A very interesting vampire story. The class between vampires was new and original.

Story: 8/10
Even if the plot was dark, the first scenes of this anime are very refreshing. The class between vampires such as the pure-blooded, the nobles and Level E were very original compared to other vampire stories. They also have different powers according to what class they belong to.

Animation: 8/10
The character designs are on the top, but there's a little problem in their movements. I find it very stiff and the fighting scenes were not that great. But still, they manage to end it up with a good quality anime.

Characters: 9/10
Very powerful set of characters. Yuki is so cute and Zero is so cool. Not to mention the students in the night class and the other vampire hunters that are roaming in the school. Chairman Cross is very funny.

Music: 8/10
The BGMs are very appropriate, with a dark and mystic sound surrounds every scene. Their opening is one of my favorites.

Overall: 8/10
A very good anime to watch and it worth your time watching it.

Adapted from the popular manga of the same title. I haven't read the manga myself, I do heard that the series receive a lot of flak from manga fans... So while I can't tell whether it's a good adaptation or not, I do rather enjoy the series.

Being a shoujo series, Vampire Knight doesn't seem to have a main storyline, or anything that would foreshadow how the story is going to progress. Basically it's all about the complicating relationship between bo-wielding-prefect Yuuki, gun-toting vampire hunter Zero and pure blood vampire Kaname... And they all study in the same school.

While this sounds kind of a boring set-up for a shoujo story, the relationship between the three is pretty interesting particularly because how Yuuki is a much more active character as compared tmany series with the same genre. Yuuki's pretty cute too, which is one of the main selling point for me. Oh, and as a added bonus, there a little bit of action as well... Kaname's powers are whack.

I liked how the animation uses strong colors and detailed frames, but it's obvious that they didn't put that much effort into the flow as throughout the series, the animation uses a lot of still frames. The music are pretty good, but I got bored of them quickly.

Admittedly it's nothing really worth catching, but it's still something that wil keep you entertained for a while. Looking forward to the second season.

Plot/Concept: Average
Story Style: Great!
Audio/Visual: Good
Value: 7

Vampire Knight is a difficult anime to rate, not because its hard to do so, but because as someone who has read the manga, I keep wanting to read things into the anime that aren't there. Part of the story simply aren't explained, and unless you've read the manga, you don't really have the full story. And you won't unless you watch the next series as well.

I have to give the animators credit though. They did a lot of things right, and only a few things wrong. And some of those, as I said above, weren't really their fault. To start with, the animation, the atmosphere of the story, the character designs, the music, were all well done. OP and ED were both excellent, though I liked the OP a bit better, the ED artwork was terrific. However, despite the amazing artwork, the terrific designs, good voice acting, despite all these things, this is not an outstanding show. I'd rate it good, but not great.

The reasons it falls short, have more to do with the story itself. So many things are left unexplained, and in only 13 episodes, they weren't able to really delve into the characters, their motivations and background. We couldn't understand, without reading the manga, why the characters were doing what they were doing. Everything seemed very superficial.

Overall, while I enjoyed the series, and will likely end up watching the sequel, it doesn't live up to the hype that I heard surrounding it. As I said above, it was good, but certainly not great. There were several other series that came out around the same time, that were far superior. Give it a look though if you like the manga. It follows the story closely enough, that you won't be disappointed.

Giving a score for this is quite difficult. I cannot say that I enjoyed Vampire Knight, though I'm not saying that this anime is bad. There are a lot of elements in here that make it passable. In fact, there are a couple of good features in here worth mentioning.

It's popular.

Really? It is? Well... that's the impression I received. Anime North 2008 was swarming with girls in Vampire Knight cosplay. Maybe the manga is popular. Perhaps those wanted to jump in with a sparkling 2008 anime costume. Or maybe I just didn't notice it until now? Still, Vampire Knight seemed really popular with the ladies, so I gave it a try. I got through it all. Overall, this anime was "okay", but it wasn't great.

There was little humour. I couldn't find myself laughing in any situation. Sure they'd use some odd faces here and there, usually in involvement with the School Chairperson. It still wasn't funny. Actually, events were quite overly dramatic in the beginning. I don't know how they did that, but they made things excessively dramatic and boring at the same time. Talent.

But it's stylish! Plenty of great art here and there, and there, there! (I'm just being silly here). But just like Faebinder mentions, I really liked the OP and ED as well. Not just the song, but the video sequences. It was almost goth/grunge. Use of blood and morbidity was minimal, just enough to be classy. Hey, maybe Vampire Knight is uberly popular because of the COPIUS AMOUNTS OF BISHIES. They are quite attractive looking, but since the character development was so poor, I didn't romanticize about any of them.

Yes. The characters were quite flat. Every reaction didn't have much of a background to support it. There were also quite the number of characters left to be talked about. But I guess that will be left for Vampire Knight Guilty (the second season). I don't know if I'll watch that, Yuuki certainly looks awesome in that one though.

This series had some good and some bad in it. Certainly watchable.

Artwork: 8/10. Nothing spectacular. Many characters have the same faces. Background is casual. Color choice is good but the animation itself is not fluid. Any action seen is done via flash/cut scenes style.

Music: 10/10. Impressive music. Loved the ending the beginning to the point that I actually downloaded them. The ending is a masterpiece. Intraepisode music is pretty good.

Story: 9/10. Despite the weak setup in school, the story is pretty solid. It's unfortunate that it was done at a highschool level and not some serious not-impossible setup. The story is rich with a lot of background and side themes. It also tailors itself to show the master vampire as the true manipulator, which is capturing the essence of what a master vampire is supposed to be like in a vampire community. 13 episodes were just too abrupt.

Character Design: 7/10. One of the weaknesses of the story is this. With exception of the master vampire, the entire character design was weak. All characters looked similar. You can barely tell girls apart. No serious effort was placed in fleshing out side characters. The villan was weak... came in and disappeared weakly. This needs improvement.

Overall a good story... I loved the music but that was not enough to make me so excited about the series. It's certainly a good series to watch if you like vampire stories. Black Blood Brothers and Hellsing remain a better series.

Bram Stoker’s Dracula became a legend, not simply because of the elements of horror, but also due to the drama and tragic romance so emotionally portrayed within the story. And thus, what sets Vampire Knight apart from the popular mainstream vampire anime is that Knight took on a somewhat different perspective on the ever popular theme. Knight shows that vampire anime aren’t just about blood-fest, killings and flying body parts. They are more than that. As such, I must say that if you’re that thinking this is going to be another action series, similar to Hellsing, then most unfortunately, this is not the show for you. Indeed, this series has minimal fight scenes, as its main focus is on drama and romance.

It is especially moving to see how Yuuki tries her best to help Zero, who is constantly distancing himself from her, as he struggles to resist losing his human instinct and to prevent the Level-E Vampire persona from overtaking him. The pace is slow, but not in a boring manner, as it is progressive in how the story develops, in featuring the sufferings that Zero undergo to maintain his identity as a "human." Admittedly, the plot for this series is not that fantastic (honestly, how much originality can one expect from a vampire show anyway?), and there isn’t much of a plot twist, but the way the story unfolds, is what really made it such a great show. The animation quality is excellent; nice Classical-Gothic art style, with great details, even in the background. And since this is shoujo, we certainly cannot mention the graphics without commenting on the cast full of vampire bishies.

My main complain with this series is the character development, which I find quite lacking. For one thing, Yuuki was a rather typical character. As for Kuran, well, can’t really comment much yet, since his motives are still shrouded in mystery. Zero is no doubt the one who really drives the series, even though Yuuki is the protagonist. Idou appears to be more than just the laid back personal. Hopefully they will explore the personalities of the characters better in season 2. The lack of anything particularly special in the plot and characters are why this series gets only an 8/10.

The music is yet another strong point of this series. It really is the sort that’s being played while watching those Classic Vampire films – really creates the aura and the atmosphere, along with the graphics. The OP as well as the animation for it are also great. The animation for the OP has a nice fantasy feel. While I don’t really enjoy the ED, I can’t deny that it has successfully reflected upon the essence of the series, and the style sort of reminds me of Ali Project (but of course Ali Project is still better hahaha). The way the ED features that "abandoned doll" invoked some sort of sorrowful mood, though it would have been better if they cut down on the "ballet girl" and concentrate more on the "doll".

The ending is very well executed: it gave a satisfying sense of closure to season 1, and at the same time hyped the viewers for season 2. Particularly with the scene with Kuran remarking that all his "pieces are assembled", finally ending the series with the phrase on the screen: the sweet dream has not ended.
Classy and stylish. Certainly look forward to the sequel, Vampire Knight: Guilty.

Personal overall rating:83%
