Hitohira

Studio : XEBEC M2

Length : 12 Episodes

Year : 2007

Genre : Drama - Romance - Slice of Life - Shoujo

Synopsis :
Spring seems to be a big deal at Sumizuka High School. Their festivals and school play surround the idea, all the students talk about it constantly, and there's even a dress dedicated to the Spring Goddess holed up in an old storage room. Asai Mugi, a freshman, stumbles upon the dress one afternoon and is totally mesmerized by it. When the school's Drama Reseach Society asks her to join their club, she gets all flustered, mainly because she freaks out when she gets nervous from people watching her. Being on stage would only give her a heartattack, and though the club organizers ensure her that she won't have to perform, Mugi is quite cautious about the whole thing. She reluctantly accepts their invitation in hopes of improving her self-confidence.

I could have sworn I wrote a review for this show months ago. However apparently, its another one that slipped through the cracks for me. I won't bother to write the synopsis of Hitohira. Theres already a fairly good one above. Having said this, one thing that was left out of the above synopsis, was how or rather why the drama club recruited Mugi.

To start out, I have to say, that I enjoyed the story. It was silly, and more then a little ludicrous. A drama research club, competing with the drama club. A club with only a few members, the kids getting all serious about this... Even still it was fun to watch. The animation and artwork wasn't outstanding. I can't even remember the OP or ED, so either they were bad, or they just didn't stand out enough for me to remember. What really caught my interest in this story, was the main character. She was recruited by the drama club for her amazing voice. A voice she only uses unconsciously when she's excited. Normally shes extremely nervous and shy, and can hardly speak. Speaking for myself, this kind of character is appealing, and watching her "grow up" was enjoyable. Likewise the side characters were fun to watch as well. And provided a bit of drama in the series.

Overall, while the series certainly doesn't make my list of all time favorites. It was enjoyable to watch, and would be worth watching again. I do recommend it, for anyone looking for a bit of light humor, and a small amount of drama.

Found this on AS's spotlight animes... What attracted me was the animation style, so I decided to give this a try. Well... I wasn't hoping for much, so I wasn't really disappointed. This series is what slowed me down in my anime watching, as I'm much less than enthusiastic to try and watch the next episode.

Plot
There is one main plot throughout the storyline, which is Mugi trying to overcome her shyness. There isn't any twist to make it more interesting, or if there is any it didn’t mattered. There are a few side stories like the relationship between the two club managers, but it hardly played a part in the main one and it still isn't very interesting to be considered an attraction to the anime.

The ending somewhat made the rest of the previous episode worth watching, but I imagined that people would have threw it aside before that. And it's not like the plot made it such that the earlier parts can't be interesting. In fact, it may be correct to say that they actually overdid the ending in comparison with the rest of the episode; it's like they mainly concentrate on that.

Story Style
Very slow paced with little things going on. Some scenes like to stall when nothing is happening. This makes it very difficult to involve the audience into the story (like me). And there are some very cheesy and predictable moments. There is flow of the plot, but there is pretty much no selling point until ending.

Animation
I liked the animation style the moment I see it. Sadly it doesn’t contain high detail movements. Action scenes are best described as awkward. The other thing can be praised for is the humorous effects like Nono's evil aura and Chitose's dreamy exressions.

Music and Sounds
Boring music. Despite being the main character, Mugi's voice sound pretty bad, as she fails as a shy voice and the difference between her loud voice and shy voice is too outstanding to make the parts feel real.

Overall
I kind of hate to fail this, but it just isn't interesting enough.

Review based on all 12 Japanese w/subtitles Episodes...

ANIMATION: Big reliance on earth-toned colors (orange, brown, and yellow). The school uniforms are brown and much of the environment of the school is the same. Usually anime hair-colors are bright and colorful, but the characters in this series are more on the darker side. Aside from that, character-design is decent, though background detail is minimal. (7/10)

CHARACTERS: A small cast, but enough variation in personalities to keep things interesting. I enjoyed Mugi's plight and watching her grow, but supporting-characters Kayo-chan and Chitose-chan were my favorites. (8/10)

MUSIC: The opening theme took a while to get used to, but now I really enjoy it. It has a good beat and is quite different from a lot of the techno-ish songs we find in other series. The ending theme isn't one of my favorite, but I don't hate it either. (7/10)

STORY: It's definitely a shoujo-type series, but it has that "do your best" mentality we see in shounen-type series. The story has a very specific plotline, though plenty of side-stories from the rest of the cast soon develop along the way. Pacing is pretty steady, but I was suprised to see the climax come much earlier than expected. This is certainly unusual, though not in a negative way. It provided a lot of cool-down time to wrap things up nicely in the end. (8/10)

OVERALL: Not an entirely interesting anime since it features mostly teenage-drama, but I appreciate all the attention given to Mugi's desire to change. The series has a lot of heart and with the straight-forward means to push the story along, it made for an easy-adventure to take in. It doesn't require a lot of thought, so that's probably what helped make Hitohira a smooth, enjoyable anime series. (8/10... 4 stars)

This is one anime that grabbed my attention early and kind of tapered off in keeping my interest. One thing that I found very unusual about this anime was how completely unexpected the route was. Usually when I watch a anime or read a manga I can usually see what the direction of the story will be. In this one in the first few episodes I thought I knew what the path would be and then found that my expected path was completely different from what actually happens.

Overall while I did enjoy this anime and would recommend it to most people I found that it was not the attention grabbing story that I would normally enjoy. I usually will rate an anime based mostly on enjoyability of the show. This time it is no different for me. I give the enjoyability an 8 out of 10. I think that the animation would get a 6 out of 10 and music a 7 out of 10. Plot and story quality gets a 9 out of 10 for me.

This is a show I probably will not be re-watching, though I was very glad to watch it once.
