great story... great visuals... I'm personally suprised that it didnt get better reviews...

It took me quite a while to come up with a decent review for this movie, as it is quite a complex, disturbing, somewhat even burdening and surely a very unique watch.

Jin-Roh surely isn't your typical anime-movie. This one takes place in an alternate world in which World War II was won by the Tokyo-Berlin-Rome axis. Having said that, it is pretty obvious this movie is going to be dark, and yes - it is. The colors in this movie are nearly always cold. The whole atmosphere in which it takes place is, to be honest, quite difficult to handle. It is dark, and quite scary (I'm pretty sure the fact the special forces look like terrifying war machines isn't coincidental :).

Jin-Roh features many symbols, to say the least. Be it the whole Little Red Riding Hood story, that accompanies this movie all along, or the wolves, that you can easily see are an obvious symbol from this movie's title. It also has a historical value. Be it the actual existing weapon models used, or the whole plot, showing a situation that could easily be reached today, in various places in the world (Africa, Russia, the Middle east, Spain, and the list is long). This movie, in my opinion, protests against war, and carries an important warning message!

This movie is not an easy movie to watch, it required me to 'crack my skull' interpreting it afterwards, as it has many, deep layers levels and meanings to it. The suffering of both character seems real, and even though the whole world in which it takes place is completely fictional and is very hard to relate to, the characters are very real, and are easy to empathize with.
It beautifully combines excellently built characters and relationships with a very fickle, interesting, cruel and eventually also heartbreaking plot, thus creating one of the most dramatic watches you will get to see.

The animation in Jin-Roh is top notch. It doesn't involve CG, and is very beautiful and smooth. The colors are very dark, as I've said, but they sure do fit in with the general atmosphere this movie offers and delivers. The character design is also good. The characters actually look Asian, which is, as already mentioned in one of the reviews, kind of hard to get used, but isn't really a setback.

The soundtrack isn't Jin-Roh’s best point, in my opinion, but it surely is decent. The musical themes are pretty good, but are too constant (as in, there aren't enough points in which a musical theme isn't played in the background, making the watcher become indifferent to the music in some point), unlike most other anime-movies I've seen lately. Some themes emphasize the drama, others the suspense, and some simply should've been kept out in my opinion.

Overall, Jin-Roh is a unique watch. It's not your typical action/drama/fiction movie. Not at all. It really is a slow one, and nothing real happens throughout the whole movie, yet you still remain fascinated and glued to the screen for 110+ minutes. It would've gotten a higher score, had it not had such high demands from the audience.

If you have any interest in politics this movie is for you. Even though the movie takes place in a fictional Japan where the Nazis won WWII, it is very rooted in the real world. The movie has a real, live action feel, and the tone is dark and somber, yet the animation is jaw-dropping. It is very fluid and realistic. Some have said the plot is too slow and the movie is lacking in the action department, but these are just people with no attention span.

The characters are real and complex, they are fleshed out beautifully and we really care what happens to them. The story is complex and disturbing, abounding with insane, unpredictable plot-twists. All in all, this is a masterful cinematic experience that should have found a wider audience.

I liked Jin-Roh because I am a nazi about suspension of belief; Jin-Roh managed to pull me in and keep me there. Jin-Roh is also has nazis, as in this film, they had won WWII and we

I first watched Jin-Roh expecting an action anime; the cover conveyed that with the intimidating glowing red eyes of the armored soldier. I was not disappointed to find more of a drama though.

Jin-Roh's story was intriguing to me, it wasn't too complicated and wasn't too simplistic. Political themes echoed throughout it. I would have liked more action scenes, especially with those suits of armor, but I am still satisfied without my fill of guns and blood.

The animation was another high point for this movie. It looked great, even with its dark mood everything was crisp and clean. It couldn't have been better.

I gave Jin-Roh a 9. This was definitely one of my favorite animated movies. It tied all of its components together; story, animation, mood, realism - all came together to make a great movie. I would recommend this for at least 14+ mature crowd, just don't expect an action movie.

I watched this dubbed, so it could affect my judgement on the anime. The dub wasn't that bad but nor was it that great. The animation is spectacular as with all Production IG work, this apparently is the last drawn animation for them before they switched over to computes, even without computers the animation is awesome.

The post war world war two theme where the Nazis are still around was pretty interesting as well. You'll notice tons of borrowed equipment such as German halftracks, helmets, rifles, MP40s and the ever popular weapon, the MG42. This brought an interesting theme to the movie with some historical weapons and equipment being used in the movie.

The actual plot line was, I thought a bit contrived. The whole conspriracy plot was medicore and the movie might of been better with just a more direct two people caught on the wrong side of a battle sort of thing. It was interesting however overall so its still worth a watch. 7/10 in my books.

This is a very deep movie. It was realistic and serious. The storyline was superb and the character development was top notch. It was weird seeing Asian characters but I got used to it quickly.

You really connect with the characters in this one and feel their emotional pain. This isn't a movie for kids and has no comic relief.

This movie is about real people without any special powers or stuff like that. It keeps a dark mood through out the entire movie so its not for those who like fairy tale stuff.

A serious anime with great storytelling, though it would have made a better movie.

The entire story revolved around one stigmatizing event at the begining but never really evolved from there. The art was spectacular with significant attention to detail, but while the action was nice and bloody, it remained bland. This is a great drama, and very adult in nature (not hentai). The deep thinkers and people who can enjoy abstract qualities of your non-typical anime will enjoy this greatly... while the more simplistic anime fans will likely toss this aside.

Although I can't recommend this anime to everyone, this still remains a great work and definately for your atypical anime fan.

Jin Roh is one of those serious anime movies that comes along and really makes you sit and think about things after you watch it. The plot has its twists and turns, but didn
