Eve no Jikan

Alternate title : Time of Eve

Studio : Studio Rikka

Length : 6 ONA

Year : 2008

Genre : Science-Fiction

Synopsis :
We live in a world where we are heavily reliant on machinery. In fact, in the near future, androids are common enough that you see them in almost every household. There exists discrepancies though, you'll see television programs concerned with our heavy dependence on robots, and you'll have "dori-kei". Dori-kei are humans that wish to have androids treated equally and have an unhealthy attraction to them. Androids are distinguished from humans by a digital ring above their head.

Rikuo is a young boy that has a family android named Sammy. One day while looking through her activity record, he finds some data worrisome. As he investigates her past movements, he and his friend Masaki reach a cafe. This cafe is unique in that the one and only rule is to not discriminate androids against humans. Rikuo later deduces that Sammy is displaying very human-like traits, which leaves him petrified.

Time of Eve was a spectacular and high quality piece of art. The most prominent feature, in my opinion, was just how gorgeous everything was. I found that the blend of 3D CG and 2D characters were very impressive. Use of shadows and lighting were reminiscent of Makoto Shinkai's work (5cm/s, Hoshi no Koe, etc.)- which are works of art!

Most people would say that the plot could have went deeper or futher. I think that the storytelling was really well done. You really look into the lives of our main character (Rikuo) and his android (Sammy). Even the characters they meet at the cafe pose some twists and turns. Rikuo's friend, Masaki, was introduced as a very normal character to me, but his past life created an interesting climax. Masaki probably had the most depth.

Lots of things to like about Eve no Jikan. Just a few non-quirks that people may frown upon. Time of Eve didn't have an Opening or Ending theme... there was no true "climax", "enemy" or encompassing problem. Which lead to the problem of establishing a conclusion. The final episode was quite open-ended. Only your imagination, for now, could create a solid conclusion - but you know how far imagination could go, or not go :p

What I liked about this ONA (Net Animation) was that is posed a lot of thought-stimulating questions. At what points can technology think for themselves? Should androids have similar rights to human beings? Are androids proud of being what they are or would they rather be humans? Defintely the more quirky side of this series was viewing the commercials played on television. The messages given from these fictional commercials were quite powerful. You know that there are some talented and intelligent people working behind Studio Rikka.

Great short series with good messages for you to think on. My favourite feature was the beautiful visual quality. I think many people can enjoy this great storytelling series.

"Since robots don't have a soul, how could they comprehend music?"

[Story: 8.5] Naturally, Time of Eve is far from being the first series influenced by Isaac Asimov's works. However, unlike most of the science fictions about Robotics (and Asimov's eponymous Three Laws of Robotics), Eve is done in a more slice-of-life style, rather than having the common action-focused plot. Nevertheless, as with its genre, the themes within the show can be easily surmised to revolve around the blurring of the boundary between machines and humans. While Eve doesn't really put a new spin to the genre, the characterization is more than enough and is done very well. Moreover, despite it being such a short series, it contained with it the right amount of drama and development that nicely ends off with what seems like a potential for a sequel hook.

[Characters: 9.0] The characters' interactions are thus what made this short series so entertaining. One example would be the way the robots express themselves, such as how their lively, diverse range of human dispositions while in the café (and thus free from the Laws put in place) is in stark contrast against the hollow, rigid and monotonous expressions when outside. This became a crucial point when we observe the gradual change in conversation style between Rikuo and his Android, Sammy. Indeed, it is impressive how the show managed to develop not just the main characters, but also provide adequate personalities and backstory for some members of the side cast when considering the length of the show.

[Art: 9.0] Eve is a work that is reliant on its visuals and as mentioned, the robots' actions within and outside the café are captured excellently and the scripting isn’t the only reason. Furthermore, there is also the nice blend of 2D and 3D CG, not unlike GONZO Digimation. The character designs may be rather plain, but its simplicity does spark its own charm.

Though Studio Rikka has produced only a few works, they have managed to establish several prominent styles, which I daresay, are easily identifiable with them. Most notably is of course their distinctive camera angle, whereby the use of occasional mild camera shakes enhances the realism of a First-Person View, making the various dialogues even more engaging to watch.

[Music: 8.0] Generally, the production value in Eve is high in more ways than one. Apart from the art quality, the cast consists of several big name voice actors such as Jun Fukuyama, Rie Tanaka and Tomokazu Sugita (though he got the minor role). The bgm is mild and rather minimal, but its theme piece is surprisingly catchy. Overall, the music blends well with the show and that will suffice.

[Summary] Interesting story and directing style plus aesthetically pleasing art makes Time of Eve recommendable for just about anyone. It is only about 6 episodes in length so it doesn't take long to watch anyway.

Personal Overall Rating: 8.5

Time of Eve is a very special ONA anime. For starters, it's very short, only 6 episodes each lasting 15 minutes each, but despite that, it manages to capture your attention or atleast it caught mine. The story, although vague in its essense is thought provoking. It deals with the future problem of AI. Should we treat robots as equal human beings or are they just machines? Although this anime won't answer that question and the end will leave you completely begging for more, I absolutely recommend this anime to anyone who wants to watch something different.

Story- good (vague but blame it on the time frame)

Characters- great (call me a roboholic but I like robots)

Animation- great (interesting 3d 2d mixing)

Music - adequate (no opening or ending theme)

...is a unique short webcast animation series... Which is some sort of experiment conceptual project that this guy made that combines 2d character design with 3d animation scenes... Something like that.

Well, the story touches on the relationship between humans and AI, who have became so advanced that it's difficult to tell the difference. It become a debate of moral issues here whether or not to give androids the respect of a sentient being, or just treat them as machines... Surely these issue has been touched on many times by various media (Chobits for example) but the animation style does give it a rather fresh feel to it.

Though it's short, and more of a series of short stories, it's enjoyable because of the interaction and relationship with the androids are pretty interesting, especially as the story is about androids crossing the line between them and humans and tries to enjoy a little freedom themselves... And show that they have a very human side to them as well.

The animation ain't perfect yet, but it's getting something there. What the show needs is really a good OP and ED, though small projects like this probably don't have the kind of budget. I would definitely like to see more of these.

Plot/Concept: Great!
Story Style: Great!
Audio/Visual: Very Good
Value: 9
