This is one of the most overrated anime for me. Even it has good animation, the story has massive amount of flaws. I have nothing against Lelouch or anything, it’s just like I can’t take the lack of explanations how Lelouch do something impossible.
Story: 5/10
The story is good but if you think that this is a complicated anime where you will think and think, for me, I will say that if you want to enjoy this anime, don’t take it seriously. The story about the Geass is very unique, but the problem is they lack to explain all the rules and limitations of Lelouch’s power. When you watch it all along, you will be surprised not because Lelouch did a great tactic rather you will be saying “Oh, he can do that to??. The other problem is this anime is a fast paced one, which is not necessary for this kind of anime. If I site a scene and give its flaw, I don’t think this review will be as short as the normal ones so I will not do it. As for me, I think the creators want to have all the genres in this anime, and I don’t like this fact.
Animation: 10/10
Hands up for this one. All the episodes have not just constant animation but the level of animation is way above in any other normal anime. The fighting scenes between Guren and Lancelot are really the best. Their facial expressions are really drawn very great and that’s what I like the most.
Characters: 6/10
As expected for CLAMP, the character design is really great. All the characters are handsome and beautiful. But the character development was not good. Lelouch can do everything but he has a soft heart which contradicts on what he is doing. They lack the explanation why Lelouch can pilot every single Knightmare he use, be it a new (Gwain) or old ones (first Sutherland he use). As for Suzaku, I was annoyed because his principle is very wrong.
Music: 8/10
All the music is very good and appropriate on each scene. The opening songs are really great; especially the first opening song but I don’t like the second song. The sound effects of the clashing mechs and missiles flying are really realistic, really great.
Overall: 7/10
I watched it 4 times already and it’s just I am not satisfied in the development of the story, or rather I am disappointed in this anime because they have the potential to surpass the greatest animes of all time, but failed. If you are to watch it and have a great expectations to it, just don’t take it seriously and convince yourself that Lelouch can do the impossible.

A very interesting series a bit reminiscent of Death Note. A seemingly normal guy is given a strange and mysterious power, and the world goes crazy from there.
The Good:
The plot was very good. The situations were not as thought out and complex as Death Note, but the whole scene was more strategy than mind games and trying to find out how people think. Lelouch really creates amazing strategies against all odds to fight an oppressive, overpowered empire.
There were some amazing plot twists that I absolutely did not expect at all. The twists were all very interesting, and none of them were stupid or unreasonable as many writers try to add just for the sake of a twist and not for plot.
I like the moral dilemmas that the characters' faced. It really brought out the depths of the characters true personalities. What really packed the punch was that people who on the battle field would have killed each other are living their lives together peacefully when off the battlefield. Some are even good friends.
The Bad:
From the get go, I would have thought that the super-powered prototype which can only be used by the super idealistic good guy was really cliche, but the meaning of the plot around it was amazing and made up for it. For Suzaku and Zero to be battling with each other brings so much meaning and moral dilemma to the series. Is it right to war against an evil empire, or is it better to try to make it better from within? Can you participate in the empire without being tainted by it? etc.
The animation sort of bugged me for the army. The Black Knights' mechas were a whole lot more interesting and well drawn. I guess the army should all have the same machines, but I think that they could have at least two or three different models or so. It seemed to me that the machines driven by Zero and the Black Knights are overpowered also, but the sheer numbers of the Brittainian Army will overpower them with reinforcements if they don't move quickly and precisely so the difference is less of a plot problem.
The only thing that really bugged me about the series was the chess battle with the scale. (Each player puts the captured chess pieces their side of the scale and if the one side goes past the weight limit, the bomb attached either goes off or is diffused.) I just kept thinking, "Why doesn't he just push the scale down with his hand?" It was an interesting idea, but it just seemed so ridiculous that I thought it was laughable.
--------------------------------------------------
Side note: I really feel bad about the second season. I felt like the series could have been finished amazingly in 15 minutes after the last episode, but the second season just changed the plot a lot it seemed and added all the dreaded fan service that just didn't need to be there.
--------------------------------------------------
Overall a very good series. I am not much of a fan of the mecha anime, but I liked the plot to this one a lot. It may not have been sheerly amazing, but it was very enjoyable and very plot filled. I would give it an 8.5 out of 10, but I guess I have to give it an 8/ 10. It doesn't have what it takes to get a 9 in my book, but still quite solid.

Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion is a fantastic show. I was weary of the 'mecha' category attached to it, because I am decidedly NOT a mecha fan. Fortunately, Code Geass relies a lot more on stylish animation, amazing character development, and strategy rather than 'my larger robot can beat your robot.'
Animation: CLAMP did the character design which meant a lot of elongated stick-skinny characters. I'm a big fan of a lot of their work, and also a religious viewer of xxxHolic, so this didn't bother me, but I can see how it could bother some. The fight scenes are all well-choreographed, and the animation stays very clean, although it's nothing spectacular. 8/10
Story: The story relies a lot on character development and that is where Code Geass shines. Unfortunately, it also relies on a lot of standard plot devices. If you're going to use these plot twists to drive your storyline, you have to present them in a different or exceptional way and Code Geass doesn't reach its full potential in this area. The ending is actually the worst episode of the series, which doesn’t exemplify good story-telling. The story is at its best when we are inside Lelouch/Zero's head, whether he is planning and scheming a way to conceal his double life at school, or commanding the Black Knights from inside his Knightmare Frame. These well-written strategy parts immerse the viewer in the story. For someone like me, who isn't a fan of mecha, Lelouch's scheming was a great way to include the viewer in all of the battle scenes. 6/10
Characters: Lelouch is an intriguing character. Often compared to Light Yagami from Death Note, he too is presented with a magical solution to change his life and the world. Lelouch is far easier to relate to than Light and I think it's important to see the differences in his character to fully appreciate the series. Unlike Light, who wants to change the world in his image to become a god-like figure, Lelouch is far more down to earth. He wants to avenge the death of his mother, and create a world where his sister feels safe, using the Black Knights much like he uses any other chesspiece on a chessboard. Lelouch still cares about many people who are close to him, and as his double life and the geass power begins to take its toll, we are privy to see his slow realization that his actions have consequences that even the most brilliant strategist cannot predict.
The opposing character to Lelouch is his childhood friend Suzaku. Suzaku’s aim is to raise his status and change his world through hard work and integrity. Even when the system turns on him, and Lelouch as Zero presents him with an escape, Suzaku sticks to his morals and sees his situation through honorably. The remaining cast is decidedly static and present various anime stereotypes, romantic, mecha, and otherwise. The Black Knight /student Kallen is the only other character who is flushed out at all. This works to Code Geass’s advantage sometimes, since it’s Lelouch and Suzaku’s struggles that the series focuses on. 8/10
Music: I loved COLORS’s song FLOW, although I agree with the previous poster that it doesn’t fit the series all that well. The background music is good, nothing exceptional, and all other opening and ending songs fit the series well despite the fact that none of them really stuck with me. 7/10
Overall: For me, Code Geass is a solid seven out of ten. There are points where everything clicks and the series really shines; however, there are other points where forgiveable mistakes are all the more annoying when compared to what the series could have been. 7/10

This anime is nothing short of epic. It has everything that one looks for in an excellent show regardless of the medium: Breathtaking story, memorable characters, shocking twists, etc. Anything less than 10/10 will not do the anime justice.
My favorite part of the anime is how well the story is told and how each event has repercussions that is felt by all characters. From the desire of finding his mother's killer and the granting of the Geass by C.C., Lelouch starts a chain of events that would encompass nations in a bloody battle. I especially enjoyed the splendid military strategies that the anime painfully set out and executed. The ruthlessness of some of the strategies is also quite refreshing. It is great to watch Lelouch use to his liking any tactic that serves his purpose without any regard. But Code Geass isn't immoral like School Days because he is held accountable and is not allowed to escape judgment. This accountability is where the theme of forgiveness is introduced, and superbly counter-balances the theme of vengeance that Lelouch handles with aplomb.
This show would never be possible if Lelouch is anything short of Machiavelli's prince reincarnated. He is wonderfully portrayed and his dialogues are excellently written. His actions are devious and fit his character. Most important of all is that he is unpredictable. It is so refreshing to watch an anime where I can finally feel genuinely shocked from what Lelouch is capable of perpetrating.
It's not to say this anime didn't have blemishes. The weird movements used for all of Lelouch’s proclamations look silly and reminds me of Tamaki Suoh from Ouran High School Host Club. Some of the tactics Lelouch thought up seems more like a miracle concocted by writers that can't think up anything smart. For example: in the climactic battle of the Tokyo settlement Lelouch resorts to sinking the whole city. The problem is that the audience is not given prior knowledge that such an absurd mechanism existed. It seems the writers just pulled it out of nowhere and had a weak excuse for its existence.
Ultimately, the blemishes are minor enough to be negligible. With an excellent story and cast there is nothing significant that warrants lowering the score from 10/10.

Code Geass, the dark horse of the productions of year 2006, a series in which I initially didn’t intend to watch, as I was expecting it to be just another mecha produced by Sunrise to accommodate the fact that there was no Gundam for that year. Even the first episode had that trademark protagonist stumbled into scene while enemy was stealing weapons storyline. Thankfully, it turned out that I was gravely mistaken. Code Geass turned out to more than just a mecha series.
Story/Dev: 90%
The plot isn’t anything special, nothing really unique either. It is essentially a rather typical storyline about a discarded Prince who seeks revenge. A storyline rather common in Shakespearian plays revolving round conflicts among the Royals. Then again, the theme of revenge has always been a delicious storyline, popular among many and for many ages. So, how is it that a series consisting of so many generic storylines is able to become one of the most phenomenal series of the recent years? All I can say is that Sunrise played its cards really well in the production of Code Geass.
What is so special, and thus made it deserve a high rating, is how the story develops. And it is how it progresses that makee the overall storyline complex and so engaging. The concept of the Geass itself is also rather fresh. I have to compliment the production team for their analogies and references to Celtic myth. Also, I have always loved the symbolism of Chess, however mild or insignificant it is, that is being portrayed in anime, and CG had lots of them. They certainly have done a splendid job in the scripting of this series.
Characters/Dev: 95%
The characters’ development is the strong point of this series. Indeed, Lelouch is certainly not the generic clear-cut good guy. And yet, branding him a “villain" doesn’t really fit the bill either. As far as anti-hero archetype goes, it does seem like Yagami Light is the closest in comparison. But of course, on a deeper level, Lelouch is a much, much more complex character than Light, which is understandable considering the nature of the series’ stories. In addition, even the antagonist Suzaku is more than what he seems to be, and I certainly cannot simply classify him under the archetypal justice-upholding Hero. Because, similar to Lelouch, his personality is much darker and much more complex than that. The side cast, on the other hand, is the generic make-up (At the base of it all, this is Sunrise after all). Yup, you have the Princess, the klutzy girl, the scientist, etc. Though I have to say that Lloyd made a rather deep impression because I found him to be a very hilarious character and I laughed at his awesome one-liners and nutty archetypical scientist personality. Of the friends/enemies duality concept, I’ve heard of complaints about how it is just ripping off from Gundam Seed. However, I have to say that Code Geass has taken the relationship duality to an even deeper (and more realistic) level, making this aspect to be even more intriguing than that of Seed’s.
The roles are also changed in this series. In most mecha, the protagonists are usually the ones piloting the mecha and fighting in the frontline. Lelouch, on the other hand, plays the role of one who leads and plans the battles. In short, the protagonist of Code Geass is the leader and strategist, rather than just the soldier. But on the other end of the spectrum, the viewers can’t help but question if, by the end of it, Lelouch is really the “King" controlling the scene or the “Pawn" being played on by the Emperor. Or that they are essentially the same since the “King" is but another chess piece on the chessboard, and that Lelouch can never escape from the Emperor’s control no matter what he attempts to do.
Of the voice-acting cast, I dare say that Jun Fukuyama has pretty much stolen the show. His role as the voice of Lelouch was definitely nothing short of terrific in how he managed to bring out the arrogance of Lelouch. Really, Jun sounded so different from when he voiced for his other notable roles (eg Watanuki from xxxHOLiC) that I initially didn’t realize it was actually him.
Animation/Graphics/Design: 95%
Since character designs are done by CLAMP, I just have to give this section high score simply because I’m a fan of CLAMP’s art styles. CG boasts beautiful character designs and fantastic animation quality. Lelouch’s emotions, particularly his facial expressions, are all very accurately and realistically shown. The only complaint is that the character design for Suzaku is a freakin’ Syaoran. Why, CLAMP? Do they really *have* to throw in a Syaoran for almost everything they draw? As for the mecha, I don’t have much to say. After all, it is the usual Sunrise style and all.
Music: 93%
The music is fantastic too! The first OP, while no doubt good, is not really fitting for this anime: the mood of the song is too “happy" for a series such as Code Geass. I disliked OP2 though. OP3 was also good, though it resembled too much to a Gundam-ish sort of OP. BGMs used are really well chosen. I like generally all of the EDs. Personally loved the Inserts by Hitomi.
Summary:
At this point of time, I doubt I’ll need to recommend this series: it’s already too well known. Now off to my review for Code Geass R2 in order to truly finish my review for Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion!
Personal Overall Rating: 90%

This review is based after watching both seasons
OK. I'll start this review by saying that Code Geass is one heck of an anime.
There are two main points that I base my ratings on, the Plot and the development of the Characters. Code Geass certainly has a great plot and a great set of characters. As long as these points satisfy me I don't really care much about the animation and music. Although they are good, too.
I was so happy that I waited for the whole series to finish before starting to watch it because I couldn't bear to wait a week to see the next episode. I felt many emotions during the whole series. Sadness, laughter, anger, fear, shock, thrill. It was unpredictable. Just when I thought that I know what will happen next, I would be wrong. I didn't even know what side to choose because one side's objective will change suddenly.
Although Code Geass did have some similarities with Death Note, what made it different for me is that Code Geass had an ending that I liked. I also liked how sometimes there are happy moods in Code Geass. Whereas in Death Note, it's mostly dark moods that I felt.
The character developments were astounding. There are many characters that changed through out the whole season. Most animes only develop the protagonist and antagonist but many of the characters in Code Geass changed. Sometimes I did not know who was going for the right path. I was rooting for a character to win then all of a sudden his true objective was shown and I hated him for that.
Overall, Code Geass is a perfect anime for me. I thought that the writers of Code Geass had balls because they killed such important characters. I liked it.

Code Geass is definitely one of the best series I have seen.
The best ever? Well no I wouldn't say that, there are still a few rough edges and as has been mentioned before it doesn't feel like the people who were making it actually expected it to be this popular.
Why did it become so popular nonetheless? Code Geass is a show that almost forces you to watch again because almost every episode ends with a cliffhanger
I'm writing this after seeing season 2 so I can say most of the answers are actually answered in the end, but even at the end there is still one question that lingers.
Code Geass definitely has similarities with Death Note. But where most who mention that seem to enjoy Death Note more I have to say I think Code Geass is better.
Code Geass is less cerebral and has more action. But the big difference I think is really Lelouch himself. And personally he is also what won me over apart from Death Note's anti-climatic ending.
Lelouch actually has doubts sometimes. He obviously doesn't show them to often so it doesn't get all mushy but just enough that it is credible for him to continue and so you also know why he is doing the things he does.
This makes him a lot more human and makes it so you actually want him to succeed because you sympathize with him.
In the end I chose to give Code Geass a 9,5
The plot gets a 10 from me. With all the cliffhangers, it's obvious the story is sometimes nearing the fine line of becoming unbelievable, especially in season two. There was one point where I had to raise an eyebrow at the pace some things went, but in the end that is the strength of Code Geass, as it always keeps you at the tip of your seat, never really knowing what will happen next and always leading to great confrontations
The characters are part of the rough edges I mentioned. It's quite obvious all characters are really there to make the story around Lelouch possible. Only a few changes are really noticable in the other characters. Obviously this has also, in large part, due to the incredible speed the series moves on so it isn't just a rough edge; it is also a choice. One that made in my opinion Code Geass the success that it is. It is one of those things where usually it fails miserably and everyone forgets it because the end couldn't keep up with the highspeed start, but if it does succeed you have a jewel worth watching a few times again just to check what you missed the first time. Still I only give a 9 here because even though it was a choice that went great with the show, it is definitely something I missed sometimes.
The music I felt was great. It was nothing too extravagant and added to he overall feel. Now, I'm not really someone who looks at music in the first place unless it bothers me, so I'm not going to give a number here, but I liked it and felt it added to the scenes shown. That, in my eyes, is what makes good anime music.
The artwork is definitely a big plus. I love the style used and also how it was all put together. The mecha'sand faces of the characters were always shifted in such a way you never had many doubts who was piloting what mecha. Also the mechas had a lot of variation and grandeur.
In the end I would like to give it a 9.5. It is the greatest show I have seen in ages, but at some points you can still feel the balance weighing and wonder if a little more of this or that wouldn't have made it even better.
Now I can't vote 9,5 so having to chose between a 9 and a 10 I chose a 10 seeing as I'm definitely not holding out on such a great show.

Code Geass is a mecha that revolves around the main character, Lelouch, and his struggle to change the world. Lelouch obtains a power, a strong power able to aid Lelouch in taking down an empire.
The characters don’t really develop aside from Lelouch and Suzaku. Lelouch starts on the inside and ends up outside of the system as he tries to take down an Empire in which he was once royalty. Suzaku starts on the outside and finds his way on the inside as he holds his ideals to change the world from within the system. Lelouch develops through the story by learning how to distinguish chess from real battle. He comes to a realization about the consequences that accompany his actions and that somebody has to bear the weight of the all the evil it takes to make the world right. Suzaku follows his own ideals that the world must be changed from the inside. He develops a sense of all of the barriers and hurdles that are set up to keep the system intact. All of the other characters have no real character development and are there for support of the development of Lelouch and Suzaku.
The character animations are beautiful, while the mecha fights also have their own animated flare. The OPs are very upbeat J-Pop while the background music adds quality to the episodes.
The only problem I have with this anime are the few questions left unanswered by the end of the series. The whole series ends on a big cliffhanger, but there are also mysteries in which the story didn’t reveal enough about, like the history and C.C., the mysterious woman who granted Lelouch and the others' powers. Also, the mystery that Lelouch tries to solve throughout the whole series gets little development. These mysteries that remain untouched and unanswered take away from Code Geass’ ability to stand alone as a series.
Besides the unanswered questions that develop throughout series, Code Geass is a really good anime. It manages to stay compelling while depicting the Lelouch making tough decisions in order to change the world. The suspense always seems to be present within this anime. I recommend this series to anyone who enjoys mecha animes and to anyone who likes animes that make you think and keep you on the edge of your seat. If you remotely enjoy this series, you will have no problem enjoying Code Geass R2, which also keeps the story captivating and suspenseful. 9/10.

An important thing before you watch Code Geass: If you just started watching anime or just started watching mecha/military, you should watch the series twice to get it.
Why am I giving a full 10 stars? Because this anime is a very complicated anime that actually makes you think after watching it. Unlike animes like El Cazador, or even Mai-Hime, you just watch and finish it. The entire thing just plays before you and stops at the end of the episode and continues the cycle until the season's over. But for Code Geass, you have this mental battle to pause the movie to think about everything or continue watching it because of the suspense. But not only the plot attracts you, the art is unique. Code Geass is a rare and hard to come by anime - an equal scale of both excellent plot and excellent art.
The music... I loved the first and second opening themes, but the third.. Let's just say not as much as the first two. I was perfectly satisfied the ending themes. The music the inside the episodes clearly named what'll happen next, which is good, since that's why they put it there.
Overall, I think Code Geass is a really good anime to watch on those days when you have nothing to do.

I can see why Code Geass got so popular, but at the same time, I can understand why anyone would give it a low score.
Mid-way through the series, I began to feel strongly that Code Geass is simply Death Note + Gundam Seed. After reading other reviews it seems that a lot of people feel it like me too. Code Geass, like Death Note, is a lot about the protagonist with a secret weapon trying to change the world under an alias, with violence. The difference is that Code Geass has a mecha which promised action and girls which promised fan service, and Death Note delivers more cruel killings and actually has a deep plot.
Code Geass does not have a deep plot. It relies on too many coincidence for the plot twist, and Lelouch has too many close shaves. And a character's death, which is probably caused by Lelouch’s incredibly good or incredibly bad luck... those chances for it to happen are hard to believe. The reason for that death is so incredibly lame that I still cannot accept it. And what are the chances of him getting that overpowered Knightmare? The only parts which Code Geass is in-depth are mainly Lelouch’s strategies. The plot does not go much further than that.
Overlooks that, one can’t deny that Code Geass is enjoyable, SUNRISE style. They know what the audience wants, and they deliver, although some of it kind of gets old if you’ve watch a number of SUNRISE productions. Clumsy tsundere girl, talkative suggestive bold girl, shy girl in love, etc.
I don’t really think they planned for it to be such a success though, as I don’t think they used best choice voice actors or opening ending themes. The animation remained pretty good for the studio’s standard, but I thought all of the songs isn’t any good except for ED2, "Mosiac Kakera". I would admit that "Colours" by FLOW is a good song, but it wasn’t a fitting song for Code Geass.
But in the end, it’s still a enjoyable show. I guess I’m just a little upset with the way the plot plays out.

I absolutely love this anime, it really brings out the real me. While watching this, you'll seem bipolar...you'll laugh then cry and then get angry and cry again. Please, ignore all the comments saying how it just follows the negative path of all the other mecha/ninja anime's...It really flies high above them all.
The plot was something that I could settle with and understand completely. Though the pace of the show is pretty fast, your pulled along at the edge of your seat waiting for the seconds to go by quicker so you can find out what happens next.
The art design was beautiful. The characters eye's sparkled, the sunsets had beautiful reds and pinks, and the nicely made Knightmares was something to see(or watch?)
My review on Code Geass can't fully explain how good it was. All I can really say now is that watching it would be the best thing to do.

Re-review? Alright, as my prior review on this series (after 23 episodes) did somewhat jump on the praise bandwagon. While my final thoughts on what is season one of a potential uber-franchise were nowhere near my initial, much should be said about how the creators of CG managed to create a decently original and, at times, outstanding mecha anime series. But because of it's "expository" nature and the absence of all logic near the end, it hardly deserves to be mentioned in the pantheon of anime, as again, there are better shows out there that understands how to close a chapter of a larger epic.
Compared to previous Sunrise produced anime, most notably the Gundam Seed/Seed Destiny series, there are more than just a few parallels. But because this is a review of season one and season one only, to compare the two franchises using both seasons would be unfair. Seed and Seed Destiny, however, fell completely into the trite, taking absolutely no chances with its main characters and settings. It settled, apparently, for what each side of the fanboys wanted, resulting in a mess that's tied primarily to the marketability of the characters. With that, the action and drama of one CG season already far surpassed its cousin, although it liberally borrows and remixes many of the characters and plot.
But what characters they are. Many people compare Lelouch to the fan favorite, Yagami Light, due to their ruthless methods to achieve their goals, and there is some credibility in that. However, there is a key difference, and that difference is what makes Lelouch, perhaps, superior to Light; a conscience. It is that conscience that makes CG much more fun to watch, and this show is completely carried by his character, as compared to Death Note, which had the perfect foil to Light in L for assistance in the characters category. In many ways, CG is the franchise that it is today because of LL. Unfortunately, as time went on in the show, less and less attention was being paid to character interactions, and the ending settled for a dramatic, cliched, and illogical standoff.
But that's just one character of the many that drives the plot, and each play their roles well. Up until episode 23, the development of each was nearly flawless, with even seemingly cliched caricatures breaking out of their GSeed mold and bringing new ideas to the table. Countless goons that follow a mask and his ideas more than what's actually behind it, shades of Char. A regicidal self-righteous hypocrite; shades of Kira/Heero/Amuro. A king that sees his children as toys to an unknown plot; shades of... hah, let's not kid ourselves, way too many of these to count. But each are remixed enough to seem new, and the degrees of hate people on message boards harbor for each shows how well it worked. Definitely cool stuff, but it all comes up empty. Once we got past episode 23, it all delved into the most typical type of showdown, ending on a whimper rather than a roar. To leave the audience with a collective "huh?" is never a good way to tell a story, and that is exactly what CG did.
The production qualities of the series and its presentation is nothing short of astounding, staying consistent throughout the series. And yes, although it did become a "New Robot of the Week" thing by the end, the designs of each were very sharp, distinguishing themselves from each other and from their Gundam cousins. Sound and music were also top-notch, with Lelouch and most of the voice actors for the Black Knights being a step above the typical. Lelouch's finger gesture poses also provided much of the humor in the series, and when combined with the vocal-tone shifts typical of said finger pointing, further bolsters his place as one of the more interesting and watchable characters around.
Mind you, much of these complaints are aimed primarily at the first season, and if I had the power to review season two at this time and include what happens in there into this, perhaps it would score higher. But this is a review for season one, not the collected CG works, and standing alone, CG was somewhat of a failure. Tight, well-knit storyline with sharply crafted characters in a believable setting; it had no reason to fail. In some ways, it's impossible to rate this show on its own; it's more "Lost" than "24," to use American shows as a rubric, and taking each season by itself will always lead to confused questions and questionable content.
Even with the complaints, CG is an outstanding anime. The story of one man against an empire never grows old if told well, and CG has an amazing hook in the form of its lead character. To anticipate his plans and seeing them succeed is gratifying in a way unique in anime. Had there not been the misstep of the conclusion, this would have been an easy 10/10, but because there is a second season, and because the first 23 episodes did happen, it's a forgivable offense. Code Geass is not to be missed, and it is well worthy of its franchise status.

Noteworthy is the series’ creative take on "Knightmare Frames"; most Frames are notably smaller than other anime bots and the possession of wheels/ rollerblades underneath their legs, both aspects underlie a greater emphasis on speed and make the swiftness of these machinations much more believable. And despite initial robot designs that seem crude and primitive, later versions are real eye-candy for audiences (particular the Lancelot) and further serve to advance the already high enjoyable of Code Geass’ mecha fight scenes. That along with superb "epic like" music and appealing character designs by CLAMP makes Code Geass highly enjoyable.
But Code Geass’ high quality also makes its flaws much more noticeable. The race issue between Britannians and "Elevens" is repetitively shallowly executed, resulting in despicably crappy dialog. Some plot events transcend the believability of even anime, such as Lelouch accidentally releasing the Geass on Princess Euphie and causing the massacre of countless Japanese. At times, the story strays off course, concentrating on less important, immature events like a school fair or Lelouch having his Zero helmet stolen by a cat. And as most cliffhanger endings do, they leave the audience feeling cheated and deceived.
The biggest problem with the series is its overabundance of characters and its failure to properly develop most of them. Diethard seems like an obsessive maniac with an unbelievable motive to back Zero. Nina is a stupid nerdy girl with a crush on Euphie and acts horribly erratically in the finale because of the princess’ death. Mao’s character development barely suffices, characterizing him as a childish maniac rather than a convincing villain. And despite Kallen’s importance to the story, her past isn’t developed beyond the mention that brother died resisting the Britannian regime. Our main villain, the emperor of Britannia, is only characterized by his "survival of the fittest and no equality" dialog. And we really don’t know much about C.C. either. Other than Lelouch, only Suzaku Kururugi is well adapted, serving as juxtaposition against Zero, while still a hypocrite in his disapproval of Zero’s actions.
Alternatively, while the anime fails to adequately portray its secondary characters, a superb job is done on Lelouch. The series’ most enjoyable moments are a result of depicting Lelouch’s intellect, that manage to deftly surprise the audience. What Code Geass does best is characterizing Lelouch throughout the series; his grief and strive to win at all costs. Deception is a key trait of Lelouch that is well- illustrated; his need to hide his identity from the Black Knights, his orchestration of the "suicide" of the Japanese resistance leaders. Lelouch’s unorthodox methods have in turn isolated him; even from the ones he loves and cares about most.
Consequently, he believes himself as a person beyond redemption. As Lelouch himself put it:
"I cannot marry a goddess because I have sold my soul to the devil."
And because of the deft characterization of Lelouch, this anime undeniably excites and thoroughly entertains its audience, making Code Geass one of greatest conceptions of modern day anime.

Code Geass was very willing, and incredibly able, to create a loathing among its viewers for the British Empire, which ruled the developed world. I recently came to hear that this would have been an alternate reality for the present day had the yanks not liberated themselves years ago... who knows eh... but that is another topic altogether.
Characters: 8/10
The characters didn't really see much change or growth bar Lelouch, tho I personally feel he was born to be a rebel leader. The sub characters all play small to mid range parts generally revolving around the school and Lelouch's private life outside of the main plot. These characters also allow the series to take itself a little less seriously by throwing in your basic comedy elements.
Story: 9/10
As stated above there are school scenes, some of which can fill entire episodes... These school times are in my opinion added to stop the anime from becoming too overbearing. Nonetheless they came to be slightly distracting during the latter part of the series where the story became incredibly compelling. Apart from that, the story was amazing. Before the first episode is complete you will be seething with the hatred Lelouch harbors for the British empire, and by the half way mark in the series, you will be cheering the rebellion on. Without stating why I liked it, the final few episodes of this first season were breath-taking and although easy to see coming, were still astounding to watch (except for whatshisface in the spikey ball spaceship ~_~ ).
Music: 9/10
The music wasn't memorable at all really... but whilst watching this, I remember the music setting the scene quite well.
Overall: 9/10
An anime that doesn't take itself overly seriously, but does have a main character that does. Simply put, this was great to watch, had an engrossing story, with a slightly hasty ending. Watch this before R2 finishes airing, and join the multitude of fans dying to watch Lelouch take on the world to save Japan.

This was just a must watch after reading all the critical acclaim and praises of this show.
Story: 10/10
This was just an amazing story. In an alternate world the empire of Britannia is a world power, they then invaded and conquered Japan and named it Area 11. The Japanese were all called Elevens and were basically looked down and mistreated by the victorious Britannians. Lelouch Lamperouge, a Britannian, did not like what the empire was doing with Japan. One day he receives the power of the Geass which enabled him to give one absolute command to any one and they are forced to follow that command, he then goes on a crusade to topple the empire. Everything about the story was excellent with the right balance of pacing, comedy episodes here and there, plot twists and action. I was sucked into the story from the beginning. The only negative that I can think of is that gut punch of an episode near the end when it just seemed to convenient that Lelouch's Geass goes off at the worst possible time, it was such a pain to watch the events that followed.
Characters: 10/10
The show had the perfect cast of characters. Lelouch is the undoubted star of the show. He is like Light Yagami in such a way that he ain't your run of the mill protagonist. He is the perfectly balanced anti hero, he has a dark side but at the same time he still has qualities that save his humanity. I also liked C.C. because she was just so cute especially when she wears other outfits and when she hugs that stuff toy. Kallen is another good character, strong willed, brave and did I mention that she's hot? The only character that I didn't like was Suzaku and I know that I'm not alone here. I really HATED his guts, I hoped that he would die, that Lelouch would just leave him to die but alas I did not get my wish.
Animation/Art: 10/10
The character designs are amazing and excellent, they were designed by a some group named Clamp after all. From the pretty boys and beautiful women to the mechs everything just looked great. The battle scenes were also nice and filled with great action.
Music/Sound: 9/10
I liked the opening theme Flow, I think it suited the show. The background music was great as well, it helped make scenes dramatic and epic when they needed to be. All of the characters sounded great as well.
Overall it was just a great show to watch. The story and characters are its strongest points, you are forced to watch just to know what is going to happen next. It's so refreshing to see a show that lives up to all its hype. This is now among my favorite shows, its a must watch.

Story: 10/10
The story of a vengeful man trying to topple his father's empire and nothing will stand in his way. Lelouch, given the power of Geass by a mysterious woman, is able to manipulate the human mind to achieve his goal.
This story has many twists and intriguing subplots that will make you get hook to the show. I started downloading it after all 23 episodes had been released and watched all of them within 4 days, on top of some other shows I was watching. I can't seem to get enough of the story, cliffhangers and the context behind every event.
Characters: 10/10
Excellent design and elaboration of individuals. The main protagonists of the show have such enthralling personalities that captivate my entire attention throughout the show.
Graphics: 10/10
A work of art. This anime has well designed mechas and humans. CLAMP has done it again. Now with Sunrise (Gundam SEED), a combination not to be trifle with.
Music: 10/10
I love the 1st opening, 'Colors' by Flow and the 2nd Ending 'Mosaic Kakera' by sunset swish as they match the show well. The music add ons behind every scenario in the show is also well done and changes accordingly to the mood of the show.
Overall: 10/10
Haha. I would give more than a 10/10 if possible. This is one show not to be missed. A must watch! A+++

This show definitely caught my attention when it came out in 2006. I really liked how Sunrise sucked you right in within the first 10 minutes or so, when they showed the viewer a little of the history of Code Geass' world/history. But it didn't end there...
Story
Very well constructed and imaginative. I've seen plenty of anime where it's a parallel/alternate universe and I thought 'how unoriginal.' Not so with Code Geass! Rather than have the main character as a well-defined hero, we instead have a 'anti-hero' of sorts. Lelouch had some great intentions, but he was so determined to achieve his ends, he's willing to sacrifice everything to meet them. In a way, Death Note's and Code Geass's main character share much in common. I won't spoil it for you, but near the end when Lelouch 'unwittingly' uses his power on someone he cares for, things started to get interesting. The plots and sub-plots, along with the feints and counter-feints of LeLouch made for an extremely entertaining watch and was perhaps the main reason why I found it so addictive.
Characters
Every character has some sort of interesting back-story and I particularly was impressed at how each character's motivation was regarding the rebellion as a whole. It was fantastic to see Lelouch develop over the course of the story and in many other shows, this would have remained the ONLY focus. This fortunately wasn't the case with Code Geass and you start to see changes in nearly all the characters right until the very end. Excellent character development.
Animation
What made this really stand-out, was the really colorful and vivid designs of the traditional clothing. It reflected much on the feeling that the world was run by an european empire that had existed unchallenged for centuries. As expected from CLAMP, the character designs were lovely and I can appreciate how Sunrise didn't lose this when the show went into production. For lack of a better word, Code Geass was just gorgeous!
Music
The score didn't seem out of place and really added to the general tone in the series. The OPs and EDs weren't bad either.
Summary
This show was just plain addictive. It has some beautifully drawn characters with good history and personality, as well as a story which left you guessing right to the end. The one criticism I have about this show, was the huge gap between episodes 22 and 23-24. It was horrid waiting all that time for some sort of closure. In the end, I was left with a truly shocking development... a cliffhanger where here is more Code Geass to come!
It's been years since I've waited this much for a 2nd season of a show. April 6th 2008 couldn't come any sooner!

Code Geass is probably one of the most exciting and addictive anime I have ever seen.
Story (10/10): The story of Code Geass is about a youth seeking revenge for his past and security for his future using a power known as Geass, which allows him to force anyone to carry out any task he wishes, and his alter ego Zero, which allows him to create his own group of resistance fighters known as the Black Knights. I was immediately drawn into this story, as the writers do a great job of setting up the plot while simultaneously implementing fast-paced action. The story consistently keeps viewers interested with plot twists, mystery, and great cliffhangers. Unlike other series with war in them, no battle in Code Geass is useless or simply there to fill time, as each helps move the plot in a significant way. But the two best elements of the story are... 1) Lelouch, Suzaku, and Kallen at school as they try to balance their privileged lives with their more substantial roles in the world. 2) Instead of just main character & co. v.s. evil empire, we have a conflicting main character whose actions are both good and evil, and a good-guy antagonist whose beliefs cause him to fight for the evil empire. Throw in sympathetic and interesting characters on both sides of the line, and you have one of the greatest anime stories of all time...so far (this plot leaves viewers dying for season 2).
Characters (10/10): Virtually every character in this series is great in their own way. Even Suzaku, who is sometimes painfully naive, is an incredibly admirable character with an honorable philosophy. But the greatest characters in this show are Lelouch and Kallen. What makes Lelouch so great is that in spite of any evil action he may take, he remains a likable character with well-meaning goals. Many compare him to Yagami Light of Death Note. But unlike Light, Lelouch is more sympathetic. Despite some of his dark consequences, Lelouch comes off as someone legitimately wanting a better world, and not really wanting any glory for himself (he just wants to live in a peaceful world with his sister, where he doesn't have to worry about his name). While I love the fact that he is a genius who can concoct great strategies in battle and in life (I love his chess skills of using the King as an attacking piece), I also love the fact that he is not perfect as he has his shares of miscalculations and failures. It is also a nice change-up to have the main character being the primary political force in a mecha, instead of the top mecha pilot. In the end Lelouch amounts to a great character and driving force for this anime, which is why he is my third favorite character of all time. Kallen is another one of my favorites as she is not only a great mecha pilot, but she is also interesting to watch as she switches between being a passive and sickly student to a rambunctious and determined ace pilot for a resistance. Kallen ends up as a less conflicting rival for Suzaku because she has no ulterior motive, wanting only for the Japanese to be free from Britannian control and exploitation. The rest of the cast is well rounded from the mysterious CC, the devious Schniezel and Britannian King (for those who argue that Lelouch is a villain and forget that Britannia has its share of far nastier characters), and the loser Jeremiah (aka Orange-Kun, one of the best names around). Ougi is another notable character who is also very provocative as a kind, honest, and generally good-natured man who runs a terrorist group.
Animation (9/10): Amazingly this is a Sunrise production that does not constantly recycle its animation (maybe it does a little, but if so it is hardly noticeable compared to other Sunrise works). Because this is CLAMP the animation is of course great. Lelouch was designed perfectly as the charismatic, cool genius that most can appreciate. The other character designs are great, and I felt somewhat unique for CLAMP, in a good way (though some characters like Suzaku are CLAMP cliché designs). The mecha in the anime, called KnightMare Frames, have the appearance of overgrown armored knights and are very fitting for a series where the world is more advanced than modern day, yet the society of Britannia (and especially their government) reflects Britain and France of old with nobility and knighthood. The background scenery is also good throughout the series, though nothing is done to make it stand out. One final note is that Code Geass may be the only anime to pull off having a tyrant wearing a colonial, curly-hair white wig in a technologically advanced world (the royal garbs, are also good, sure, but the wig was a gutsy move, but it worked).
Music (9/10): The first OP and ED and the third OP are great. The second OP is an acquired taste that definitely grew on me. The second ED on the other hand flat-out sucks and kills the mood. Music within the anime is also great and lends to the excitement. The music during the more peaceful moments at Lelouch's school, and at other times, has a rich classical taste to it, especially with the excellent use of the violin. The sound is very good and always on cue.
Entertainment (10/10): Code Geass had me hooked almost immediately. There are times, especially at the very beginning and end of the first season, when the action feels fast-paced and nonstop. Yet within all this action there is still a great story, with interesting subplots, that unfolds. The battles between the Guren and Lancelot stand atop the anime mecha-fighting world. Lelouch's strategies in battle are amazing and played out well. Even the comedic moments are not ridiculous and contain the kind of slap-stick comedy you would fear from Sunrise. There are a couple of weak episodes that are clearly filler, which is somewhat aggravating given the fact that fans had to wait a long time for the last two episodes of season one. Also, the product placement (Pizza Hut) was kind of funny at first, but then you realize that Sunrise has finally crossed that bridge and is actually peddling products within anime (it's a little disturbing). Still, this is one of those anime where I check online constantly to see when the new episode is released.
Mystery, action, one of the best and most unique war plotlines since Zeta Gundam, and throw in a great (albeit somewhat cliché) cliffhanger at the end of season one, and Code Geass is a great anime that leaves fans begging for season two. It is actually hard to say what direction this anime will head, and I have no idea how it will end, but one thing is for sure, season one was a great success. This is one of my top 10 anime of all time, with Lelouch being my third favorite anime character of all time. I could see many people not being huge fans of Code Geass, especially those who do not like dark anime with a controversial main character. But, I would recommend giving this title a chance. Overall (9.6/10).

Posted by : Tomato-kun Posted on : 2008-02-27
First off, I would like to start by noting that this anime is pretty dark, and by dark, I mean it takes you through a rollercoaster of emotions where it can raise your mood, and on the same whim, destroy it with a quick twist in the plot (see Elfen Lied and maybe even Mai Hime). Also along the same notes, Code Geass explores the more negative aspects of humankind, including aspects such as lying, vengeance, hypocrisy, and prejudice. It's also important to understand that this anime is mainly more of a drama with mechas, the classic school setting, and abnormally thin CLAMP-designed characters on the surface.
Plot: Going into specifics, Code Geass' strengths are in its story and characters. For starters, it barely has any fillers (and I detest fillers), and instead focuses on the growth of a small resistance into a full-scale rebellion. More importantly, the main characters that are involved on both side of this war between the Brittanian Empire and the Japanese rebellion. You can read the synopsis or other reviews to get the synopsis, but it's basically about Lelouch Lamperouge, who gains the ability of mind control (through his eye) -- he then uses that power for his own personal vendetta against the Brittanian Empire. On the other side of the spectrum, Lelouch's childhood friend, Suzaku Kururugi fights for the Brittanian Empire (the very empire that invaded his country) as its ace mecha pilot in order to change it from within.
Characters: The characters are magnificently developed — and I mean they are actually developed. For comparison's sake, let's look at another contemporary, Death Note, another dark anime whose plot is well executed. The problem was that Death Note's characters never really evolve past their initial presentation. However, in Code Geass, Lelouch, the anti-hero, goes through extreme events that test the very core of his personality and humanity. As a result, he begins to change (for worse, or better?), but the outcome of his change and decisions adversely affect other characters. We won't know the ultimate outcome until the series is actually finished yet though. Likewise, Suzaku's core beliefs (as I mentioned before) are tested, and he begins to understand what he's really fighting for and why. Although the side characters aren't as nearly developed, they change as well, mainly in how they cope with their prejudices against the other side.
Animation and Music: Not surprisingly, considering the consistency of the anime, the animation and music are also above par. Although I was skeptical of how CLAMP characters would fit in a mecha anime, I didn't give it a second thought after I started watching. As for the music, it gives off of an ambiance that perfectly matches the flow of the story. Slow, graceful music during the sad parts, and happy music during the eyes of the storm. The OP and ED themes are catchy (especially the first OP and ED, Colors and Yuukyou Seishunka), and the frequent insert songs are very appropriate. Personally, I find myself listening to the OPs, EDs, and insert songs long after I finished the series.
Bottom Line: If you don't mind the darker setting of Code Geass, by all means watch it. And enjoy it. The deep story and characters, along with stunning visuals and music, will keep you hooked. The only downside is that much still needs to be wrapped up. But of course, that's why there's a sequel. So here's hoping that the second season doesn't decline in quality or disappoint, because it sure has a hell of a lot to live up to.

Code Geass is by far one of the best anime I’ve ever seen. I might even argue it to be the best.
So what exactly makes it extraordinary?
To me I was simply addicted after watching the first episode. Every aspect of the anime is woven together into a grand masterpiece. The characters are deeply and constantly involved with one another in someway that you will never find a dull moment in Code Geass. All of it is somehow intertwine and evolve with Lelouch and his ultimate goal in some way.
That being said, the story is also focus around the path Lelouch chooses. Some to be successful, while others he would eventually regret later on. Therefore it really creates some intense and dramatic moments throughout the anime.
The visual and sound track is also very good. It might not be rewrite the standards for epic anime, but it dose deliver a very good job of it. The characters shows well detailed expressions and the mech battles dose deliver the "wow" factor.
Many who have seen this anime would often compare to death note and gundam seed. However this anime is not just a complex battle of good vs. evil. Instead the viewer often tends to question his/her own thoughts on right or wrong choices throughout the anime.
So, if you are still haven’t decided to pick this series up........all I can say is that you are missing out on one of the MUST watch anime of all time.

Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion
Code Geass is one of the top shows of 2006. Everything about this series was amazing except the soundtrack. The soundtrack didn't fit with the anime as I expected. I was hooked after watching the first five minutes of the episode, I had to watch it again because it was so addicting.
Character: 10/10
The characters of Code Geass were well developed throughout the series and also each character has a unique personality. For example, Lelouch acts as the antagonist of the story by his harsh methods and the protagonist by his goals with his sense of justice, "The ends justifies the means". This reminded me of Light Yagami in "Death Note". By the end of series I couldn't decide whether or not Lelouch was the antagonist but, to be honest, I think he was. I also was intrigued by the different personalities of the series like the popular and kind genius with a strong hatred, the soldier with physical abilities exceeding normal humans that always looks for a way to change the society, or an innocent and bold princess that tries to help but is looked down on. The most intriguing character is CC, the girl who granted Lelouch the "Geass", because she is very mysterious and innocent but naive. Her character and her past fills your mind with questions like "Who is she?" or "What happened to her?"
Animation: 10/10
The animation was very vivid and lovely to see. All the mechas were unique and weren't the same model with different colors and a few minor changes. The mechas were masterpieces especially Lancelot which reminded me of Gundam SEED. It was nice to see unique models and not some rip-off off Gundam SEED. The scenery was very nice though during the important scenes like Lelouch and Shirley.
Music: 9/10
The music was amazing; I loved all the openings to the anime. "Colors" by FLOW was an excellent choice for the opening but when they changed openings the song choice were even better like "Kaido Funou" by Jinn or "Hitomi no Tsubasa" by Access. The Ending songs were also pretty good like Ali Project - "Yuukyou Seishunka"or "Mosaic Kakera" by Sunset Swish. They used "Colors" by FLOW again for an ending. I thought it was a good and bad idea at the time. It was a good idea because it was a pretty good song and fits well with the ending but a bad idea because they could of picked a better song choice for last two episodes of the series ending.
The soundtrack of the series wasn't as great as I excepted, I think it was the flaw of this series. I would have like to seen epic music for the epic scenes.
Storyline 10/10
The storyline was very well written and probably the best I seen yet. I love the idea of the main character acting as the antagonist of the story and being viewed as a villain by everyone. It wasn't as extreme as "Death Note" which makes it more enjoyable to watch. The story line contained all the elements for an epic plot like the huge plot twist, character development, a heart breaking death scene, and a cliffhanger ending.
Also one of the best parts of the plot is the conflict between Lalouch Lamperouge and Suzaku Kururugi. They are best friends from childhood but they are the complete opposite of each other. They both have different methods to achieve the goal of changing Britannia. Lelouch's view of justice is "the end justifies the means". While Suzuku's view of justice is less radical and wants to change it peacefully. Throughout the story neither characters knows the true identity of each other until the last few episodes. They weren't expecting their best friend is the their enemy.
Overall 10/10
Overall the series was EPIC, I could not stop watching it like a person on drugs. I even watch this series again and again because it doesn't get old. The ending episodes were amazing except for the fact that they were a bit rushed. I disagree how the end shouldn't end on the cliffhanger. I thought the cliffhanger was very unique for an ending and fills my mind with questions like "Who will succeed?" or "Who will die?". The anticipation of waiting for the next season of "Code Geass" is overwhelming me. I cant wait for 2008 when they first start to air it. I hope it will be the same quality or even better then the first one. So if you want an anime that will blow you away, this is the one to watch.

I can only describe this anime with one word. IT IS AWESOME!
Ok... that's 3 words, but what the heck the message is clear right?
Most animes get boring and are all the same.
I mean the protagonist are always "good". For once its good to have one that is a little cynical and well.... bad? Lelouch is not bad, but one wouldn't consider him "good" either. This anime is great because it has a fast plot and exciting fighting scenes. The mechas are pretty cool too. I could go on for another couple paragraphs, but since I'm lazy lets keep it short.
Code Geass is an anime worth watching, but don't take the time watching it if you can't understand its fast and slightly complex plot.

Posted by : DaLoneWolf Posted on : 2007-12-22
Code Geass is definitely one of Sunrise's top shows. When it first came out I wasn't to keen of it because of it being centered around mecha, but I tried to keep an open mind and watched the 1st episode. Right after the first episode I was hooked. This anime had everything I was looking for and more.
Characters 10/10
One of the best elements in Code Geass was the development and the personality of all the different characters. An example of this is Lelouch. The writers tried to mix in him the role of an antagonist playing as the protagonist and it worked perfectly. Most of the times you can bond and understand his feelings and the struggles and hardships he endures all for his goal.
Music 9/10
The first opening of this anime has become one of my favorite songs. It fit really well into the OP and flowed really well with the opening scenes. The ending songs were well chosen and seemed to fit with the anime, but those songs didn't strike a chord and make me say 'wow'.
Animation 10/10
The animation in this anime is really colorful and well drawn out. The pictures of the characters really suited their personality and didn't seem mismatched. I worried a lot about how the mechas were going to be drawn out when I first started this, but once I started, I got hooked onto the drawings. The mechas were drawn out beautifully and weren't like some 100ft giants automatically killing everything.
Story 10/10
This story and plotline were of the best I've ever seen. It's unique in that the main character is seen as a villain by most of the world and yet follows his own sense of justice. Only one part of the storyline worried me and that was in the beginning where Suzaku appeared. When he came out, I was all like "aw crap, this is gonna be all copied off Gundam Seed.." After I watched further episodes though, I realized that this show was not just a rip-off of Gundam Seed but was unique.
Overall 9.5/10
I really enjoyed this anime. Every week I would sit impatiently on my computer and wait for it to come out. Each episode flowed together nicely and there wasn't really and fillers in this. The only problem that prevents me from giving this anime a 10/10 is the last two episodes. I waited patiently for the last two episodes, hoping they would be a masterpiece and perfectly end the first season, but it did not come out as I hoped. The last two episodes seemed really rushed to me. It was like they were trying to pack a lot of things into the last two episodes when they should have just waited and put those parts into the next season. Overall though, this was a really well-done show and has become the #1 anime on my list.

This is by far one of the best animes I've have ever seen. It reminds me of the time when I played rpgs with the amazing storyline that has crazy plot twists and surprises.
I'm not a very big fan of mecha, but I think this show didn't really base its whole story on the machines. It's a whole lot deeper than that.
I like the way they made the main character, Lelouch, portray regular normal human beings. He wants to create a better world, but has unethical ways of doing it. His best friend, on the other hand, seems a little too naive and thinks he can bring peace with just going along with the flow, thus creating an unending battle. Their goals are the same, but their methods are different. There's more to it than that though. A power called GEASS which Lelouch obtains from a girl name C.C. in the beginning of the anime that helps him carry out his plans. There are so many other things going on and unlike many other animes, this one gets right to the point. I want to say more, but I'm afraid of giving away everything so I'll let everyone else find out for themselves. Can't wait for season 2!

I just finished watching this series and I must say that I am speechless. But it seems that I must continue with words in order for this review to go up. I loved the pace of the story. Some may say that it all happened too fast but this is the kind of pace that keeps me interested and makes me want to watch non-stop. I thought that everything was plotted out so well and it kept me on the edge of my seat. The way everything unfolded was just astonishing and I must say that this is one of the most well written stories I've ever seen and heard. The music was great. I loved the OPs and the endings. The way all the characters were connected made everything conflict with each other but that's what made it interesting. It did take me a little while to grow into Lelouch because he seemed to be a villain as much as he was a hero but he also fights a war on the inside as he does on the outside so I began to like him. And there was so much action that I couldn't possibly say that i wasn't satisfied with it. Code Geass definitely made it into my list of favorite animes and I'm so annoyed right now because I'm waiting for the SEQUEL!

Storyline/plot: 10/10
Excellent storyline. The anime brings you straight to the objectives of the main character, Lelouch, with lots of side plots to let you have a better understanding of the past and present situation. Presented with many mysteries, perspectives of different characters, purposes and twists, the plot will make you addicted to the anime. The story unfolds quickly yet smoothly really captures my heart. I am truly impressed by the way the story is made as it causes viewers to want to anticipate what will happen next. The storyline also contain room for many emotions done properly (unlike Gundam SEED). The storyline also provides deep insights which may seem complex. (Watching the episodes again would reveal more secrets and provide you with a better understanding). The ideas of the anime connects well with me as situations, feelings, events AND THE emotions are life-like. (I felt like crying at times.)
Truly Brilliant!!!
Character development: 10/10
Thoughts that run through the characters and actions made showed the personalities of most characters. Lelouch was the main focus for the anime and his character was clearly illustrated. C.C. seems to have a lack of attention though as her character is quite a mystery. This is appropriate as She is supposed to be a mysterious girl with the knowledge of Geass. (Watch it and you will know =) ). Suzaku and Karen(Kallen) also have their fair share of show time and much is revealed about them. Other side characters seems to matter less which doesn't really bother me as they usually play a minor role in the main plot. Overall, the anime provides excellent character development.
Graphics/Animation: 10/10
Characters have a CLAMP style of drawing enhanced by Sunrise, making them look very well elaborated and beautiful. Characters have significant differences in their faces and facial expressions are well made. Scenarios are very well drawn as well. The KnightMares (mechs) are more realistic in design and how they function is quite well thought of.
Songs/Music: 10/10
The first opening theme, "COLORS" by FLOW, is well suited for Code Geass as it provides the right pace and energy. The second opening theme, "Kaidoku Funou" by Jinn, is kinda weird and it took me some time to accept it. Both the ending themes are very nice too. (Personally I like the 1st OP and 2nd ED best.) Background music is great, too.
Overall: 10/10
Yes, I will give a perfect score for Code Geass as it really took me in from the first episode. The anime allows me to watch it almost non-stop as most episode ends with a cliff-hanger which urges me to find out what will happen next. It is almost unbelievable that Clamp was the one who made this anime. The story is much much much better than other mecha anime like Gundam Seed. The way that characters thought of different options, different possiblities were brilliant. This is the best anime that I ever watched and I believe many would like it too.
The last two episodes (24&25) were very interesting as it was amusing to see how the black knights would just crumble once Zero was not with them. It was however not conclusive at all and the introduction of V.V. just means that more would be shown in the season. Be sure to catch the 2nd season =)
Code Geass will be my new standard for any other anime of this genre as it is truly outstanding.

After seeing the first season of Code Geass, I must say that this anime is far by one of the best anime I have seen. Code Geass earn its place as being ranked #5 in Anime-Source's Best of 2006 poll as it should be. I recommend anyone who is looking for a new anime to watch to get into this series!
Storyline: 10+/10
This is one of the strongest points of Code Geass. A never-ending twist to the story as it goes further into the series. Who doesn’t love a new twist every now and then? The story is about a high school student who is half Japanese and half Britannian name Lelouch Lamperouge. As a child, he saw a Britannian army invaded Japan and labeled Japan as Area 11. Upon witnessing it, Lelouch swore to crush Britannia.
Animation: 9/10
The fighting scenes of Code Geass are exceptionally well done. The smooth transition of the character’s expression is one of the best. Through out episodes 1 – 25, the animation did not slack off. A clearly funded anime production.
Character: 10+/10
Another strong point of Code Geass is its unique characters.
Lelouch Lamperouge: The "protagonist" in this anime is a high school student. He resembles much like the main character of Death Note, Light Yagami. Both high school students, top students in their school, super natural powers, and of course, they both are somewhat evil. Lelouch’s father is the head if Britannia and his mother is Japanese who died when Lelouch was a little boy. Although Lelouch is cunning, daring, and somewhat evil, he has a soft spot for his little sister who lost her ability of sight and mobility due to one incident that caused her severe shock at the time of their mother’s death.
Suzaku Kururugi: For a gundam fan, you can say he is sort of like the "Kira Yamato" of the story. Suzaku is a childhood friend of Lelouch for 7 years and is the son of the prime minister of Japan. He joins Britannia in order to change Britannia from the inside without causing another war in Japan.
There are more characters in Code Geass who has their own characteristics.
Sound/Music: 9/10
The first opening by FLOW is amazing but did not find the second opening to my liking. Maybe because of the choice of music but the opening animation of the 2nd opening is well done, especially the 2nd version of it. The third opening is also well done with better music selection in my opinion and of course the opening scenes are always enjoyable. Both endings are good. The choice of music during each scene is appropriate; however, not enough to earn a perfect score in my opinion.
Overall: 10/10
Code Geass is one of those anime that will stay interesting through out. This anime offers Action, Drama, Mecha, Comedy, Military, Science Fiction, and Fan-Service. What more can you ask? Not to mention a very strong story line with a never-ending twist that will keep you wanting for more Code Geass until it is over. Let's hope second season will be just as good, if not better. Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion earns an easy a perfect score from me.

Posted by : ZGMF-00X Posted on : 2007-10-13
First Impressions: Looking at the premise of the storyline, I thought it was pretty interesting...Till I heard it was made by Sunrise, the very production company who did the disaster called Gundam Seed Destiny. It was mixed opinion when I first dived into the world of Code Geass.
Storyline: Lelouch Lamperouge, a Britannian finds himself living in an occupied Japan, now known as Area 11 after the Britannian Empire has annexed it. Having had a bone to pick with the Empire, Lelouch's plans take a sudden acceleration with the appearance of a mysterious girl from a capsule.
This is where some parallels come into play with Eureka 7...Except that we have a different setting and characters. There's also the hotly contested topic of Britannia's personification of America as well as the director's admittance to using the war in Iraq as a foil to produce this. Nevertheless, the series starts out smoothly even as the "childhood friend on different sides" conflict comes into play with Kururugi Suzaku.
As we move on, the story flips from being a simply Star War-ish parallel of the Rebellion versus the Empire into a strong, emotional one, where Lelouch discovers the true extent of C.C's admission that he will grow further and further away from his loved ones and those close to him. It is interesting to see how first impressions can be so wrong, and that upon exploring the series itself, you can see the constant struggles set in the society, on the battlefield and most importantly, in the characters themselves. Generic? Code Geass is hardly generic, because that is only what is shown on the surface, and those who fail to see beneath that would never understand the depth of this show.
Score: 10/10
Characters: This is one of the greatest strengths of Code Geass.
Lelouch Lamperouge: Likened to the protagonist (or you can even call him an antagonist) of Death Note's Light Yagami, Lelouch has all the elements of an anti-hero: Cocky, cunning, rather use actions than words to prove himself, mostly apathetic when achieving what he wants and manipulative. Aside from his horrific past which was probably the backbone for his personality now, Lelouch is by far one of the best protagonists around in a mecha anime.
Kururugi Suzaku: Childhood friend of Lelouch, and literally the direct opposite of Lelouch. Even as both move towards the same goals of changing Britannia, Suzaku takes a less radical way reeking of idealism. A typical character in a mecha anime, but is not without his own strengths, namely his piloting abilities and his obstinate determination to see things through by his own way.
C.C: The mysterious girl from the capsule. Who is she? What does she want from Lelouch in granting him power? So far as the series has progressed, though, C.C is nothing like the typical android girl character we've seen so many times-quiet, innocent, naive. She manages to put even the calculating Lelouch in his place while protecting him with a sassy and somewhat 'devil-may-care' attitude. Another winner for Code Geass.
Just a few examples, but for the portrayal of these three (and others), Code Geass has done mightily well.
As more and more characters get introduced, we get different introspectives from the respective characters, stating their reasons for their actions and creating greater depth of character not just for the main cast, but for the supporting cast as well. It isn't an easy job, but much credit should be given to the writers of the story.
As Lelouch moves closer towards his goal and more people die or get hurt in the process, Lelouch nevertheless shows the human side of him despite all his manipulations and schemes time and again. C.C also breaks out of a supposedly irrevocable shell of being typecasted as a 'witch' who would use Lelouch for her own agenda, and it is at the very end we realise that she became one of the only people Lelouch can turn to during his times of darkness, contradiction, hesitation and powerlessness.
Score: 10/10
Mecha: Designs seem more or less original for the Knightmare Frames, not counting possible references from Full Metal Panic or Eureka 7 for basic design and Gundam Seed/Seed Destiny for weaponry.
As new mecha are introduced, the concept of 'OWNAGE' did not reach critical proportion as it did with some of the Gundam series. The new suits and upgrades were indeed powerful, but not so much that the pilots had to use their brains, skill, strength and luck to get out of stick situations.
Score: 8/10
Animation/Artwork: As expected of CLAMP for the designs of Lelouch and Suzaku. Artfully (no pun intended) done. The animation was literally almost flawless especially with the fighting scenes, possibly only second to Kanon 2006.
Score: 9/10
Music: Well done OP by FLOW, who did one of the OPs for Eureka 7 as well (Ah...the parallels...) and a rather interesting yet appropriate ED done by Ali Project. BGMs were wonderfully appropriate as well, with a light and naughty tone of notes used for humorous scenes.
On another note, the new OP and ED for Code Geass as it reaches it's last leg were highly unconventional, and it is obvious that being different WILL earn you flak, justified or not. Still, I find the songs to be highly appropriate for the atmosphere and nature of the anime. The last OP for the last two episodes was pretty good too.
Score: 9.5/10
Enjoyment: Definitely one of THE shows to watch. To skeptics from their first impressions: Don't be. It's as enjoyable for mecha anime as they come, possibly one of the best. Of course, plenty of people were probably irritated by the fact that Code Geass ended on a cliffhanger, but the last two episodes were absolutely earth-shaking and explosive enough for me to give this a perfect 10 in terms of enjoyment.
Score: 10/10
Overall: 9.5/10

I strongly suggest the posted In-depth review of this show (see the links above), for this is only and abridged version that doesn’t do justice to the true depth of Code Geass.
Code Geass is a truly outstanding series. The setting is an alternate future in which the mighty Britannian Empire has become the world’s largest super power. Seven years after crushing Japan, the Emprire finds in Lelouch, a young Britannian, its greatest opponent yet while, at the same time, Lelouch’s friend Suzaku becomes the most determined of its defenders.
The show prominently features a story of duality and contradictions, in which both Lelouch and Suzaku could be hailed as both heroes and traitors. The story’s development is highly complex and involves the entire and varied cast of characters consisting of high school students, ambitious soldiers, determined freedom fighters and many others. The management of this cast is carried out superbly, their relations detailed and intricate, and their development carried out in a consistent and believable manner. But among this cast, the importance and the conflict between the two main characters is still the most prominent element of the show. It is always great to watch Lelouch’s clever, if ruthless, machinations against the powerful and cruel Britannia Empire, while the path he threads as Zero, Leader of the Order of the Black Knights, leads him to a confrontation against his best friend Suzaku. By the end, both of them are beyond a point of no return in their struggles, and it is immensely gratifying to see them get to it.
The plot also has some outstanding management. The character stories and the reasons for their opposition are clearly drawn and are understandable. The mood of the show is generally serious, although it does have some bits of comedy and romance here and there to lighten the mood and create a contrast of sorts between the different elements of the show. They also work well to provide a more holistic atmosphere for the characters to develop and interact in. A less important element of the show is its prominent mecha component. The mech battles and technologies presented are actually quite appealing and always a good watch. They provide an excellent representation for the ongoing war of independence. They are not the most important part of the show, but those looking for cool battle scenes have plenty to be satisfied with.
The character designs, done by CLAMP, bring a shojo-esque look to the show that is rather uncommon in darker shows such as this, but are still immensely appealing and are fluidly animated. Although the animation does let down once in a while, like in every other show, the quality of the animation is consistently quite high. This can specially be noted in the battle animations which, as I said before, can leave even action fans craving for more.
The in-show music was also quite good except for the insert music in episodes 17 and 20, which were really not what I would have liked to hear. All other inserts and background music are very well fitting and pleasant to hear. In terms of Ops and EDs, the second OP seems to have put off a lot of people, but eventually I got to like it. The first ED was actually my least favorite of them all, but that is because I never quite liked the performer’s music on the whole. Still, the music and audio of the show are outstanding aside from those weak mentions.
Code Geass is a show that can really make you think. Does the end justify the means? or is it acceptable to take a high road that stands only a slim chance of accomplishing what you wish for? A viewer is invited to pick his own side while watching the struggles of the characters, the ruthless Lelouch, the pure Suzaku, the mysterious C.C., the brave Kallen, the kind Euphemia. All of their stories coalesce to produce this anime masterpiece. The Show is serious in its mood, dark in its tone and takes full advantage of the tragedies that have developed throughout it to lead to an explosive, if inconclusive, finale. Even if the story told by Code Geass is ostensibly not over yet, we are left with this well-conceived and almost flawlessly executed production, a must-watch for any anime fan, unless you don't like the ugly side of life or are only into light-hearted fare.

Looking back at some of the shows I've watched, I wonder what it was that made me start watching the show in the first place. After watching this show, I think I've definitely learned my lesson. I don't like dark anime. I don't like animes where the hero is more of a villain. Code Geass is definitely one of those shows.
Code Geass is about a man who is the child of an emperor. Along with his sister he was sacrificed and considered dead when the Empire invaded and conquered Japan. Now with Japan under control of the Empire, Lelouch seeks vengeance for the murder of his mother by his half brother and sister. His vengeance seeks the destruction of the empire. To bring this about, he uses a weapon given him by a mysterious girl, one that allows him to push a person into doing whatever he wants them to do, if only once.
I have to give the writers of this show credit. It is extremely well done. Half the time you want to cheer for Lelouch, and half the time you want him to get his head ripped off. The music is terrific, the animation is good, though not always excellent. But this show really comes down to the plot.
I think that you either love these kind of shows, or you hate them, and after having watched nearly the entire series, I realize that I definitely fall into the latter category. I cannot stand how they build up characters so that you like them, and then destroy those characters. When it comes down to it, I like happy endings. I like it when the good guys win. And in a show like this, all they are saying is that there are no good guys, and that even if there were, the good guys don't always win. Sure, I know real life is like that, but you know, I'm watching this show to be entertained, and to me, this is not entertainment. Unless you are the kind of person who likes this kind of entertainment, I strongly urge you to give this one a pass.

A superb series.
Great action, highly detailed and very attractive animation and a decent depth that makes you enjoy the show rather than think on its issues too much.
Story (9)
It's a story of revenge and we all know how juicy and tragic that can get. The little twists in the plot make this an enjoyable ride right through the end, leaving you wanting more, so much more...
Characters (10)
As many as the characters are, you can definitely differentiate them not only in looks but in personality which I think is good, makes it less confusing. Development of each is average, focusing more on the main protagonists. Something to note would be the conflicts and the interactions these characters do, I’m sure a few of you would hate a certain character and on the other hand be torn by the tragedy that one character faces.
Animation (10)
Very nicely done, one of the better series to come out in its time. Nice flow of movement, cohesive colors, and pretty character designs (especially the females).
Music (9)
Works well with the overall tone of the series. Decent OP and ED; a little weird at first for me when I heard it, but eventually it grew on me I guess.
Overall(10)
It’s got most things covered: pretty girls/boys, mecha, action, drama some hint of comedy, and a decent story. I highly recommend this series, if not for the brilliant character designs then for the storyline. Go watch it. You’ll get it...

Right off the bat, I think that side note implies mediocrity. Code Geass perfects the mediocre class of anime, creating a damn good anime that just plain sucks. The joy of paradoxes.
First off, the animation is nice. A ton of detail to character designs and high framerates make for pleasant viewing. Though the backgrounds are a bit rushed in a few scenes (some of the dock battles come to mind) it doesn't detract much from the series. Lots of outstanding graphics to make up for this. The action scenes are all particularly well done but if you have several extra months to air the final episodes, at least try to make them look somewhat better than the quality of the original series...
But my poor ears. I probably could have sung the opening and ending themes better and even then it'd be about as good as nails on a chalkboard. Decent insert songs did alright but weren't all that memorable; it was pretty clear a good musical score wasn't much of the focus here. Though the voice actor did a nice job at acting out Lelouch, I thought he was a little too deep to fit his character. There were lots of flaws and holes here that could have been polished.
The story actually had an interesting premise. We've got a cocky, though egalitarian, kid by the name of Lelouch who stumbles upon an ultimate power. Been there, done that. The Geass, however, proved a very unique twist, and I really like how they used it to further not only the story but the Lelouch as well. My gripe here is how poorly the story was played out. It's entertaining but makes very little logical sense and things seem to happen simply because they're "cool." It aimed for the anime fanboyism element in many parts and that is a definite hurt to quality.
Characters weren't bad. Lelouch proved a unique and interesting lead. Compared to many of your trash and brainless male leads, he actually has a fair amount of depth. I also like how they blurred his goals as questionably good or evil. While not a fan of the "there are no absolutes" philosophical crowd, they really don't try to present him as such. Ironically, I really disliked Suzaku; I swear he and Euphemia were ripped straight out of Gundam Seed and, sadly, lack the depth of either Kira or Lux. Though Suzaku was weak, at least he wasn't diagnosed with pacifism syndrome; points there I guess.
Overall, though, it`s a fun watch. The storyline isn't as cliche as it seems and there are a fair amount of twists and turns to keep you interested. A unique, successful approach to an idea that has been seen before. It goes to show that, even when working with cliches, you can make something work well.

I watched the first episode of Code Geass because I lacked anything better to do, not because of any real enthusiasm. Strangely enough, I became hooked. This is a show which rises above its (undeniable) flaws and is truly entertaining.
In brief, what we have here is a mecha-action-supernatural-school-tragedy. In an alternate present, in which Japan has been absorbed by the Britannian Empire (a twisted, more oppressive version of the British Empire), 17-year-old student Lelouch is granted a supernatural power of compulsion by a mysterious girl and instigates a rebellion, with wide-reaching and often tragic consequences for those around him.
The series' mecha action is provided by the Britannian Knightmare Frames, mecha which can 'skate' around. The skating is perhaps just a gimmick, but it does lend the series' mecha battles a certain fluid beauty. The animation quality is always acceptable and often quite good. CLAMP were brought in for the character designs and their quality work shows.
We should note that, while the violence is never gratuitous, the animators don't shy away from portraying distressing subjects, such as ghetto clearances and mass suicides (in the first episode alone!) The brutality of the Britannian occupation and the resistance is juxtaposed very effectively with Lelouch's serene-seeming school, until the two worlds converge as the series reaches its conclusion.
Our hero is a man of thought rather than of action and his supernatural power, the Geass, is a fascinating dynamic. Throughout the series he is contrasted with his childhood friend, Suzaku, who has become a Britannian soldier in an attempt to reform the Empire from within. Both are well-rounded, interesting characters and the series often makes us think hard about whose choice was the 'right' one - although, while this show poses serious questions, don't make the mistake of considering it a serious show.
Code Geass has a large supporting cast and several complex subplots which are often easy to miss. Sadly, with so many characters and agendas to cover, many people don't as much screen time as I'd like. Then again, the same complexity and breadth means that it does reward re-watching: when I watched it for a third time, I was still noticing little scenes and facts which I hadn't noticed initially, or had forgotten.
This is a series with significant flaws, chiefly that the plot is sometimes too filled with twists for its own good, and occasionally pushes my suspension of disbelief, and that some of the relationships and conflicts are handled with too much melodrama. Nevertheless, it overcomes these problems and somehow works. I enjoyed nearly every minute of each episode, and I was always left wanting more. Despite its problems Code Geass is a real blast; I have no hesitation in awarding it a big 8. Cheers, Sunrise!

Initially I did not want to write a review about Code Geass yet, because it is not finished. without seeing the second season, giving scores to the first just does not feel right.
However, there are some things I want to write about this series and when looking at the score criteria, I realized they are not going to change greatly after seeing the second season. For example the animation and sound score will not change even if it will be completely different in the second season. Also the story and characters kind of belong the the first season as they were created and introduced there. And I sure did enjoy this first season of Code Geass, even if the second season is going to be totally nuts I still had a lot of fun watching the first one and nothing can change that.
The Animation was pretty nice. There are some people who dislike Clamps character design, however I kind of liked it; it is a question of taste. Same with the mixed CG animations, which actually fit very well into the anime. Anyway some repeated scenes (However much fewer than in GS for example)and static drawings were a little drawback.
I loved the Soundtrack. Some remarkable bgm music and songs in there. Sometimes the music could have been a bit more epic or classical when it was rather modern.
History:
This is where Code Geass scores most. The story is set in an alternative timeline, where the technologically advanced Empire of Britannia has conquered Japan. It is about two friends attending school together, Lelouche and Suzaku. Both have dark secrets and paths are split by their different goals and eventually collide.
The funny thing about its story is, that there is actually nothing new in it. Each element has already been there in another Anime. But all this has never been composed into one anime before. And it has been done most magnificently I might add.
I mentioned before I liked the character design of Clamp in this Anime. Also there are very many different characters and they all are somehow important. There is also some nice character development for most characters. I really disliked Suzaku, I cannot imagine someone actually likes him. He was so stereotypical good guy and always crosses Lelouche's great plans. As you might have noticed by now I liked Lelouche. I love the idea of an "evil" guy being the main character just as it was done in Death Note.
Value:
I think this might be affected by watching the second season but up until now I VERY much enjoyed the show. There is suspense, comedy, mechas, cool characters...Code Geass has it all. Just incredible. If you are still unsure whether to watch this show or not, because you dislike mecha shows you should give the show a chance anyway, because even though mecha's are important, there is so much more to it.
Oh and for the cliffhanger. I agree, this one is most cruel! There was already a very evil cliffhanger on episode 23 and we had to wait so long for episode 24 and 25 (Which were just great!) only to be left off begging for more even worse.

Code Geass is an amazing accomplishment and undoubtedly one of the best anime of the season. I did find that the idea of the "geass" really unoriginal. It's basically a Death Note with mechas. The protagonist, Lelouch, is granted special powers which he can now control humans by changing brainwaves or something along that line. Catch is he can only control a mind once and cannot repeat. See the resemblance to Death Note? Protagonist granted special powers to take over the world and he has a helper (shinigami and C.C). To sum it all up, an insurgent with powers.
The plot may have been a knock-off Death Note but I truly did enjoy this anime to the fullest degree. As many people would expect if an anime is copying an anime you couldn't possibly enjoy it. Totally wrong. Code Geass is one of those animes that may not have the most original plot but you can still enjoy. The overall story is still dark and about revenge. Although, Code Geass would make you sad when its time to be sad. Code Geass would really make you feel emotions as it went along. The fluidity of the plot did well. Things connected and you easily understood everything that was happening. I wasn't perplexed and didn't strain myself to understand the plot.
The animation was nothing outstanding and it didn't have too many bright colors but what can you expect from an anime about revenge? Dark colors completed the atmosphere and gave you the sensation of a sinister intent. The mechas in this anime are almost sacrosanct. The important frames were unique and varied. Something that did bother me was how invincible the Lancelot was. It could almost single-handedly defeat a whole army. Kind of unrealistic and unbelievable. Character development was obviously there. You felt an affinity to all the characters. The romantic relationship between Lelouch and Shirley added something to this anime. It touched up onto the softer side of this anime.
FLOW have done it again. They managed to create another hit and integrate it with an anime. COLORS is one of my favorite new songs and it was great. After that... the music coordinator died and a tone deaf monster took over. The sets of songs after that was death to my ears and was atrocious. I cringed every time a song came up. BGM was fitted into the anime well and it was added into the scenes well. It didn't make the scene look cheesy or over exaggerated.
Overall this was jam packed with enjoyment. It wasn't as dark and sinister as Death Note so I think I had more fun watching this. The mechas were amazing and to throw them into battle was better. I highly recommend this anime to everyone. Oh and Season 2 is just around the corner!!
Story: 9/10
Animation: 9/10
Music: 7/10
Overall: 9/10
I understand that if you average these scores it obviously wouldn't be 9/10 but I honestly felt that Code Geass was a 9/10. Disregarding the real numbers I felt that in terms of how much I enjoyed it was a 9/10.

Animation
The animation is nothing spectacular but above average from most mechs. They don`t use many repeat frames or same scenes at all. They also have many different settings for all the various battles that look very nice. They also opt to not use very much CG making everything have more of the anime feel. The best part of series is when they actually have super powerful mechs battle it out. Those battles are always animated closely and flow perfectly. Although just like most other mech animes I found it a bit unbelievable when a single super powerful mech can just destroy entire armies. They also get lazy when they animate this although it still looks alright.
Sound
The music they choose for openings varied a bit. I enjoyed the first opening but the second was miserable. The ending also worked very well and I also liked that song. I didn`t really notice the OST very much so it didn`t leave much of an impression on me. The voice acting was standard. Most of the voices worked and did there job. A few of the minor characters were a little annoying but I got used to it.
Story
This was a strong part of the series. Although they do introduce a lot of topics that do not get any development. I think most of it will be explained in the next season. The main story was the most important anyway and this came with many twists and turns. It always amazed me how they planed out each step of the way while not hinting at anything. Even the side stories were very smart and entertaining. You were always surprised with how cunning Lelouch was. Aside from the last episode you would have thought that Lelouch was close to invincible when it comes to planning anything. As I mentioned they have a major cliffhanger at the end thus this made me feel a bit miserable because now I have to wait again for the next season to come out. This lowers the story score a bit.
Character
All the important characters were very well done. They had a tendency to make major character changes in short periods of time. I.e. for C.C. you saw her change drastically in the last episode. Aside from this the "mind Controlling" ability always seemed to come in handy at the right time. When a character knew too much they would automatically get purged. Although I guess this make the anime function as a whole. It did halt some of the development for the characters. Even so this did pose too much of a problem. The only character I really disliked was Mao another "geass user". He was portrayed an user who lost himself to the power. Thus most of what he did was purely crazy. This wasn't the reason I disliked him it was more his obsession with C.C. and inability to accept the fact that he's unwanted.
Value and Enjoyment
They were trying really hard to give a message of how power can ruin someone. They failed miserably since they did this at the very end. I also found that the whole cause was lost since they WERE fighting for freedom but really Lelouch doesn't give a shit. Thus I guess the only real message you can get is that people are easily manipulated by their desires and therefore will lose their way to them.
I think I'll re-watch some of the anime but not its entirety. Since you already know all the events you won't be surprised again. They don't have much deep content so not much NEW can be found by watching carefully. You can probably enjoy the fights and battles again. I really enjoyed the anime since it was a new approach for mechs. I`m looking forward to seeing the next season hopefully it doesn't take too long. I think most mech fans will enjoy this anime. Even for others who do not like mechs too much this is a fairly good anime to watch if you ever wish to give mechs a go. So enjoy!

The suspense that this anime give for us (to wait for months for the release of the continuance) is just frustrating.
Now that it has come to episode 25, I think I can give a summary for season 1 first (season 2 in October?)
Animation: 9/10
This is CLAMP we're talking about. They have similar animation for all their productions and I have no complaints about it. Not the best, but it's still good to watch. Reminds you a lot of Tsubasa Chronicles though (Syaoran look-alike?)
Story/Plot: 10/10
Some people may think that it is ridiculous, but I think it is ingenious. With Lelouch, 'the evil guy' as main character, Code Geass has the story that can always keep you wanting to watch the next episode in anticipation of changing events, because anything can happen. The friendship, the war, the stand that they made.. and the 'machina' just add up to a perfect score for me.
Character: 9/10
The main star is of course Lelouch himself. Enough said. Well.. maybe more character development for the rest would be good.
Music/Song: 8/10
The first OP is definitely perfect for the anime. 'Colours' by FLOW rocks. Unfortunately, the rest of the songs and music are not that memorable to me.
In summary:
It's good enough to make me start counting down to October. Is there any way for them to release season 2 earlier?
