Storyline wise, it is natural that the plot isn’t as complex as that of the series, since it is only the length of 3 episodes. There is a distinct upgrade in the animation quality, which is definitely welcoming. Battle scenes also get major boost and we get to see more of the side cast show off their various Otome abilities. And oh, they upped the ecchi level too (Fancy that!). However, the music seems to be less impressive, despite the fact that OVA releases are supposed to be of higher quality. Perhaps Yuki Kajiura not being the composer is the reason why.

Admittedly, an OVA of only 3 episodes length is way too short, making it seem like this OVA is more of teaser for fans who can’t get enough of the Otome series – which no doubt, it is. With that it is fair to say that this is recommended only to the die-hard Mai-Otome fans, because S.ifr in itself does not have much to offer for plot, appealing only to those who are already familiar with the Otome-verse are in need of some sort of omake. After all, it’s only 3 episodes so I know I cannot expect an elaborate prequel similar to Ga-Rei: Zero covering how Yomi ended up the way she is in the manga. S.ifr thus gets a rather mediocre rating of 6/10 precisely because of this reason. Anyway, I don’t mind banking on a proper series to be made on this OVA in the future. :)

It must be genetic if Arika Yumemiya's mother gets sexually molested the same way she does. When watching this anime I yearn for the fan service because I cannot stand the story and characters. The fan service for me is a psychological form of escapism from the main story. I cannot recommend this anime.

Although not as bad as School Days OVA this OVA comes close. We have a plot that shows every sign of being a rushed work. We know nothing of the reasoning behind why Sifr, the main heroine, needs to die. Yes, she's the product of a broken vow but what is the content of the vow? What exactly did Garderobe and the kingdom of Windbloom agree to? What are the benefits to each side? The necessary background is not given. The audience is left stranded to understand actions chosen by Garderobe that seem extreme and inexplicable. Secondly, the story didn't even bother pay homage to who would be the father of Nina and Arika. The whole point of this OVA was to give the Mai Otome fans some story behind the births of Nina and Arika. Therefore relationships formed between those characters would help this series a long way. Lastly, chemistry between the characters beyond breast fondling and blasting each other to bits and pieces would also be appreciated.

Another problem is the dialogues given by the characters are of a very poor quality. I reserve special hatred of the soliloquy given at the end of the third episode by Sifr when she is trying to persuade the head of Garderobe from killing her. It, to my irritation, seems to have worked when normally that type of response usually calls for the character to be drawn and quartered.

Sunrise disappoints me. I cannot understand their penchant for poor OVAs. Endless Waltz, Mai Otome Zwei, and now Mai Otome Sifr… perhaps it's just my luck that I keep going for the ones that just screams rip-off.

Hence 5/10

There wasn’t much material worked on, as there are only 3 episodes. Almost none of the characters in the Mai-Otome and Zwei was present, and only the Otome concept, a few of the names, some of the gem powers and Rena can link you back to the original series (Rena is Arika’s mom). This likely meant that these OVAs are just to extend the Otome merchandise by prolonging the profitability lifespan of Otome products as well as introducing a whole new bunch of characters for merchandising.

There was hardly any storyline. I could summaries the plot in thirty words, but I’ll keep this spoiler-free. I was expecting to see the end of this OVA progressing into Arika’s story by killing Rena, but that didn’t happen. S.ifr is just one of Rena’s stories long before the story of the TV series.

It ain’t bad; it’s somewhat enjoyable although the way they delivered the fan-service is pretty cheap. Also, it seemed a bit illogical to create such a strong foe to match Rena’s powers.

There wasn’t much else to talk about. The animation is still pretty good and maintained the quality of Zwei. The ending songs "Finality Blue" and "Heart All Green" are actually really good songs, but I guess it’s hard to leave an impression in people as it’s only used once.

Recommended only if you liked the Mai-Otome series.
