Summary, Story, and Plot:
Ichiro seems to be a common name for characters with a penchant for getting into trouble, and Hanada Ichiro is no exception to this stereotype. He's rude, crude, selfish, childish, and notorious for picking on the town's pets and animals, and what's worse he's hardly apologetic for any of his pranks. Without thinking about the consequences of his actions, he carries on in this manner until one day an accident changes his life forever, granting him the unwanted ability of being able to hear, see, and interact with ghosts (no one but a single friend will believe him, though, which makes it all the more frustrating).
To his own chagrin and annoyance, ghosts suddenly bombard him with requests that apparently only he can accomplish for them, and he is inevitably forced to come to terms with his gift as well as the harsher aspects of life. In this Ichiro slowly begins to learn and grow with each experience, and one soon comes to appreciate and respect his strong will and practical sense of the people around him, despite his uncooth character.
Hanada Shounen-shi is a simple but heart-warming anime that often pokes fun at death rather than turning it into a somber reality, treating it as a fact-but-matter-of-fact part of life. Its viewers are treated to a series of separate sub-story plots that last (on average) anywhere between 1-3 episodes each, granting us an endearing look into the characters' heartfelt wishes and the emotions behind them as well as the hilarious misadventures Ichiro often finds himself in as a result of them.
Never pretentious, this anime thrives on sweet simplicity and allows for any complexities to speak for themselves in inherently implicit tones. For this reason alone I have no other choice but to award this anime a 10 in story.
Animation:
Just like the story the animation is kept quite simple and reminds me of a cross between One Piece and Crayon Shin-chan (with story characteristics that are also quite similar to both animes). Character designs are varied enough to tell one from another, but the style is unmistakeably similar and never deviates. While many may be put off by the anime's apparent lack of beautiful design, it more than makes up for it with its smooth and fluid motion as well as its more often picturesque backgrounds (which, again, never border on pretentious by slamming us with a canvas of candy-coated colors). For overall animation, I award this anime with an 8.
Music:
Okay . . . Backstreet Boys for both OP and ED. I_am_not_kidding. I nearly lol'ed out of my seat the first time I played the first episode and heard "I'll Be The One" blasting back at me.
But putting aside the fact that the Backstreet Boys are the Backstreet Boys, I can honestly understand why their songs were chosen for this anime. With warm and simple tones they really help to set the mood of this series, and the lyrics from the OP alone is enough to give you a good idea of what the anime is all about. Rich in melody but soft in beat and rhythm, that's this anime in a nutshell.
The BGMs aren't worth mentioning but for the simple fact that they were not meant to be worth mentioning. They blend in well with the anime and I hardly noticed them, which was the point. They lend where and when they need to, permitting the anime itself to dominate the screen.
Characters:
Again, simple, but with an underlying score of complexities that are kept under the radar so as not to overwhelm their overall personalities with them. Ichiro is the often misunderstood rebel with a heart of gold and a family made of steel nerves. Everyone is kept straight to the point, so personal angst barely threads by with a minimum. Just about every character is kept focused on the day or goal at hand, living their lives (or after lives) one day at a time. Since the anime wouldn't be as great without these loveable characters, they can only be given a strong 10.
Overall:
Sweet and endearing with just a touch of toliet humor, this anime quickly became a favorite despite some of Ichiro's more disgusting traits (I got used to the almost always present drop of snot and oddly timed nude shots --- what's a mischievous little boy that doesn't like to go buck-nekkid from time to time?), and it's one of the few that I hope for another season some time in the near future. Or at least a movie.
Overall rating is a 9.
