The Tsubasa Shunraiki OVA should come with a giant warning label that reads, ‘For fans who are caught up with the manga chapters ONLY.’ If the viewer is not caught up, watching this will not only spoil them, but also leave them hopelessly confused.
The storyline for this two-part OVA picks up miles ahead of where Bee Train left off with the television series, which was morphing into it’s own anime original retelling anyway, and a bit further than the Tokyo Revelations OVA. Since it’s at the tail end of an important battle, even those well versed in the manga may be confused as to why they chose this particular spot to begin the story. It helps if you’ve seen Tokyo Revelations, but you won’t fully understand what’s going on unless you’ve actually read the Tsubasa: Chronicles manga, where animating these key scenes may help to better understand the manga. Unfortunately, the abruptness to which the viewer is thrown in alienates a lot of people. Aside from this problem, the Tsubasa Shunraiki OVA is excellent in both the story it tells, and the production values that bring it to life.
Shunraiki is animated by Production I.G., who also animated both xxxHolic television series, and the companion crossover OVA, xxxHolic: Shunmuki. They do an excellent job, especially with the framing of each scene, and the transitions. Shunraiki has a few dramatic fight scenes, and these are only enhanced by the seamless artwork. The background music also adds a lot, though the opening and closing themes are forgettable.
There’s not much to be said about the characters or the story because if you aren’t familiar with both already, you won’t understand what happens in this OVA, and it becomes just a pretty and well-animated hour of confusion. I am familiar with the manga, and seeing these parts animated helped clarify the story a bit more, so for someone with the same familiarity level, I would give this OVA a nine; however, I can’t imagine that a viewer watching this without all of the back story would give it anything above a six. Therefore, 7/10.
