Saki is a series that didn’t impress me much after the first few episodes, but I continued to watch it when I didn’t have anything else to watch. That’s when it became interesting and I was hooked.
Animation: Although the animation is bright and colorful, it's also somewhat garish to, and this can be a turn-off going into the series. It’s not terrible, and stays at a fairly high level consistently, but the art style just isn’t something that I liked. 7/10
Characters: The most unfortunate thing about Saki is that the titular character herself is one of the most uninteresting characters in the series. Even the energetic and annoying loli Yuki (voiced by a very good Rie Kugimiya) is more entertaining. Nearly all of the characters fall into stereotypes (loli, bookworm, quiet with large breasts, etc.) although one of them rises above the rest to capture your attention; school president and mahjong club president, Hisa Takei. In fact, I became much more engrossed with her past rivalry with Mihoko (from another rival school) than Saki’s individual story. In fact, many of the side characters from other schools are a lot more interesting than Saki. 6/10
Story: The story starts off slowly, but picks up quickly as soon as Saki actually joins the Kiyosumi High School mahjong club and they start aiming for the national tournament. The pacing of the team tournament is great, and like any sports anime it keeps you engrossed and on the edge of your seat. Even though all the girls do is sit at a mahjong table, they slam tiles down like champs. Unfortunately, the show climaxes too early when the regional team tournament wraps up, and the individual tournament begins. It’s not boring, per se, but the last six episodes don’t compare to the suspense that the team tournament created, and almost act as setup episodes (for the next stage in the tournament and a second season?) 7/10
Music: The music is not terrible, not great. None of the five songs that make up the two openings and three ending themes are playlist-worthy for me. The background music sets up suspense, but doesn’t really add a lot to the overall picture. 5/10
Overall: Saki ended up being a relatively entertaining show to watch once I got past the first few episodes. It is in no way one of the best anime of the year, but for a funny and enjoyable pseudo-sports series, it fills its position well. 6/10
