A very creative series that is nothing like any anime I've ever seen. The biggest emphasis of the series is on the Animation Style and Story. And with a 7/10 the anime did a good job. Watch this anime if you've enjoyed its predecessor Ayakashi: Japanese Classic Horror.
The Animation style is one of the most unique and is the main reason that the Medicine Seller was given a new series. It is not realistic but very artistic. The stories are generally quite gruesome so instead of showing the act in its most realistic form, the anime opted for something along the line of a metaphor. You see something that resembles the original event (Just think of what an unsafe abortion would look like and the anime used something that resembles that act).
At times I think they take the animation style too far. There are scenes where the anime seems overly psychodelic. The scenery changes far too dramatically, so it confused me and destroyed the pace of the story. For instance, in the "Umi Bozu" chapter, when the Monk is revealing his past, the scene would jump from the deck of the ship to the hull and back again. Secondly, the character designs are a love/hate thing. I thought the characters were a bit bizarre looking and, though they don't hamper the overall experience, I would expect some people to be turned off by the designs.
The stories are gruesome. I can say for sure if these stories were done in extra realistic animes they would be banned on TV. They are well written but the one big flaw I found was in the storytelling. I had to watch the anime twice before I understood the quality of the stories.
Overall, an alright anime; there were no character development since all but the main character only show up for at most 3 episodes and the medicine seller has no personality beyond a creepy smile. The stories are great but I recommend that the viewer be patient since I found myself lost when watching this anime at first.
