Wow. I'll just get straight to the point. The story is EXTREMELY unique. It's like no other. This really reminds me of Ghost in the Shell. If you watched that, you'll like this. This anime has that ... technological action mystery thing to it. Do you know what I mean?

The music was great. Nothing to complain about.

The characters...eh. The girl really annoyed me. She was a ditz and if anything, she just held the guy back.

I really liked this one because it had all the elements knitted together perfectly. Romance, action, comedy, suspense, mystery, wow. You really can't go wrong here.

I believe one of the below reviewers said the anime was very slow. Slow? This anime was ...like 12 episodes long? You can't get any faster than that. I don't remember any time during the anime that I believed it was too slow. I actually stayed up till 5 AM watching this because I just couldn't stop. That's how amazing it was. Strongly recommended.

Eden of the East (Higashi no Eden) is a very unique show; so much that I didn’t feel like I’m watching an anime series at all. Traditionally anime focus a lot of viewer attention on characters (especially on moe and gar archetypes) and on the plot; Higashi no Eden focuses instead on the animation quality and story execution.

The story of this series hardly seems to progress and the mysteries unfolds very, very slowly, leaving you with more and more questions on the way; which is probably why the animation quality mattered so much. If the animation quality is subpar, then viewers would probably drop this at the first episode thinking it’s a poorly animated series; but the incredibly high animation quality promises something more, and that’s what kept people (myself included) on this series.

Overall, Higashi no Eden actually have quite little story content; everything that really mattered can probably be summed up in 3 or 4 episodes. What made me enjoy watching the series is how smoothly the story progresses, the stylish execution of the plot and the depth of the storyline. The slow pace of the series left me with too many question until late in the series, but it has kept me wanting to know more.

In the end, I had hoped for more than what Higashi no Eden delivered… but no, I wasn’t that disappointed, because this series, after all, was to set up the series for the story that followed in the next 2 coming movies. With all the apprehension that has build up in earlier episodes, I had hoped something would happen… maybe the coming movies would made it worth it.

Plot/Concept: Good
Story Style: Fantastic!
Audio/Visual: Excellent
Value: 8

Story: 7/10
Unfortunately, I did not like this one. Even if its plot is very original, I find myself bored in every episode. The pace is slow and they lack to explain clearly, what is going on until the end parts. The only thing I like is Juiz can do anything, and I am badly wishing I could have that cell phone too.

Animation: 9/10
In this age of Anime, where almost all the anime had good quality, I think this can stand out. Character designs are really great and they draw the environment of modern Japan very realistic. The lightings were really angled and the movements are constant.

Characters: 7/10
Their character designs are good, but their character development are lacking. Takizawa has the potential to be an unforgettable character if he is more mature and intelligent. There are also some useless characters in the series.

Music: 7/10
The opening theme is cool, but it adds to the loneliness and seriousness of this anime. However, the BGMs are good and appropriate to the scenes.

Overall: 7/10
This anime is only like a trailer in the upcoming movie of Eden of the East. There is no climax into it and they lack in action. I do not like the fact that the other Selecao die easily after making their first appearance.

Eden of the East was a very interesting anime that kept my attention the entire time and was never predictable. So far it’s definitely one of my favorites of 2009.

Characters: 8/10- The characters (especially the protagonist) are good, but unfortunately I found them lacking in depth. Given that the main character lost his memory in the first episode, not having sufficient development for his role is fairly understandable. For the supporting cast, however, the two-dimensionality is somewhat disappointing.

Plot: 9/10- As I said, the plot was extremely interesting and engaging. After a brief lull between episodes one and two, I was glued to the screen watching the story unfold. The twists and turns kept me guessing the entire time and I was really rooting for the protagonist throughout. My only complaint was the rushed ending that left the questions we had been asking the entire time hanging plainly in mid-air. With its apparent popularity, however, hopefully we’ll see an Eden of the East Season Two that resolves some of them.

Art: 8/10- The artwork was good but it certainly wasn’t great. While the background design and object animation was above par in my opinion, the character design was fairly generic and lacking in detail. I thought that it did a good job of integrating some digital imaging into the artwork as well, a practice I’m usually not fond of.

Music: 9/10- As always this is my least favorite category. I’ll say that I actually like the opening theme song, and I’m a guy who’s picky about his theme songs. The background music was fine but not really memorable in any way.

Overall: 8.5/10- So all in all a very solid watch. Like I said, I really do hope for a second season in order to fill out the parts of story left unanswered.

What an anime!

Set in the modern day world, this series tides in a fast paced yet well executed burst of suspense, with just the right amount of information being revealed and concealed at the same time. Its eye candy is top quality, its storyline fitting for an anime of its genre. Though it may become overrated, though its middle may lag a tad and though the animators plan to tease the viewers with a cliffhanger at the end of the TV series (combined with movies that will be released in what seems like eons from now), Eden of the East sets a high standard for both suspense shows and "short" animes alike.

The thing is, almost none of it becomes boring. The first few episodes are better in terms of pacing and thrill than some of the middle ones, but the rest of the series delivers well. Who/what is going on? Why is this happening? Viewers are sure to consistently ask these questions.

Yet nothing is completely revealed by the end of the series. Some aspects of the story are tastefully concealed, lulling viewers into eager bouts of anticipation. Is that not what a suspense is about?

At the same time, some of the characters are likable. I might not put them on the "lovable" status, because I could not bring myself to like one of the main characters (and the rest of the Eden crew were a little annoying), but they kept the series chugging along and I wouldn't have it any other way. Sometimes they weren't exactly believable: they each had basic motivations for their actions but sometimes came out as over-the-top. (Maybe that's what happens with NEETs?) I probably actually liked some of the "villains" in this series more than the "good guys" (save for Akira).

Or are there really "villains" in this series? Each and every one of the Selecao, after all, has his/her own motivation, which people can, in some way, sympathize with (probably with the exception of a couple). A game of survival, gone awry with the promise that only one may live.

Putting that aside, I liked the simple designs made by the creator of Honey and Clover for this series, although Akira looked a bit too much like Morita from the latter (and this had a profound impact on my opinion of Morita, since I watched Honey and Clover after this). Some may find it a bit too simplistic as an array of character styles could have been used with the almost photographic quality of the animation as a whole. They did work, however, exactly because of their simplicity: the main characters stood out, although I didn't really like how Saki looked - I would have preferred her with a bit of "whimsical glow" about her. (But that's pretty difficult to insert in a suspense anime.)

The music was good. I didn't really pay attention to it, but the songs were sound and not grating. Whether or not they matched the "feel" of the anime is left up to interpretation.

On the other hand, I had mixed feelings with the ending itself. I could see the cliffhanger, got sucked into it, but it did not impact me nearly as much as it would have. Yes, I do want to see what happens next, but the ending seemed to just fit for the series. Ambiguity was an excellent step for the creators.

Eden of the East is an excellent anime. Its animation is top notch, its storyline attention-grabbing. The flow may need a bit of work, but otherwise, this is a great alternative for other suspense series that you feel might be too long to marathon in one shot (such as Death Note). Highly recommended, and I hope you enjoy it.

If you've read my in-depth review *cough, shameless self-plug, cough* you probably know my feelings about this anime. If not, get ready to learn about one of the most compelling anime this 2009 season.

Animation: Production I.G. takes the reigns for Eden of the East and does a fantastic job. Using reverse photo rendering, each background is breathtaking, and the animation consistently remains at a very high level throughout the series. 10/10

Story: The story picks up at a fast pace from the first episode, introducing us to Saki, a recent college graduate, and Takizawa, a random stranger who helps her out of a jam in Washington D.C. There's a lot more to Takizawa than meets the eye, and as the viewer discovers more about his past, the more confused and engrossed in the storyline they will become. I won't say much more about the actual plot, only because the series will be that much more special to you if you experience it as is was designed. Unfortunately, the series is unable to maintain its whimsical but serious pace, and it delves deeper into Takizawa's past, it finds itself mired under its own ambition. The story is never bad, but it can't keep up to the high standard it set with the first few episodes. Fortunately it pulls it out in the end with a spectacular finale, although it does end on a cliffhanger, which could annoy some viewers. 8/10

Characters: Saki, Takizawa, and the development of their friendship/romance are really what bring this entire story to life. In their unique and individual ways, they illustrate for us the larger themes and points that the series tries to get across. Chika Umino (Honey and Clover) does the character designs and although they are very simple, they are animated well and leap off of the screen, demanding that you pay attention. Any side characters that the two become involved with are far from static, and most are given a decent backstory that only add to drive the themes of the series home. 10/10

Music: The series consistently makes interesting music choices, beginning with the opening, "Falling Down," sung entirely in English by Oasis. "Futuristic Imagination," sung by School Food Punishment, makes up the ending theme and the animation sequences for both are beautifully done. The attention to detail in the voice acting will also be appreciated, especially by any English speaker. 9/10

Overall: Eden of the East is not without faults, but it's one of the most entertaining and well-crafted anime that has been released in a while. Therefore, 10/10
