I wonder if this movie was overlooked. Anyhoo, it was a great movie that I think is worth watching.
Story:9/10
The storyline was simple. Simplicity is great for these kinds of things, where a transition is made from the real to a fantasy world. Basically put, the entire movie is about the main character conquering tribulations by making decisions through the purity of his heart. It's the whole "Doing what you think is right" thing- simple, very simple to understand, like a Disney movie.
The whole movie kinda plays out like an RPG game, which I liked, cuz it just made everything even more simpler to understand. "5 powerful jewels, grant a wish, an occasional random encounter, GO!"
The only part about this movie that kind of sucks is the slight predictability, corniness, randomness, and etc... that you get from basically almost any anime you watch. If this story were to somehow still remain simple, yet unpredictable and not corny, then that would have been perfect.
Art and Animation 10/10
It's a movie with Gonzo on it's back doing the visuals. Gonzo did a great job here. Everything had top notch quality. I'm not sure, but I think the WB did some work on this movie too.
Characters 8/10
The main character was sometimes annoying in the starting, while the antagonist was like a cliche emoboy that was not easy to sympathize with for the most part.
Their character relationship was crumby in the starting, and the whole time through, you kind of wonder why the main character considers the antagonist his friend after only a short crumby interaction in the beginning of the story.
WARNING-There was a "FURRY" relationship here involving a cat girl (more cat, less girl), which was kind of disturbing, and kind of "Cute"?
Music: 10/10
Aqua Timez rocks! The song fit the mood, being it was a laid back and positive ballad. I'm not sure if it really was a balld or not, since I can't understand Japanese.
Meaning, Message, Flavor 9/10: The feeling and message of this show was very positive. It delved into concepts such as the meaning of life, purity, rhiteousness, courage, etc.. etc... all with a pure and positive outlook. Watching this movie did not make me feel like I wasted all my time watching trash or something.
But be warned, if you aren't in the mood, you won't be in the mood. It doesn't really posses enough of that quality that draws an tired audience member into it.
Overall- I recommend this to somebody who's tired of the trashy anime they see around them, and are in the mood for something positive, simple, and pure.
But if you're hunting for the "next greatest anime you will see this year", Brave Story doesn't make the cut, although it very well could have.
