OK here we go.
Xam'd is one of those animes that makes me think why is it "not" popular, is it the lack of advertisment? Anyway to put that aside Xam'd is one of those rare animes that you may find simply by accidentally just simply bumping into it.
Story-8.5/10: While it sure isn't original Xam'd provides an interesting mix of romance with companionship. Akiyuki after getting off the bus to go to school witnesses a terrorist attack and becomes infected (with some sort of orb looking thingy... forgot the name) and changes into a Xam'd which then goes crazy. He gets taken away by a girl with tattoos and red hair. It goes on with his will to be reunited with his friends, but then of course unexpected things occur thus turning into "save the world" plot. Still it was very enjoyable and really reminded me of Eureka Seven: How the two lovers fight to get back to each other. Not to mention the story doesn't shy away from "sacrifice" you'll know what I mean when you watch.
Characters-8/10: Nothing I haven't seen before. There were a few times when the characters really made me think "yeah I would do it too" (maybe fanservice though...). All the characters each have their own things and reasons (though I wish they explained it better) for being there (once again it reminds me of Eureka Seven... weird huh?).
Music-9/10: Good... but the Opening and end songs really got stuck onto me (as I write this down, I'm listening to them, hehe). Helps set the mood but then again most animes (yeah most) do it.
Animation-9/10: Pretty good, I loved the concepts for the Xam'd dont really remember anything like this in any anime I have seen (in terms of design and how it's used). But then again it is BONES... if you know their anime then you know what to expect.
Overall-8.5: I really couldn't stop watching this, it's not that I was completely captivated....OK maybe, but it really had such a strong atmosphere to it that I just wanted to continue. Even after the end I just wanted more and more. Hell man, I wish they at least made an OVA to explain when everyone came back T_T. Sad ending... argh sacrifce for the greater good made me sad but it's a nice concept to finish on.

Words alone can not describe how I feel about this anime. All I have to say is that Bounen no Xamdou is simply beautiful. I don't want to hype this anime up, nor underrate it. I would have given this anime a 9.5 if possible - simply because it got my attention and won my heart even though I don't usually watch these kind of animes (Sci-fi/drama). You should definitely at least check this anime out.
A little bit of a disclaimer though - this anime is not what it seems like (a mecha anime). Don't go hopping on this anime wagon thinking of seeing a lot of mecha action. This anime is more of sci-fi/action/drama than a mecha.
Settings: The setting of this anime takes place in a world divided by two warring nations/armies simply called the Northerns and Southerns. In between them, a small island called Sentan Island is caught between the war. One of the main characters, Akiyuki resides in the island and the plot was set in motion after his life is changed.
Plot: 9/10 With all the movies, TV series, and animes out there, I doubt we'll see any more "Unique" or "Original" settings and people should really go back to high school to learn about "Archetypes". Anyway basically, these anime have two nations killing each other, but the story doesn't revolve around the cliche of trying to get these two nations to stop fighting or anything like that. Instead, this anime focuses more on individual characters and their roles in all of this mess.
The story of this anime may seem predictable at times but most of the time this anime will prove you wrong. It starts out sort of slow and confusing but it gets better as ideas are explained as the story progress. At twenty six episodes, this anime feels just about right, but another episode or two wouldn't hurt. I don't want to spoil anything about the ending so I would just say that the ending is proper and beautiful; it leaves most of the questions answered (I never had any questions to begin with since I was only interested in the characters).
Characters: 10/10- The characters are very detailed and well done. Almost everyone who had more than five lines were dynamic. The interactions between these characters are also brilliant. The main character Akiyuki seems like your average crybaby at first, but his personality grows and he matures. I think other minor and supporting characters were also explained thoroughly or given history well enough that we understand why they were doing so and so. The creators did it so well that even the so-called "antagonists" were likable.
Animation: 9/10 I'm not really a person who judges an anime by its animation, but I would have to say that the overall appearance, character designs, and animations were more than above average. Everything always look so bright and colorful.
Music: I don't like rating the sounds/music/openings of an anime simply because different people have different taste. The opening for example was pretty weird for me at first just because to me, the anime's tone and this music's tone didn't go well, but after a while I got used to it and learned to like it. For the most part, though, the background music goes and blends with the current events in the anime.
Overall: 9/10 This anime is definitely refreshing and is one of a kind. I won't go far saying this is one of the best anime ever, but it is definitely a great anime to watch and people should definitely check it. There is a little bit of everything in it for everyone, except for comedy sadly. In each episode there was little to no comic relief. But yeah, my words alone can not justify this anime so go ahead and watch it.

To me, Xam’d seemed almost like a cross between Eureka 7 and Last Exile. Needless to say that makes it pretty damn good.
Story: 8/10- A little typical in the idea of "protagonist gets strange new power and must learn to control it," but Xam’d manages to execute that familiar theme in fairly interesting and unique way. The larger story of future super powers at war is also bread and butter anime setting, but once again Xam’d manages to avoid almost all of the tired clichés and keep things original.
Characters: 9/10- Good depth of characters and great relationships between characters that developed in unique ways. Neither the characters nor their interactions with each other ever seemed two dimensional, forced, or stereotyped. I was always waiting to see where the show would take each persona and was never disappointed with the result.
Animation: 9/10- Loved the mecha, loved the monsters. The actions scenes involving them were very cool. I wouldn’t call the character design spectacular, but it was certainly better than average. Settings and background were also done very well. I thought the artwork was of very high quality throughout.
Music: 8/10- The music was good, but never really great. I liked the opening theme song. I liked a lot of the more atmospheric music. I thought the music for the fight scenes did its job well. This just isn’t my favorite category of criteria.
Overall: 8.5/10- Definitely seems to be one the better anime of the season. I strongly recommend checking it out.
