Gundam 00 didn’t quite top Gundam Seed for me… because to me SEED had a more interesting story and stronger cast (until Destiny, or course). But Gundam 00’s probably the first Gundam series to maintain almost perfect animation throughout… and I really enjoy it for that. And they didn’t recycle the idea of power overwhelming weapons too, I’m grateful for that. And Sumeragi’s a lot hotter than Murrue.

The reason Gundam 00 didn’t quite have such a powerful storyline is probably because it it set up to have a second season, and there are many clues on the way. Unlike other Sunrise productions, like Code Geass which hastily changed (and screwed) the first season’s ending just to include a lame second season, Gundam 00 didn’t (want to) make it so epic that the second season would try too hard to top that (like what happen to GSD). Gundam 00 had the best continuity into the second season among all Sunrise production I’ve watched.

Unfortunately, Sunrise can’t seem to kick their habit of using coincidences and lousy decisions by the characters for the storyline… usually for something big. Like there’s a whole arc of them getting out of a grave situation, when they walked right into it knowing it anyway. And every time the main character’s gonna get killed, they were saved by coincidence and chance that someone appeared and managed save their arses. You know, it gets really tiring after the first couple of times, and it’s the same reason why I hated several parts of Code Geass.

Of course, when everything’s produced in super-high quality, people tend not to notice these small flaws… but it just sticks out like a sore thumb to me. Most of the female casts are really cute too, but too bad most of them had pretty small roles in the story.

Amongst the songs, I only really liked the first OP, Daybreak’s Bell. The rest are good, but probably not good enough for my ipod I guess.

Aside the bit of the storyline that annoys me… Gundam probably needs some new kind of storyline for me to score it higher.

Plot/Concept: Fairly Good
Story Style: Very Good
Audio/ Visual: Excellent!
Value: 8

Gundam has never been this engaging..ever.
I'm not the biggest Gundam fan, but I own close to a hundred Pla-mo in all sizes, and I have watched 6 of the series and played a ton of Super Robot Wars games, and I can only say this is by far the best Gundam experience I have ever had. Especially compared to 3 other Gundam being shown simultaneously over here.
So far, I have watched a total of 4 episodes. The series once again takes up a very serious tone toward war. The setting: a futuristic world plague with the usual arms race, and systematic oppression about to be turned upside down by a rogue organization employing Gundams to rid world's superpower off their might.
The human cast is as generic as they come: a band of boys with war torn past take up piloting the Gundam (They're called Gundam-meister), with a supporting crew made of the usual hot lady captain and generic ship operators.
What really set the series apart is the mecha cast, designed with much more thoughts than how to slap as many guns as possible onto them. The mobile suits for once seems like real robots, for example the Chinese/Soviet army's mobile suit cruise through the air on clunky fold-out wings. The protagonist's mother ship is a smaller ship with what seems like 4 hangars, each capable of housing only 1 mobile suit. It's very charming to see things designed to reflect their functions.
One of my favorite aspect of the show is that the skirmishes are much smaller in scale compared to other Gundams. Similar to earlier part of SEED, the fights so far takes place between only 2 or 3 mobile suits at a time, adding to the realism aspect. There is also much more planning involved in each battle, rather than the usual one-Gundam-army-run-and-gun favored in the likes of Wings.
The visual is impeccable--like I said, the design is near flawless, and the animation is amazingly smooth throughout.
The audio, however, is an entirely different story. It's most likely just me, but damn, I hate the OP and ED. There is a very minimal use of BGMs compared to other Gundams. And I can't comment on character's voice because I'm stuck with the dubbed version since I'm in Thailand. (They have a pretty good cast going for the dub here though, which is a good thing.)

This is the best Gundam title I have seen to date.

Although many mecha series focus on the theme of war, there are very few which portray it successfully and realistically.

Gundam 00 is one of those which does an excellent job. Not only is there tons of action, but also the characters are intricate and well thought out. None of the main characters are shallow or foolish, and they understand full well the consequences of what they are doing.

The setting is very complex and interesting. One can tell that a great deal of thought went into developing it - the three power blocs are based on existing political structures, with numerous smaller entities and special interests affecting everything. This allows the anime to create a much more realistic and complex setting than, say, Gundam seed's two sides going to outright war with each other.

Initially, the first few episodes weren't anything special. It was difficult to tell the four main characters apart at first - they were very complex and difficult to understand, and it didn't help that the anime kept on throwing seemingly irrelevant character interactions into the plot. However, as the anime went on and you started to understand all the main characters, all the intricate threads of the plot began to coalesce and the anime went from a place for silly mecha battles to a strong depiction of the realities, motivations, and consequences of war.

The first OP was good - I did not think it overly remarkable, but my friend thought it was the best of the series. The first ED and the second OP, however, were truly excellent, and I enjoyed the second ED as well. I thought the second ED was very well done, not just because the song was good, but how it gave you a glimpse of the lives of the pilots outside the combat situations that the anime had them in.
