I watched this anime because it was quite highly ranked for 2008 in AS. but i was horribly disappointed by this show. I wanna keep this review short cos ppl dont like long reviews, so ill try my best, but note that there's ALOT of bad things i have to say about this anime.

1) Characters
most of the characters are lame and have the decision making of a cow. their motives are at best unrealistic, their antics irritating as hell. the main character is the most irritatingly useless EMO kid who develops a suspiciously gay-looking relationship with a mudering pyschopath who tries to kill him and his friends. (if this sounds interesting to u, i assure u, its not!)

since we're talking 5 ninja clans, you'll think that theres a wide variety of enemies and allies with interesting skills. (e.g. basilisk, naruto) but in this show, this is not the case. some are likeable ill admit, but majority are plain and dull.

2)Plot
The pace of the show is so slow i wanted to shoot myself. ive seen many lousy animes but most of them have the decency to end in 13 episodes. this anime drags a boring storyline for a WHOLE 26 EPISODES!!! by episode 10, i was pulling my hair out and wanting to stop watching. maybe i should have.

the story makes little sense. many of the (vaguely interesting) scenarios end unsatisfyingly. as a whole, the plot is not very bad. but the sheer slow pace of the anime makes the experience a excruciating one. i liked the ending though, but it might be because i was relieved that my ordeal was over.

3)Setting
a key ingredient of a good fighting/fantasy(ninja) story is that the world it is set in must be interesting. the viewer must find himself going: "wow, i wish i were a ninja...". in so loving the setting, the viewer immerses himself in it and has a wonderful experience. in Nabari no ou... the world is not the least bit interesting.

4)Fighting/animation
the fighting is repetitive and uninspired. the movement of characters are poorly done. the skills they use are always the same after the first few episodes. if you intend to watch this show for fighting action, dont!

Summary:
i might be biased. but in my opinion, the guy who animated this should be shot. i wont go so far as to say that its not worth watching at all. it is watchable despite all it's shortcomings. but frankly, there are a heap load of animes more worth watching than this. if you do watch it, please be prepared for a trying experience.

If you're looking for an action-packed anime about good guys vs. bad guys and saving the world... please don't even bother trying to watch this. The fights in Nabari no Ou are short and few; there's much more to the story than you see on the surface, and it's more character-driven than anything else.

Story: 7/10 - If you've read the manga beforehand, prepare to be sorely disappointed by the adaptation. Several of the "best" scenes from the manga were excluded, characters were taken out and replaced, etc. On the other hand, if you were to look at the story entirely on its own, it honestly isn't that bad. This is one of the few times where a studio tried to give an anime a conclusive ending while its manga counterpart is still ongoing, and they did a better job of it than many other attempts. I disliked the last arc and the ending wasn't quite what I had in mind, but at least they got the job done. The pacing is slow sometimes, even slice-of-life-esque at certain parts. Whether that's a good or bad thing depends on the person, though.

Characters: 9/10 - Most people start watching this anime thinking it's another ninjas and collecting things series, but that's not the case at all. As said before, Nabari focuses primarily on the characters and how they interact. J.C. Staff came a bit short on this, however. The animators seem to have "forgotten" a few developments, so the characters keep making the same mistakes as before, thus making many watchers annoyed. Still, the character-driven plot isn't something you see every day, so I'll have to give the series some extra points for it. The actual personalities are a hit-or-miss. I loved anti-hero Miharu's devilish yet apathetic attitude toward everything and Yoite's emo angsting (because he actually had his reasons for being emo and angsty), but other people might find them very annoying.

Animation: 6.5/10 - I've always liked J.C. Staff's color palettes, and Nabari is no exception. Some say that the backgrounds look lazy, but it's aesthetically pleasing to me. So, in terms of still images, the artwork is great - but the actual moving animation is a different matter. The fight scenes were animated smoothly and flawlessly in the first couple of episodes, but by about halfway through the show, they disintegrated into constant repeating frames in pseudo-animation that was almost laughable. Whatever budget the animators had in the beginning disappeared too quickly.

Music: 8/10 - The OST isn't bad at all, though I liked it a bit less than most others. Sometimes the bgm didn't totally fit the scene it was played in, while at other times it fit perfectly. Nonetheless, almost all of the compositions are interesting and worth listening to. The OP is extremely catchy - one of the best OP songs of 2008 in my opinion. I loved the first ED, but the second wasn't exactly in my taste.

Overall, not a bad anime. It's not for everyone, but I recommend checking out at least the first few episodes to see if you like it or not. You might be pleasantly surprised.

Firstly, I thought it's all about a ninja show where someone tries to steal a secret scroll to destroy the world, then the hero arises and tries his best to protect the people after learning and getting acknowledged with some amazing skills, and finally the end, but this anime was totally strange. There were some secret scrolls and such, but the hero, well, didn't look like someone you can depend on to save the world. It was totally new for me. Add to it his cold-hearted character.
The story wasn't that amusing. The characters made it somehow interesting, especially when Miharu meets Yoite. It was a little realistic, I mean not every child has the will to fight and become the ruler as suggested to Miharu by his English teacher, Kumohira. Rather than fighting to save the world, Miharu was fighting for something else: this was really the real side of a child who lost his parents at a young age. Yoite's cool acts and his forbidden technique "Kira" succeeded in making the anime more interesting. Kumohira being 25 years old has pulled me deeper into the story.
I didn't pay any attention to its OP and ED song, although the themes were really nice.
I was expecting the show to have tiny shounen-ai scenes, but sadly it didn't. Even so, it had many positive points which were so well to hide the negative ones.
The anime is worth watching. You'll love it.

Seriously, what a lame show. I mean I dont know why I continued to watch it. I guess you put a ninja theme to something and I become a sucker and gotta watch to the end.... here are the details.

Artwork: 6/10. Gimme a break. Flash/cut fights. Characters that all look like each other, practically the same clothes all the time. Hair colors all look so similar. Weak.

Music: 9/10. Probably one of the few bonuses in this series. The opening was pretty solid. The ending wasnt so bad. Music during the series helped give it a sense of urgency when necessary. Good work and probably one of the only well done things.

Story: 7/10. So you slap a ninja theme and put some magic and everyone is just supposed to get sucked into it? There is practically no essence to the story. The ending is predictable day 1. I bet you can tell me what will happen in the end after 5 episodes. Worse, the ninja theme is made stupid with the presence of modern technology. So disappointed.

Characters: 5/10. A clueless hero destined to save the world. The big bad antihero who is really a nice guy all along. Characters come and go. No weight to anyone. People die within a single episode occasionally but all main characters last forever.

Don't waste your time. This is a child story with a ninja theme to attract you.
