Sigh... What a big disappointment Minami Ke Okawari turned out to be. This review is going to be pretty much the same as every other review for this anime. Minami-Ke Okawari was absolutely terrible if in comparison to the first season. If it weren't for the first season I probably would've considered this anime decent a one. The first was so much better so I got myself hyped up over it. Unfortunately this was a mistake on my part, I was nothing but disappointed to the point of tears and violent outbursts.

The story is another pointless one and, even if you know it’s a pointless anime and you put yourself into zombie mode or something you’re still going to be irritated with this. You see even with a "no plot" anime there are still elements there that keep you hooked in. The comedic moments are mostly just fair attempts. Granted I laughed a certain amount of times but, it's not like I choked on my food or spat up my drink. The calm yet fun filled environment just disappeared so it pretty much turned into something you don't feel a part of. So therefore you distance yourself from the anime, and begin watching it while doing something else.

The animation has changed in a big way. In the first season they had certain things that made the anime unique. Those things in this season disappeared and became irritating. What the hell is up with filling the place with black blobs? I swear to god the studio just got freaking lazy it’s the most annoying thing in animation history and, this black blob thing isn't something you can grow accustomed to. Well... I couldn't anyways. They took away the two elements that made comedic moments stand out and those moments are the tear drop mouth and serious faces. These tiny little things make such a huge difference, and yet they messed up and took them both out.

The characters are the only things that haven't been tampered with. The three sisters are still there and, there all lovable. The chemistry between them is still pretty much the same however, it fails due to the missing elements and the fact that environment doesn't feel like the environment created in the first season. The sisters feel like cheap clones with some serious problems.

The music... O.K music isn't exactly necessary when it comes to this kind of anime. The OP and ED are so wrong for this anime, it’s not cheery and, it doesn't suit the anime in any way.

To sum this all up.... on its own not too shabby but, compared to the first season it's terrible. I don't recommend this but; if you’re a fan of the first season of Minami-Ke then I can't really stop you. Just don't expect too much.

Why? Why do they have to switch studios? Why do they have to do this ?!
And the new studio doing season2 practically ruined Minami-ke! I might have given this a higher rating if this was “just some other slice-of-lifes? and not a “continuation to Minami-ke?.

Animation/Graphics/Design :60%
What happened to the cheery, bright atmosphere ? The simple but cute and attractive essence of the original series ? Gone ! All gone !
What replaced these lovable signatures are just distasteful :
1.)Lack of the “close-up on serious faces?
2.)Decrease in the showing of the trademark “tear-drop shape? mouth
3.)The omitting of details of the unimportant characters (“background characters?) is already bad enough, now they are produced as mere “black shadows?, making the overall aesthetics worse, further degenerating the initial elements of “bright and happy? mood. If anything else, those “black shadows? actually made several scenes seem “ominous?.

The design for the characters (during season1) is also more agreeable with me.I really miss the graphics design. One of the factors that captured me in the beginning of season1, was the brilliance of its simplicity. It was what gave a very “homely? feel.

Story/Development:70%
Less hilarious, but still decent and worth the watch. Some scenes were genuinely touching, especially the ending, which is predictable but still good. Okawari seem to concentrate more on drama. Not that it’s a bad thing. As said, what’s bad is that they could have made it good by retaining the style in season1.Apart from the graphics/animation style, Okawari also has lesser of those plain simple but hilarious gags.

Music:72%
The music for OP is nice BUT not very suitable for Minami-ke. What happened to those cheery OP and ED ?!The animation for the OP was also very “un-Minami-ke?.

To end of, I’ll conclude with saying that there are way too many things in Okawari that just made it so “un-Minami-ke?. The irony is that, in season1, despite its declaration of “please do not expect much? I actually ended up enjoyed it a lot, ending up in expecting much from Okawari… …I guess the only way to actually enjoy Okawari is to not think of it as a continuation to season1, but as a slice-of-life series on its own.

personal overall rating:77%

Second season, different studio… why? I always thought that these two studios are on competition to see who can make a better anime out of a lousy manga. Well if that is true, the first season wins, hands down. It’s kind of obvious anyway, no fansub actually wants to do this properly.

I won’t say it’s actually bad, but seeing such quality after the first season is really disheartening. What’s more, the second season actually have better story (materials) to work on, but the mood that the first season has developed is gone. Well, maybe I’ll say changed, but it didn’t change to something that I really liked. It seems that the only good thing is that Kana tend to pose sexy, although she gone from crazy to creepy-crazy.

Minami-ke Okawari, unlike the first season, is a very normal comedy, and if you’re every critical of jokes, you won’t find it funny half the time. Still, they have pretty interesting characters with unique personalities, and the way Kana creates all those situations is still pretty good. The series ending is really very predictable though.

What didn’t appreciate: the black background characters, the annoying exclamation mark, comic sans, and particularly the opening and ending themes.

The opening and ending themes are another huge disappointment. Unlike the cheerful style they used in season 1, although the ending song itself was somewhat good, both of them didn’t capture the feel of the show. It felt like drama. Sure, season 2’s a lot more drama than the first, but they didn’t really capture the drama feel in the story anyway.

Animation wasn’t as good, there are some choppy scenes, and it wasn’t as detailed. And Kana has a great voice work, but the scripting made her ramble too much to bring out her good voice.

Oh, and I actually liked Hosaka. Now he’s a prick with barely any screen time… and where is Natsuki?

It wasn’t bad, but I’m not even gonna recommend it to people who watched the first season.

Minami-ke Okawari, is an anime with problems. Its a continuation of Minami-ke, as outstanding slice-of-life comedy, centered around the lives of 3 sisters. However it was released, almost immediately following the conclusion of the first. Meaning that it was made, by a different studio, and at the same time the first was being made. Because of this, there are serious discrepancies between the 2. When I first started watching Okawari, after watching the first installment of Minami-ke I was, to put it mildly, disappointed. The first season was funny, and well done, the animation, the characters, the whole thing was terrific. I had no complaints about the show at all. From the story to the music.

Okawari, the second season, when compared to the first series just doesn't stack up. Not in just 1 or 2 ways, but in a lot of different ways. From the ED, to the horrible black characters they use as placeholders, to the lack of serious faces the sisters make, to the way they did those faces. There was so much lacking in comparison to the first series. Having said this however, In other ways, Okawari is really terrific. Particularly if you enjoyed the first series. While perhaps not as fresh and original as the first, at the same time, it managed to maintain the humor, and continue it. While the characters look subtly different, they are the same manic characters, done by the same Seiyuus that I loved in the original series. I just wish they had contracted the original studio to make 26 episodes, rather then 13.

Overall, I definitely recommend Okawari, particularly if you watched the first series. If you haven't watched either yet, then watch that one first. I give this series a great rating, entirely because the story, characters, and humor was so outstanding. I'm a fan of the slice-of-life shows in general. This is a great follow up to the original. Though not as good, it nevertheless is extremely enjoyable. I wouldn't mind another season of this endearing, and funny trio and their friends. Hopefully though, it will all be done by the original studio, and not broken up like this one was.
