As the mystery deepens the investigators find even more puzzles and fewer answers. A mysterious "Puppeteer" is involved and seems to be the cause of the suicides, vast numbers of children have been disappearing without anyone's notice and Section 9's members are starting to receive warnings to not get involved with what's identified only as the "Solid State Society"

I strongly suggest watching the TV series before watching this movie. Unlike its namesake this movie is not a stand-alone and it assumes you have already watched the TV series. There is this assumption that the audience already "get it" when the scenes shift from the real world to the net and vice versa. There are no explanations to the numerous technical jargons nor are there any explanations as to why there are these spiders floating in the Internet.

It's rare to see an anime take such care with its characters and give us a glimpse into the feelings of each of them. More importantly, they don't seem so one-dimensional. My favorite scene that shows this is the conversation the Major has with Batou after she recovered from getting her brain hacked. There was a vulnerability in her exchanges that made her character much more interesting than the super- soldier persona that she usually portrays.

The story is very typical Ghost in the Shell; an obscure opponent, government conspiracy, and a grand gun battle finale is basically the structure. It's a great formula and it works for this movie as well. The battles were well choreographed and the sniper duel is great (albeit very short). One thing I liked is that the writers decided to exclude long existential conversations that I detested in the first television season. The plot is easy to follow and very much copies the structures of criminal series like CSI or 24. The only problem I see is that it has no introduction to the world the audience will be submerged in so the reasoning of the detectives are difficult to follow.

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex- Solid State Society is an enjoyable movie that maintains the intensity and quality of the TV series. Highly recommended.

As a single feature film, Solid State Society can't hope to be as nuanced as the two TV series that preceded it, nor can it be as philosophic and thoughtful as the other two Ghost in the Shell movies given its more mainstream setting. But what it can do, provide an interesting crime-solving story of a larger proportion than the single episodes of either series, is done well enough.

The movie is set as a sequel to the 2nd Gig TV series, and it is meant to provide some follow-up to stuff that may not have been too clearly wrapped up in the end of that season. The movie shows how the government, Section 9 and the Major herself have dealt with the aftermath of the refugee crisis, which exposed their flaws and limitations. Consistently with the "nothing is perfect" mentality of the TV series, the movie shows us that the events that Section 9 has lived through has left its members changed, maybe even scarred to an extent. All the characters have grown in different directions and, while the movie sets the stage for a "return to normal" for Section 9, it also makes clear that things will never be quite as normal as they used to be.

The story itself deals with a case of a smaller scope than a Stand Alone Complex, which would be near-impossible to tackle effectively in a single film. However, the case of the Solid State Society is trickier and more complicated than the smaller ones of the first or second seasons, so it does manage to set itself as a halfway point between those two types. The story presents complications and twists, and a viewer may get lost because of them; it requires you to pay attention throughout.

As for technical achievements, the movie seems to have enjoyed a high budget, which it uses competently. The animation standard, like in the case of the TV series, remains consistently high. The music is very good and enjoyable throughout it. SSS is truly a joy to watch and listen.

The reason I give it a 9, despite its lack of serious flaws, is because... well, I didn't like it as much as the TV series. It is almost like there is a piece in it that doesn't match here. Are the characters being too emotional? Has Section 9 really changed for the better? Have the characters moved forward or gone back when this story ends? Maybe the answers I have to one (or all) of these questions are what make me lower this rating. I can't put my finger on it, but I have to admit that it is really not that big of a deal. SSS remains one good, enjoyable movie from beginning to end, boasting impressive animation and a solid musical score. If you liked the TV series, give this one a go. You won't regret it.
