Darker Than Black is one of those few truly dark, realistic anime that is probably the best gateway into anime since Cowboy Bebop.

Story (9.5/10): Darker than Black takes place in a somewhat creepy world where the stars are fake, and each star represents a "contractor." The concept of the contractor is a different take on people with powers; I liked the idea of contractors needing to pay a remuneration (smoking, writing poetry, placing marbles in a pattern) for using their power. I also liked how becoming a contractor leads to a change in mentality, with contractors becoming beings that think solely on logic; however, unlike Vulcan logic, contractors are much more cold-hearted in their decision making. Coupled with the emotionless "dolls," who are used as trackers, Darker than Black has a running theme about the humanity of these morphed humans. Most of the series is several individual stories divided into two stories. All of these stories are interesting. My favorite was about the suppressed fire contractor Mai. Towards the end the main story involving the mysterious Amber fully takes over. I really liked the ending; I thought it was exciting and nicely balanced being dark and hopeful. There seems to be a lot of complaint about the end. I do wish more had been covered about the origins of the contractors and Heaven's Gate and Hell's Gate. Nonetheless, I was satisfied with what was covered and feel complaints about the end are overblown. The last episode is kind of a gag episode that takes place before the events at the true end (ep. 25), but it was a funny episode.

Characters (9/10): The focus is on Hei's 4 person cell and the detective Kirihara. As a group they act like the bleak syndicate cell that they are; but, you feel, even with the grumpy contractor-hating Huang, a sense of camaraderie between them. For instance, Yin hardly ever stops wearing her emotionless doll exterior, but quietly always shows a lot of care for her teammates, especially Hei. Hei is a great two-faced character, acting like a shy, kind young man in public before quickly reverting to a cold contractor. It becomes challenging figuring out how Hei truly feels in situations. Hei is cool due to his reputation in the show is a feared reaper among contractors; yet he becomes even better when he makes more "human" decisions, especially towards the end. The workaholic Kirihara and observational black cat contractor Mao, were both appreciated as openly insightful characters. When the show gets to its main plot we finally get to meet Amber, who proves to be a good confident and charismatic character. Characters like the M16 pretty boy November 11, another doll who shows feeling July, the fire girl Mai, and the sadistic elf-looking Wei, are just some of the interesting characters who show up throughout to prevent the small core cast from becoming stale. One more note are the odd, out of place loser detective Gai and his outlandish female otaku assistant Kiko. Their comedy and light-hearted aurora are very odd placements in the normally bleak story-lines. Nonetheless, I really loved when they showed up and their comedy was never misplaced.

Animation (8/10): Character designs are good from portraying the gruff look of downtrodden Huang, to the stern and stressed look of a workaholic Kirihara, and even pink hair and other otaku flags raised in Kiko's look. This show was definitely created to look realistic and succeeds in doing so. I did not feel the animation was the highlight of Darker than Black, but it matches with the story. The action sequences were all nicely executed, and thankfully do not hold out on brutal images. You can truly see the effect of each power, no matter how cruel; a nice break from the current trend of energy blasts or cockpit damage resulting in a cut or bruise.

Music (9/10): It loses a little because the second ending, which is decent, just does not measure up to the replay that everything else has here. The first OP, Howling, seems to be heavily popular, and deserves its status; but, I really loved the second OP, Hero Without A Name, and find myself repeating that song constantly. The first ED is an emotional, beautiful song with beautiful animation. Sound is solid and fitting, but any other music is unmemorable.

Entertainment (10/10): I really like how even though most of the story was 2 episode mini-arcs, they all felt like a continuous story was running. I felt I gained something, whether it be about the characters or the world of Darker than Black in each arc. This fueled my addiction, starving for more even at the conclusion of each story. The action is impressive as Hei and other contractors are clearly trained and skilled in their work. This is the kind of world where I think realistic action and powers is really proper. I also loved the detail in making sure to reveal everyone’s remuneration, as I felt compelled to learn about each of these along with each power. The story got really dark and creepy at several places, and you end up feeling sorry for a lot of these people caught up in the mystery of the world. In spite of this, there were actually good comedic moments that seemed to come naturally (strange since much of the cast acts bleak and emotionless). Even the last episode gag felt natural. The deep dramatic moments and unspoken romantic interests were nice touches that drove this anime towards greatness.

Darker than Blackis a great show that every one should watch; also, it should work great as an anime that could be receptive to casual audiences.

Darker Than Black was recommended to me by a psychiatrist during a therapy session. I was battling a serious Romantic Comedy anime addiction and needed help. He told me that there is no better place to take refuge than in the post-apocalyptic world of DARKER THAN BLACK!!

Story 8/10: The show started off following a monster of the week format and while the idea of contractors and Hell's Gate was undeniably intriguing, it seemed that the story had no direction. Half way through the series they quickly reward you by uncovering mysteries about the Syndicate and Hell's Gate. Remarkable character development takes place as the story progresses making Darker Than Black one of a kind. Although the first half of the series seems irrelevant to the story as a whole, contractors with unique powers and obeisances should be enough to keep you glued to your seat.

Characters 10/10: Characters featured in this show may appear to one dimensional at first, but become very enjoyable when character development takes place. Hei, Huang, and Yin each get episodes dedicated to revealing their past experiences. Not only are the characters unique with distinct personalities, you also get to see hinted signs of them becoming more human throughout the show in which was very touching.

Animation 8/10: Animation was fairly well done. Character designs and backgrounds were simple but of high quality.

Music 8/10: The two OPs were...eh. The ED Tsukiakari is favorite song ever featured in anime!

Overall 9/10: Despite a few unanswered questions and a really vague ending, Darker Than Black excels in every category and is well worth your time.

About an interesting post-apocalyptic world in which there are super humans called contractors and strange human mediums called dolls. A battle between intelligence organizations ensues over several strange and rare materials with contractors and dolls on each side.

The good:

Animation: Animation was pretty good. There was fast paced action and the abilities were all very well portrayed.

Story: A pretty good story. It had some depth with some fairly interesting plot twists.

Characters: This was a very strong suit of Darker than Black. Each contractor had very interesting powers and a unique remuneration (payment for using said powers). Each and every contractor was quite unique. The characters all develop as you start to see some contractors seem as more than just some monster. They all begin to develop apparent emotions and become much more human.

The so so:

The music did not really stand out.

The bad:

The ending in some ways was disappointing. I sort of feel bad saying that as the plot at the end is pretty amazing and really threw me for a loop. What I did not like was that I found that the resolution made the contractors seem a lot less amazing and special. Contractors seemed sort of fear provoking and cool in the beginning of the anime, but they seem too different and not as cool anymore at the end.

The OVA (episode 26) was poorly done. It took place after the happenings of the series and did not make any sense at all. Characters that were killed off were back in the future story for some reason. There was no purpose to the plot at all. Hei was not at all developed as a character which is really too bad as there could have been a lot of cool questions answered. I would recommend watching the Anime and skipping the OVA.

-------------------------------

Overall a pretty good anime. It's an interesting story following a contractor, Hei, that seems all too human, yet beyond human at the same time. You can never really tell what Hei is thinking, though he is a very amusing and likable character. The story has some cool plot twists that I did not really expect and some very cool characters that you could really follow. It was not the best anime that I have seen, but a very solid one. It was quite enjoyable and I would recommend it to anyone who likes action and some sci fi. 8/10

Story
It has a solid storyline. There are people with supernatural powers and after using their power, they are required to perform an obeisance. The 'obeisance' thing makes these anime original to others. I also like the fact that the main character is working for the mafia, and I love mafia stories.

Animation
It was a great performance in terms of animation as expected from BONES. The effects when they use their powers are really good and the fighting scenes are breathe taking. The only flaw is sometimes you will see characters that have distorted faces when they are in the background.

Characters
The characters are lovable because of their unique powers. Their powers are very original and when you think about it, you wish you had that kind of power. They had a very good job in making the contractors and real people interact with each other. The character design seems to be simple but you will get into it.

Music
All the music is really cool especially the first opening song. It adds an impression that this anime is really a cool one.

Overall: 8/10
It was a really good anime for me. If you enjoy watching fight scenes that involves supernatural powers, this is definitely for you.

Darker than Black is another Bones anime but it’s one of their few ones that focuses on adults rather than teenagers. Heck, 9/10 anime focus on teenagers, so when one decides to focus on people above that accursed age of 16, it really is a refreshing change. DtB doesn't really do anything radically different from any other anime, but it still manages to be thoroughly entertaining nevertheless.

I do have a problem with the lead in DtB. Hei/Li/BK201 is unbelievably cool and ferocious when he dons his mask. The lack of emotion the mask portrays is chilling. However he is just as emotionless when he doesn’t have the mask on. I found it very frustrating watching him at the start of the series do the extent that I considered dropping the thing. Luckily there are other characters who carry the show along, such as Yin and Huang (who makes a great character you love to hate). Hei does show a bit more emotion, particularly towards the end, but I still find he pales in comparison to the others

At the start, Darker than Black is confusing. Very, very confusing. Seriously, they don’t explain anything to you and leave loads up to yourself to figure out. This means the earlier episodes, while undeniably cool, are a bit overwhelming and may not leave you with the best impression of the show. But this is actually where this shows shines: its gradual revealing of the plot and the world of the contractors. With every episode more is revealed. You learn more about each character, which makes them easier to relate to and more enjoyable to watch as you find out what’s driving them. By the end even Hei has become a likable character, while still being the cold, ultra-cool killer he was at the start.

Darker than Black also has a great sense of humour. The episodes with the detective were the highlights of the first half of the series for me. I could tell when they were coming because the music changed to cool blues music, which was funny in itself seeing how the detective saw himself as the super-detective. Actually Darker than Black is a very cool series all round. Just watch some of the fights when Hei has the mask on and tell me this show isn’t one of the flashiest pieces of Japanese anime around. And watch out for the pizza hut advertisements. It's not just Geass!

By the time you’ve reached the last third of this show, you'll love it. It comes up with some of the most amazing stories in its time, the highlight probably being Yin’s double episodes. The effort and thought put into creating the world of Darker than Black is why it shines so much. Contractors are an ingenious invention, with their odd remunerations they have to perform. Every time I see a shooting star, whether it be anime, live-action or real life, thanks to DtB I always think "oh, a contractors' died".

Although it takes a while to warm up to the characters and you'll be hopelessly lost for a while, Darker than Black will suck you into it’s fantastically created world and you will be hooked.

For Starters, it's from Bones; the fact that it's awesome should be anticipated upon learning this fact. It's definitely up there with my favorite Bones anime: Wolf's Rain and Eureka Seven.

Story: The first episode was actually not boring, unlike most animes', for me. So the series is capable of reeling you in fast. The first few episodes actually keep you well informed, thus lacking confusion and resistance. I was only bored along the road and even skipped an episode or two. That's because the anime is intricate (which can be a good thing), and it spent some of the episodes developing characters I didn't really care for. The episodes felt like fillers, as this show isn't precedented by a manga. Towards the end, it really picked and got extremely interesting as it left me missing the show after the conclusion. The ending adds great twist to the story, though it doesn't necessarily serve the fans the "best" ending. This anime has structure and moves at wavelengths; the action moves at a rational pace, unlike those action anime that consistently pound at your face and rape your valuable time.

Animation & Quality: It's clean and solid. The character designs are extremely pleasing. You won't find any sign of laziness. One thing that makes me laugh is the chain of Pizza Huts that show up often. They really appreciate Pizza Hut for sponsoring them.

Music: Absolutely lifting. The two openings are great, but I don't think the second one's sequence is anything special. The first ending song suits the anime well and garners the attention the artist deserves. The insert songs are by Yoko Kanno; she does her usual sound luster flare, but she's had better works.

Overall: Darker Than Black is an impressive anime and although it isn't exciting all the time, it's one of my favorites so far. It's worth watching!

While some reviewers have complained that Darker Than Black seems to be a clone of various other anime of similar genre, I feel that it takes a theme common to many anime - supernatural powers given to humans - and produces a very high-quality story. That is to say, rather than copying from previous anime, I think that it deliberately incorporates elements from them and then uses those elements to make it better.

Animation - consistent and strong. Not the flashiest thing you'll ever see, especially considering the possibilities of the genre its in, but gritty and realistic.

Music - Good. The OP and ED are worth listening to and well-chosen for the series. Not amazing, but so very few songs are, so its fine.

The plot is very well told. Do not expect the most incredibly creative story that was ever told, but it is spun well, with many interesting plot twists, strong character development. It also includes realistic and interesting characters along with underlying themes about morality and war.

Since I have noticed in many recent anime the exact same bland, stock characters being shown over and over in what would otherwise have been a good story, Darker than Black was a breath of fresh air. No bland clumsy ditzy female leads, no wishy-washy shallow male protagonists. Each character's voice is powerful, unique, and makes a strong impression which echoes in you even after the anime is over. And to me, that is what an excellent story is all about.

Overall I like DtB and it definitely ranks as one of my favorite animes in 2007.

Music : I loved all the songs, opening songs were fast paced and ending were soothing which totally satisfies me :)

Plot: It revolves around contractors who have special powers, but usually have to do something they don't like after they utilize those powers. It's quite creative and I like the mysteries that were in place almost in the whole series, makes you want to watch the next episode immediately.

Characters: Well developed, most of the main characters got their little side stories that I really liked.

Animation: A little weird for me, and that was why I didn't give a higher rating for DtB :P

Overall: Definitely a show to catch! :)

As much as I would have liked to give Darker than Black a higher rating, the multitude of problems within the series forces a low score. I did have high hopes for DtB as, from what I've read, the series was supposed to be pretty good.

Highlights:

-The animation was pretty good. DtB's animation doesn't blow you away, but the animation was very consistent. I did like the character designs for most of the characters in DtB too.
-I really liked the idea behind the super powered humans. The Contractors, who are the people with special powers, can't utilize their powers without consequences. Some contractors have to smoke, while others drink beer. The contractors apparently also had different thought processes when making decisions. All decisions would be considered only with logic, without bringing emotions into play.
-It was just fun to see what new powers would show up every couple weeks. Sometimes the powers would be unoriginal, but sometimes, the powers would be highly original.

Lows:

-The story was overly convoluted. The writers seemed to try to make a high complex story, but ended up failing because not enough was answered. DtB's story brings up so many questions throughout the series, but leaves you with more questions when the series ends. It's as if the writers only wanted to answer the easy questions, but all the important questions were left to you to answer on your own.
-Most of the series was filled with what feels like filler episodes, which the writers seemed to try to enrich the main characters with. The main story probably could have taken only 13 or so episodes to accomplish what the 25 episodes accomplished.

Er...:

-I can't tell if it's because I got a bad translation of DtB, but I had a lot of questions still after the last episode. I don't remember getting an explanation on multiple basic aspects of the series.

I did enjoy watching DtB, but the series had too many problems. I wouldn't exactly recommend this to anyone because of DtB's problems, but if you're interested in super powers, a pretty cool main character, and new villains of the week, DtB might be for you.

Darker than Black is a dime a dozen in several ways. Half the series is filler and features a "monster of the week" formula. The main character dresses dark, and tries to spit out cool one-liners when he's in costume but as a regular human he is nice and clumsy. If you've seen Shakugan no Shana, Bleach, Cowboy Bebop, etc, then you've seen Darker than Black.

It sets up a good premise to start with. A big wall envelopes Tokyo and a few other parts of the world and the sky is replaced with something else. There are many superhuman people running around unbeknownst to the general public. There are three reasons why I don't like this story. The fact that the public doesn't notice a whole community living right beside them (definitely more then tens of thousands) is unbelievable. I have a hard time believing the public is so mentally retarded as to not notice a guy flying in the middle of a crowded street. The second reason is the anime does not cultivate any sort of continuity in its plot. I think occasional breaks from the plot is fine but when you jump from killing a former comrade to two episodes about finding a cat to another two episodes about an amateur yakuza the plot gets bogged down. The last reason is the comedy and fight scenes are mediocre at best.

The characters were bland. You could throw them into Shakugan no Shana, or Bleach and they would fit right in (which says something about those anime as well). There's nothing really unique about their powers or their personalities. What’s even worse is that many of the powers are cheap rip-offs of X-men. Guy who freezes with a touch; a lady who can generate a storm; sound familiar? The main hero is underwhelming as well. He gets hyped up as the most ferocious and powerful amongst his kin but he comes off as simply a tazer with legs. All the episodes with him landing the coup de grâce are disappointing.

This anime is a clone of others in its genre. It has sub-par characters with powers that are underwhelming. It doesn't deviate from the template that made Bleach and Shakugan no Shana. Watch this anime if you are an avid fan of action anime genre. Personally, I would rather re-watch Shakugan no Shana.

After a few articles about this anime I became intrigued and decided to watch it and I'm glad I did.

Story 9/10
Basically the story is about a thing/place called Hell's Gate and contractors, people with special powers that were obtained because of the Hell's Gate. The story focuses on finding out what exactly Hell's Gate is and what is its connection with the contractors. The storyline is basically divided into many smaller arcs that take 1-2 episodes to run through. The overall flow of the story is good although the main storyline doesn't really pick up until after the halfway point, which then leads up to the conclusion. The ending is okay for me, although it doesn't answer all the questions. I think it still gave somewhat of a satisfying conclusion while having the possibility of a second season

Characters 10/10
Now this is the part of the anime that I really liked specifically the contractors and their powers. Aside from their powers they have to do something in exchange for using them (thus the contractor name). This was one of the biggest draws that kept me watching as I found myself waiting for the next contractor so I could see what powers he has as well as how he pays for it. Seeing someone break his fingers just so he use his abilities is quite a sight. The main characters were developed well and were all given sufficient screen time through flashbacks of their past and what led them to become what they currently are except for Mao. I specifically liked Yin's story and how her relationship with Hei developed. She looked so cute when she used her finger to form a smile for the first time.

Music 9/10
The opening theme fit well with the action and dark theme of the anime, the closing theme also is good although the themes were nothing special and didn't really get my attention too much.

Animation 8/10
Nothing special here but the animation was well done. There are a right amount of action scenes and all of them are good. The art is good also although I couldn't shake the feeling that Amber was a carbon copy of C.C. from Code Geass, but I liked both of them so who am I to complain.

Overall what I got was an exciting and enjoyable action anime that had the story and characters to keep me going until the end. I highly recommend watching it.

Darker than Black is definitely one of the better action anime that came out this year. It is not without its flaws, but it is a very entertaining watch none-the-less.

Just off the bat I have to say that when I saw words like “contractor" and “heaven/hell’s gate" I thought this would be some supernaturally driven show like D. Grey Man. Thankfully that was not the case; you won’t find angels fighting for earth and devils handing out contracts to power hungry individuals in this anime. The show’s basis for the super human abilities of the contractors definitely smells a lot more scientific and even extraterrestrial.

Even the abilities themselves are rather different that your run of the mill anime super powers. They’re more in-line with for example the abilities of the X-Men with one major twist. Each contractor basically suffers from a very advanced form of OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder) forcing them to repeat a certain habit after each usage of their ability. These habits range from mundane acts like eating eggs or kissing someone to downright sadistic like drinking human blood or dislocating your own fingers. This gives a more human face to the otherwise seemingly battle hungry contractors as you see them struggle with the weight of their habits.

The action in the show is fast paced and very fun to watch. The storylines themselves are broken into two episode mini-arcs with everything leading up to the finale which turns out to be the biggest downside to this anime. The ending does close up this particular story nicely however it fails to offer any answers to the bigger questions of the show, like what exactly the Heaven/Hell’s gate are or how did the contractors get their powers. This is a shame because at least to me finding these answer was the main drive behind following the story. This does open up the door for a second season which is always a welcomed promise for a good anime, but it takes a lot away from the value of the first season.

This is definitely a good show with unfortunately a rather major shortcoming; but as apparent from my score I would still recommend it to anyone in the mood for excellent action, interesting characters and a little bit of mystery. An 8 out of 10 for Darker than Black.

This is one awesome show that kept me wanting to watch more and more. It seemed a little dark at first(maybe because of the name), but I believe that any anime fan can watch this.

I really liked the concepts and the storyline of Darker Than Black. I like how these contractors have powerful abilities but they are limited because they have to pay for it. It just makes the fight scenes all the more interesting. The storyline pretty much keeps you in the dark for most of the ride while making references to key words, but in the end it explains itself so that's something I can't argue about.

The music was great. I liked the jazzy-typed theme of the background music. I also liked the two opening songs, which are awesome fast paced rock songs.

The animations was very consistent. I did not find any major flaws with it and I thought the colors really portrayed the atmosphere well.

There were various characters from the dark knight team to the justice league(not their real names) and it always gave a different perspective to what was going on. Hei was awesome. I loved how he played a normal weak human being during the day, but a badass contractor at night. And although some characters seemed emotionless, there was a reason for it and I found it really touching when they started showing emotion.

All in all Darker than Black was a great anime with great characters, great music, great action, and a great but somewhat sluggish storyline, and in the end a great anime that I'm glad I watched.

This anime was only recommended to me by a friend, and I must say I'm glad I watched it. Its not only unique and interesting, but it also has a whole lot of other good points such as:

- it makes you appreciate other genres of anime (I'm not really a fan of sci-fi, but this anime made me like it a whole lot better).
- the story was so damn intense, with a lot of twists that make you wonder whats going to happen next. It can keep you hooked until you finished it.
- The flow of the story was just right, it wasn't too fast nor too slow. The ending was also just right, although you can't help but wish that Hei and Misaki end up together someday.
- The characters were all unique. They fit the story just fine, and there were no extras: everyone almost had an important role to play. The character development was also good, in any case.
- The BGM was great, as well as the songs. I also loved the animation, they made each character unique, especially the Contractors.

To be honest, this anime deserves a 10, but since it doesn't make my "anime to be watched over and over again" list, I'd have to take off a point. This is a great anime though, and not to be missed.

If people all of a sudden gained powers, the South America disappeared mysteriously and a big wall was built in Tokyo to keep you don't know what Darker Than Black could easily be considered a story based on real facts.

Don't let all the fantasy that appears in this anime make you think that a story like that is a complete absurd. If, by any chance, people could really disable the gravity effect or if it was possible to make people burn with just a look, secret organizations, hired assassins and agencies designed to take care of that kind of matter could easily become reality.

This is a fiction with consequences that tend to reality, even in the fight scenes. The fight scenes are usually short. Although short, very real. Although real, make a very good use of the universe "special powers" can provide.

Plot: 10 - This one is good, although it requires attention to not let anything out.

Drawings: 10 - The drawings are clear, nothing to complain about.

Music: 10 - Special attention in this one. The combination between the melodies and the scenes is perfect.

Characters: 10 - They were made very well, each one has it's own reasons to do what they are doing. (Warning: You will fall in love with Amber.)
