Synopsis :
Japan's space agency, based on the Solomon Islands, has been trying to prepare a program for manned space flight for a long time now. But after meeting with failure after failure, their sponsors have announced the cancellation of the program in six months time. Determined to keep the project alive at any cost, the director has decided to used more reliable old engines that, unfortunately, are a lot weaker than their "explosive" new models. And, refusing to be turned to just skin and bones to save weight, their only astronaut candidate has escaped!
Enter Yukari Morita, a young school girl who is searching for her father, the man who abandoned her mother during their honeymoon 17 years ago. Searching for him in the islands she accidentally stumbles upon the would-be astronaut and the people searching for him, and her lithe frame has caught their eye. In return for helping her look for their father in the Solomon Islands Yukari is tricked into a "very simple" part-time job: becoming the SSA's new astronaut candidate!

Rocket Girls is a silly, fun show that more focused on humor then reality. It's primarily the story of Yukari Morita, a pretty teenage girl, who in searching for her father, ends up being recruited as an astronaut. The space agency needs someone very light in order to save on weight. They promise her that if she agrees to help them as an astronaut, they will find her father for her. Shortly afterwards, she finds her father herself, as well as a sister she never knew she had. Her journey from reluctant astronaut to willing participant and the friends she makes along the way, is what the story is really about.
The whole weight issue is so silly it doesn't bear repeating. But it makes for some very cute astronauts which of course is the whole point. Young, pretty girls going into space.
The music is beautiful, the animation is superb. Overall a very well done show, with girls that make it worth watching. At only 12 episodes, it really did feel too short, and yet it was probably the perfect length. Any shorter and not enough story would have developed, any longer and it might have felt drawn out. Still I enjoyed the show enough I wouldn't have minded a few more episodes.
One area I have to take off for is plot. The whole thing is of course ludicrous. Starting with the idea of sending teenage girls into space due to weight constraints, allowing them to risk their life in an untried and unproven maneuvers. Once, when Yukari is trapped in space, her Sister somehow manages to get launched into space, rendezvous with her, and save her. This was the only point during the show where I felt it went beyond silliness into outright stupidity. Apart from that episode, I was able to suspend my disbelief for the rest of the series, and just sit back and enjoy the ride.
Altogether a very fun and enjoyable series. I recommend it if you are looking for a bit of humor, and an evening or 2 of fun. Certainly watching cute young girls dancing around in bikinis doesn't hurt either.
