Riders on the Storm
This interpretation on Hans Christian Andersen's The Little Mermaid is one of Miyazaki's weirdest anime film to date. From a man who wears too much makeup (and names his daughter Brunhilde) to a mother that is several kilometers high we get an eccentric cast of characters that populate this great story. My review will be based on the English Dubs as I find Disney does justice to the anime. In my opinion, they also do a better job than the original Japanese voice actors.
Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea can be considered to be a spiritual successor to My Neighbor Totoro and Spirited Away where ordinary life is given a supernatural twist...except that Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea goes off the deep end into the surreal. At the beginning, we see some guy create numerous jellyfishes and many other unknown lives from a small droplet. Ponyo, our heroine, has enough power to raise the waves until it sinks a majority of Japan. The waves themselves have eyes! These scenes and many other are magical and unforgettable.
Characters are also equally excellent. We have the indefatigable Ponyo whose personality keeps the film lively. Her antics in the film are funny. In one instance she mischievously soaks a poor girl's blouse. In another she'll be calling in a flood of biblical proportions. To balance her recklessness we have Sosuke who acts as the level minded but also easily excitable accomplice. These two together, alongside an excellent supporting cast, does wonders to the movie.
It’s strange that Hayao Miyazaki considers himself a pessimist because the story of Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea is simple but endearing. The fish Ponyo wants to become human to live with her friend Sosuke. There isn’t any significant challenge that needs to be overcome by Ponyo and Sosuke. The focus is on their friendship. Their relationship to their family, whether good or bad, is also a constant theme throughout the movie. We see the relationship of Ponyo and her overbearing father on one extreme and Sosuke and his mother on the other.
Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea does not have the usual cliché seen in animated films. There is no skeptical parent character who always brushes aside the concerns of the child. Nor are there any wisecracking idiots who make jokes to entertain the parents in the audience. The movie doesn't need to. With an excellent story this is one film that can be enjoyed by everyone.
Hence 10/10

Ponyo was an all-around FUN film to watch. Character interactions were engaging, and the events were very easy to follow. This movie can easily be enjoyed by a young audience or the young at heart. I know I had chuckled or swooned at some cute moments. The overall feeling for Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea was mystifying, but at the same time down to earth.
Miyazaki offers a lot to the table in all his films. But I think the main entree to his creations are his characters. Characters in all movies I've seen are extremely charismatic and cute. They still shell a young innocence to them making it much more open to adventures. Basically, all his characters... have character. Ponyo was incredibly unique in all her "HAM" antics. There were also little tid-bits of background characters having some fun - acting really cute!
Another great main course that oftentimes goes overlooked is the animation. Ponyo was less extraordinary in its art compared to others, but the animation was still high quality. His animation has been a luxury, and we've been spoiled. So much solid effort into each production, and I really was tickled at the great artistry in this movie.
The one thing that bugged me about this film was the ridiculousness in some character actions. The main protagonists were around the age of 5, yet the adult characters didn't seem to notice that they're traveling on their own. No righteous parent would leave their preschooler on their own during a disastrous event! Which leads me to the next perk, how the mother, Lisa, would turn her cheek to the massive ocean waves and frightening winds! Her behaviour was as if she experiences these storms everyday. She was pulling Initial D driving in some scenes. Crazy!
In a nutshell, Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea is a very fun film. You'll warm up to the young characters easily. The sense of adventure is firm, and the magic leaves you feeling optimistic. Easily enjoyable!
