Let me start out by saying that I am currently thoroughly addicted to 07-Ghost. I finished the anime, read the manga up to currency and am re-watching it with some friends. I have long been waiting for a series that would properly delve into the church vs. military setting with good sci-fi and fantasy content and actually makes some sense of itself both politically and religiously.
The major driving force behind this show is the epic story that unfolds around the main characters Teito Klein and Bishop Frau and their interactions with the main military villain Ayanami. There is enough action (though it's no studio Bones quality fight scenes) to keep me on the edge of my seat, but it is really the character development and memorable life lessons from the imperfect bishops themselves that keep me coming back for more.
Be ready to pay close attention to detail with this one, it can be a little jumpy at times, but it doesn't take away from the story. Rather the flashbacks and premonitions serve to illuminate new points that were previously easily overlooked. The only real drawbacks are that the anime is not completely accurate to the manga, with some scenes coming in very different chronological order, and that season one ends beautifully but wide open, making me have to wait for more.
Animation - 8, action scenes could be better but overall well done.
Sound - 9, OP and ED songs fit very well.
Characters - 10, designs, personalities, and interactions are near perfect.
Story - 9, Death gods, elite troops, and demons, what more could you want?
Overall - 9, highly recommended for any fantasy/sci-fi fans.

It was obvious that this would be a yaoi-josei show, but the military angle and fantasy world setting was enough to get me to give the show a chance.
Story (3/10): Sloooow. That is the best way to describe this anime. After the first episode the pacing is killed. A large part of this is the result of 07-Ghost being another manga turned into an anime far too quickly. Even though only 25 episodes were planned, thus not as many manga chapters needed to have passed, Studio DEEN still pulls the trigger too quickly. Most of the first 10 episodes are filler that features the enemy-of-the-week formula and gives the anime time to way overdo yaoi moments between Teito and Mikage. The last two episodes deter from the anime to wrap up the season (yep, more filler!). These episodes try to give Teito some finite stand how he will live his life and handle the trials he will face in the near future. But with the whole story still being in the early stages Teito is supposed to still have uncertainties. He makes a growing leap in episode 23, but then the anime clearly tries to force the expansion of his character in the last two episodes. In the end we just get Teito repeating what we already know about him, with Teito just concluding that he will defeat the main villain, blah blah blah... Sadly, that villain, Ayanami, a cold-hearted, arrogant bastard throughout the story, comes off as more interesting at the end.
characters (6.5/10): The cast is not bad, and there is no one character that really irritates me. But there is nothing really special coming from this cast. Teito is a good main character. I understand his attachment to Mikage; but again, it is beaten to death. Frau gets some good development, and he is enjoyable as a unruly, perverted bishop. Hakuren is also good as a noble who attempts to become a bishop due to his disgust with his father and the nobility. But among the other Bishops, the nun girls, and Ayanami's unit simply do not get enough leg room to really emerge in the anime.
animation (6.5/10): Okay, there are pretty boys, but it is yaoi-josei and pretty boys are the animation style used a lot these days. I am not really a good evaluator on pretty boys, but I can say the character designs do not look like anything special; but they follow the manga close. The illuminating brightness at the church scenes is a little too much. The use of words to magic spells is an intriguing feature; too bad the action was mostly stagnant. This partially has to do with the enemy-of-the-week being defeated by the same attack so often. The action does pick up, and the battles in the last two episodes are good enough the save the animation score. Not bad animation, just unfufilling.
music (7/10): The gothic and celestial musical scores within the show are good and fitting. The ED is decent and quaint. The opening song is not bad, but the animation is horribly mismatched. The very last song to end the show is good.
entertainment (1/10): I understand that yaoi-josei is a huge theme in 07-Ghost, which being a guy obviously does not appeal to me; but I have read the manga and not been as bothered by this factor because the story, which is interesting, actually moves. There are actually good action and storyline aspects in the world of 07-Ghost; but, the anime does not utilize the good points well. When an anime is so slow and repetitive at the start, then how does it expect to keep the viewers' attention? I could not take it anymore and stopped watching. Yes, I returned to watch the end (only to make a proper assessment for this review) and the anime did get me to notice the existence of the manga; however, the anime itself is just not good. Attention anime production studios and manga artists: Even if making an anime might draw some attention to the manga, when the anime is this bad it will turn off more interest than it will gain.
07-Ghost has elements to make it universally appealing; but I will not waste any more time with an 07-Ghost anime.
