'Tis a funny thing, potential. Princess Resurrection has a fair bit of the stuff, but it fails to capitalise on it properly.

With our hero, Hiro - a not-very-forceful personality - surrounded by attractive women and contracted to serve the story's heroine (the eponymous Princess), there's obvious potential for a harem-comedy show. But while the studio occasionally hints at romance, it's never really developed. And there are attempts at comedy, but it's actually rare for this show to manage to be funny. Most of the characters are not developed beyond one or two simple and often cliched traits, even in the twenty-five episodes that the studio have to work with.

The show follows a monster of the week format (literally), with the Princess and her bodyguards facing off against werewolves, vampires, enraged fish-men, overzealous medical staff et cetera, et cetera. There's obvious potential for some scintillating and gory action, in a variety of settings and against a variety of opponents. Sadly, this potential is wasted by unimaginative and low-quality animation; the animation for this show smacks of a low, low, low budget. The studio can be creative in disguising it, but there's only so much one can do to paper over the cracks and I did find myself physically wincing once or twice at the quality. Furthermore, the potential for gore offered by the profusion of axes, chainsaws, morningstars and other sharp objects is rather lost - possibly because the content has been toned down from the original manga to make it acceptable for TV.

One good thing about the action is the Princess' 'killshot of the week' as she dispatches whichever eldritch horror is threatening her, usually using a particularly large or inventive weapon. Indeed, the character of the Princess is probably the shows' best asset, with her arsenal of weapons, her unshakeable sang-froid and her deadpan humour - humour which is one of the few really funny elements, and one which doesn't get enough screen-time.

The music is unremarkable, as is the voice-acting. In fact, they're both so unremarkable that I have nothing more to say on the subject. What I will mention, however, is the ending credits sequence. With considerably better animation, it's a superb tongue-in-cheek visual riff on gothic/horror motifs. If only such quality was reflected in the actual content of the show.

Turning to that most subjective of traits, 'enjoyment', I must admit that I didn't absolutely hate this show. In fact, part of me did enjoy the ludicrous nature of the action: where else can you see a girl in a black, gothic dress and a tiara riding the roof of a duck-shaped pedalo and fending off a horde of mutant fish-men with a large hammer? But that's not good enough for Princess Resurrection to redeem itself. I can't recommend it unless you're a diehard fan of the manga. A sad tale of potential in the show's setting, characters and action, ultimately wasted.

Well! Time for another boooring romance anime with lame plot twists, right? What's this? Difference? No way! Monster Princess isn't really some lame romance anime with a spoilt brat of a main character? Please, my knees are weak from the shock. Now, as I digress from that rant, Monster Princess is DEFFINATELY worth checking out. I'll break it down into chunks to explain why.

Plot:
How many people are tired of the usual boy-saves-girl, girl-loves-guy, guy-becomes-crazy-strong plot? Well, rejoice fellow anime watchers! Monster Princess, also known as Princess Ressurection, seperates itself from other anime. Allow me to explain why. At the start, it looks like the typical princess-type storyline. The main hero (if that's what you want to call him), Hiro (A pun!~), is invited to come live with his elder, and busty, sister at a house she has been invited to serve at as a full-time maid. On his way, he runs into Hime-- on a mountain of furniture and luggage carried by a little child! Hiro is fascinated by the blond beauty, but when Hime runs into danger as some cross beams fall down, he relies on instinct and rushes to push her out of the way, at the cost of his own life. As he falls unconscious, she whispers to him "What a fine corpse..." In the next few minutes, Hiro Hiyorimi is now dead. In the morgue, his body is put into storage and the doctors walk away, saddened by their inability to save him from his fatal injury. However, Hiro's corpse is not alone in that room... Hime has come to see him. She then holds out a brilliant flame on her finger and puts it inside him... granting him semi-immortality! Hiro is now what humans would call.. a zombie. Continous interesting plot developments and some very entertaining humor, all mixed with a serious and involving storyline builds Monster Princess into the 4.5 stars it deserves.

Music:
Wow. Just... wow. The opening theme is a brilliant Halloween-esque piece that you absolutely must hear, and the ending theme is.. and the songs in the anime... They're all terrific. All of them. I haven't heard this kind of a music soundtrack since .hack//SIGN and .hack//ROOTS.

Design:
The anime doesn't dwell too much on bright colors, but the design is very crisp and well proportioned (except on a certain female with red hair and Hiro's sister... Those can't be real <_<). The colors fit the anime type: dark, yet gentle. The design isn't over-the-top, but its very fitting for the nature of the anime itself.

Summary:
Kick. Ass. Watch Monster Princess yourself and see why I've rambled on about this for too long. Seriously, this anime is a terrific change from all that slow drama. The action is on-and-off, but there are some really cool parts including the Invisible Man. The episodes seem to trade off between plot building and rapid fighting and loyalty building. If you skip a single episode, you'll miss out on a lot. Also, there is hinting at a romance to become, but don't get your hopes too high. In half a dozen episodes, the closest thing to romance they've had has been... well, you'll just have to find out for yourself. <3
