I didn’t really intend to give Natsu no Arashi a try, because I was really bothered with the character designs and frankly, I don’t really understand Kobayashi Jin’s perception of how a pretty anime girl should look like. In the end, I gave it a try anyway, since it’s made by my favourite studio SHAFT. It’s lucky I did, because Natsu no Arashi turned out to be my favourite show during that season.
Despite being a mainly comedy series, Natsu no Arashi had some storyline in it, mainly relating to Arashi’s past and her time-traveling powers. It’s pretty interesting, seeing how a large part of the series revolves around time-traveling, and the effects of changing history. I also quickly got used to Arashi and Kaya’s character designs, as it isn’t so bad animated.
It’s hard to describe how this series is like, since it features a little of everything; nonsensical comedy, wartime tragedy, moving drama, although it all revolves around the idea of time-travel. The different themes don’t feel out of place though; somehow, they fit together very well. You’ll have to see for yourself to understand.
Animation wise, I think the quality has dropped a little compared to the previous few series SHAFT has made; but it didn’t seem very obvious, so no points deducted. Shinbo Akiyuki’s unique animation style isn’t very apparent in this series though, apart from the many cameos. I didn’t like the oldie-style OP, but it does fits the series well. I do really like the ED though.
In conclusion, Natsu no Arashi was a unique anime series that was surprisingly good, and worth a try.
Plot/Concept: Excellent!
Story Style: Good
Audio/Visual: Good
Value: 8
