[Story: 6.5] One thing about Otome that sets it apart from the other Trap shows is that the cross-dressing part is more of a minor plot device than the actual plot focus of the series. Thus unlike most trap shows, Otome had very little ecchi scenes or jokes about the protagonist’s plight. In retrospect, the concept of the protagonist being a guy doesn’t really play much importance. So on one hand, as a Gender-bender series, it fails. Those who pick up this series hoping for a bunch of Trap jokes then no, this is not the series you’re looking for. In that aspect, Otome is much more similar to Ouran High School Host Club. Otome is nothing more than a simple series revolving how the girls faced various challenges in their lives and how the protagonist helped them through as their Onee-sama (think Marimite and related posh girls’ school series but with less sparkles and bubbles).

[Characters: 7.0] The occasional chibi forms the characters add to the quirk and chuckles. On the whole, while the characters aren’t memorable, they are interesting to watch. Ichiko is annoying though; it was funny when she made her first appearance with that rapid-fire speech but it does get wary after a while. Though throughout the show, we get to see the dynamics of the cast, I’ll say that the real highlight is around the last few episodes. That’s when the characters truly shine.

[Art: 7.0] The art is beautiful; it has that light, gentle vibe which certainly helped in enhancing the enjoyment of the show. The colors, background, character designs are all great. Especially the character designs, I might add – elegant indeed.

[Music: 8.0] The choice of music is really appropriate – light, soothing and elegant. Suits the mood of the series. The theme songs didn’t leave much impression in me though.

[Summary] Tagging this anime under Harem and Romance is considerably misleading – the latter may be arguable, but of the former, Otome wa boku ni Koishiteru is not a Harem series. It may not be a must-watch, but it would be a pity if one were to turn away from this series thinking that it is a generic harem anime.

Don’t forget to check out the OVA; it’s hilarious.

Personal Overall Rating: 7.0

Otome wa Boku ni Koishiteru has a very interesting (and dare I say fun) premise; a guy is sent to an all girls school dressed as a girl where only three people (the principle, his teacher, and his childhood friend who’s also enrolled at the school) know of his true identity. A very unique plot-device that used correctly can lead to all sorts of great comedic, romantic or even dramatic scenes. Unfortunately this anime does not make good use of this great premise.

The first 3 and the last three episodes were all excellent and if the rest of the series was as fun and interesting to watch as these five, I would be giving it a score of 9 instead of 7. The jokes (although not super original) are all very funny and character reactions and developement are priceless. However the middle arc of the show is a big disappointment. I felt as if every event in these episodes would have happened regardless of the main character’s gender. You could replace the guy in drag with a girl and it would force no changes on the plot and events, which is again very disappointing; to have such an excellent premise and fail to make use of it for half of the show is simply unacceptable.

Though I will give the creator props for excellent character development (especially when it came to Mariya, the main character’s childhood friend, and Takako, the student body president); too bad their characters only started to shine during the last few episodes.

All in all this show to me was the anime that could but didn’t quite get there. It starts with a bang and the ending leaves you both satisfied and happy, however the middle arc drags on too much and feels neither like a comedy nor a romance.

Initially, it appears to be one of those lousy harems with a cross-dresser or she-male mixing in an all-girl crowd. Well, this part is right, but the series isn’t about experiencing ecchi scenes with girls flocking over to offer their bodies to this person they thought is a girl. Nah, it’s more about the romance and devotion to this person as due to his personality. Although the boy-turn-girl parts are somewhat unrelated to most of the story, it’s still interesting to see how a guy reacts to the feelings of these girls, who look up to him as an Onee-sama.

Plot
Your very default plot planned, showing the daily lives of the main characters. Character development for each of the main casts for the first 8 or 9 episodes, then a minor climax to end it off. What’s nice is a very satisfactory ending is gives; though sort of open ended, it brings a happy ending to all. The completeness it gives is what makes me like this anime.

Story Style
This would be a very “comfortable? Watch; no much plot twists, but things don’t get too complicated or serious, with surprises here and there. The series really lighten up with the chibi comedy, the “tsundere? Factor of the Takako and the cheerful mood setting.

Animation
The chibified characters are too cute. While I somewhat doesn’t like the way the character faces are drawn, they still looks nice enough. I liked how the opening and ending theme had two versions for different season uniforms.

Music and Sounds
I liked the music; the really set the mood for the anime. The VA, however, gets on my nerves sometimes, like when the ghost girl talks like a machine gun. Ending every sentence with “nanodesuka? Or “gozaimasu? Or “onegaishimasu? Gets irritating, but I suppose it’s the style of an all-girls school.

Overall
A very nice watch, although some parts like to get draggy.

just by judging from the title of the anime, one would think that it would be a anime of serious romance between girls, and it was one. I am one who is very anti-homosexual and I refused to watch it initially, but after reading some of the reviews during my leisure, I realize that it is not of what I expected from. The main character, though has a girly voice, girly looks, and a girly personallity, is actually a boy. After knowing that this is actually a pseudo-yuri anime, I watched 3 episodes in a row.

If anyone knows the manga Pretty Face, this anime is quite similar to the manga. They both have some chibi and ecchi scenes. Both of the main characters, in their attempt to behave as a girl, sometimes show boyish personalies in desperate moments. This causes them to gain popularity instead of making themselves more suspicious.

Overall this anime is worth-while to wacth. I have no comment on the characters' design, the plot, and the drawing because they are good. The length of the anime is one of the short coming of this anime as most of the people agree that it's a bit too short. I'd rate this anime 9/10.

Storyline/Plot: 10/10
The story started off by explaining the reason why Mizuho have to study in a all girl school (Reason: His grandpa's dying wish). With the help of his childhood friend, Mariya, Mizuho was 'transformed' into a girl in terms of manners and appearance. As the story continues, Mizuho enountered different situations which were all endearing to watch. Most the epidsodes contributes to the main plot which was to show the relationship between Mizuho, Mariya and Takako. The entire storyline was original, appealing and terrific. Truly a job well done.

Character development: 9/10
Due to the short span of episodes, the characters' individual personalities and background were not very clear.(Example: more can be shown for Takako and Mariya) However, most side character was given a fair share of focus (Up to one entire episode was given to Kana, Yukari and Ichiko) which was good. Mizuho's character was well developed.

Graphics: 10/10
The characters were beautifully drawn and portional. The surrondings were scenic. Objects such as teapots, dishes and flowers were lovely drawn too. The Chibi version were extremely kawaii and adorable which enhances the overall watching experience!

Music/Songs:10/10
Both the opening and ending theme were lovely and lively. Very suitable for this love comedy anime. "Beautiful day" by Yui Sakakibara was my favourite. Added with the cute Chibi characters at the ending theme made "Beautiful day" sound even cuter!!! GREAT!!!

Overall:10/10
I really have a very fun time watching Otome wa Boku ni Koishiteru and I would recommend it to fans who like this genre (Don't be mistaken, this is not a yuri anime, =) ). This anime helps bring lots of joy and entertainment which makes it such a wonderful anime. I feel that this anime could have been longer though.

Storyline: 9/10
A pseudo-yuri romance story between the protagonist, Mizuho, his childhood friend, Mariya and the student council president, Takako.
The story started explaining the reason for Mizuho's entry into a girls school and although it revealed his mother's past in the school, towards the end, it is actually emphasizing on the romantic relationship between the 3 characters. Quite a few hilarious scenes, mostly the story is quite light hearted in nature and easy to digest and understand.

My only complaint is that the series could be longer, though if it's any longer the story might have fillers, guess it's a double edged sword to have more episodes.

Characters: 9/10
Well elaborated for a 12 episode series. Each of them are described in enough detail to appreciate their individual personalities. I especially like Mariya, for her sporty and enthusiatic personality, and Kana, for her lolita self.

Music: 10/10
This is one series with an excellent opening and ending theme. The 'chibi' nature of the ending theme make it worthwhile to watch it by itself without the anime!

Graphics: 10/10
Animation was great, both the normal and the 'chibi' ones. The 'chibi' ones are especially cute.

Overall: 38/40 ( 95%)
A great anime to be watched for its cuteness and original story.

This story was one of the few anime's that I actually followed on a episode by episode basis. Just waiting for the next episode was fun. I usually hate to wait and this was no different, but in this case the episodes were so good that I was unable to wait.

I usually hate the idea of the hidden gender where a romance develops. I found that other then the first couple of episodes there wasn't any of the problems that are usually associated with the hidden gender other then some "lite" humor. I think that my normal hangup is when the main character is the only one bearing the problems of the gender change.

Like other people I thought that the series was just too short. While there was a few episodes that I kind of considered filler I found that the end was very rushed. The first three episodes I found had a perfect pace in development and delivery. The other ones were a little off for my tastes. especially 11 and 12.

One other aspect that I really did find refreshing was that while there was ecchi shots, they were not really a focus. The little bit of ecchi gave me the impression of not trying to make it a focus as well as not trying to avoid the subject. This made the ecchi type subject a background subject that just never became an issue because it was not a blatant part of the series.

Overall I recommend this series highly to anyone that likes a really sweet show. If you want violence and henti or if you want absolute "G" rated type material then I would not recommend this. Not that you will often find any absolute "G" rated type animes ever.

Otome wa boku koishiteru aka Otoboku is probably the best and perhaps the only Yuri-Straight anime out there. The very fact that Mizuho holds the position as a Hero and Heroine is truly unique and amazing. Aside from being really interesting, romance develops in a way you wouldn’t really call it a Shoujo-Ai since the very fact that Mizuho is genetically a Male! Which makes me wonder if this is categorize as Harem?
(Shoujo-Ai/Yuri carries the meaning of love/romance between girls.)

Animation quality was great and its simplicity is just perfect for the anime. Character design were simply beautiful, all the girls and the only Guy (Mizuho) were extremely eye catching. Aside from suitable and interesting personalities, characters and story plot blended perfectly to bring out the mood.

Usually I found myself attracted to female characters in anime. However, in Otoboku’s case, I found myself attracted to Mizuho who happened to be the hero of the story. The very fact that she looks so beautiful and Horie Yui being his seiyuu, bang~!! A cupid just shot me with thousand love arrows.

This anime comes with its own unique SD aka Chibi Mode as well. I found this extremely cute and interesting and no doubt I love how the producer keeps balance in the character design between normal and SD mode. Furthermore, Character design consistency is top notch! unlike Yoake Mae Yori Iru Na which boost with extremely beautiful char. Design but failed to keep consistency.

Not to mention that the interchange for commercial (Usually occur after about 11-12 min of the series when the episode proceed to the 2nd half) in episode were always different in each episode and really funny at all times. This is something to look out for in every episode which is something very different from other anime that is often looks the same in every episode.

Music and BGM wise were near perfection in my opinion. The opening and ending is as good as it can get. The ending clip is way too attractive in a very unique way enough to keep u hooked. I found myself glued with Mp3 with the opening and ending at work till my boss banned me from using it…

Overall; This is an extremely unique and great anime not to be missed out by anyone. It maybe labeled as Yuri but I urge audience to be more discreet and put aside this and give this a try. Unlike some Yuri series out there that really concentrate on Yuri-ness, this series were slightly improved to suit more fans out there with different taste and interest. Highly recommend to everyone who might want to give a Yuri anime a try and of course those who are all-rounder-anime-watcher like me. (I’ve already repeated watching this series all over again about 4 times…)

The little bit of Ecchi-ness proves that the producer also aim at male audience and certainly it got me~!
All in all I found this series to be one of my most favorites and a fun watch. However, being only 12 episodes sort of sadden me a little but the great ending just perfect to end this wonderful series. Another Great work Studio “Starchild"! Give yourself an Applause!

I normally deduct points in my reviews if the animes I watch have problems. Boy, does this show have problems. To start with, the anime was simply too short, only 12 episodes, with a possible 13th to be released on DVD later. This, to me, made the story feel rushed, like they were trying to fit everything in. And then there are the problems with the plot. The idea of a boy attending a girls school with the consent of the headmaster, the problem of his pretending to be a girl, and getting away with it. All told, this anime is silly.

So having said that, why do I give it 10? To put it simply, it was so much fun to watch, that despite its flaws, despite it being too short, I loved this show. Maybe it's the whole genderbending flavor of it. Maybe it's the combination of seriousness and humor. Or, more likely, it's both. As I was watching it, I became wrapped up in the story and the humor, and was able to overlook its many flaws. To put it simply, I just completely enjoyed this show.

The music was fun to listen to every time. The animation in the actual show was terrific. And the ending animation, with its exaggerated chibi characters was funny as well, though I didn't care for it when they brought it out in the actual show.

All told, I highly recommend this series. I plan to add it to my list of animes that I will watch more then once, and assuming its ever licensed in the US, it is one I will definitely add to my collection.
