Story/Dev: 77%
The story was surprisingly quite good and I like the plot of the later part of the series, what with the revelation of Asakura Hao. I especially like the set up of the scene for finale between Yoh and Hao. Also, it is rather refreshing to see that the series concentrates on something unique, with the concept of Shamans, rather than following the common popular trend of using Shinigami for supernatural themed series.
I would have given this series a rating of 8 at the very least, if it weren’t for the introduction of the “Big Oversoul," which was just so silly, resembling a jumble of Power Rangers combi-transformation and Dragon Ball power-ups, which was a real shame, as the plot for the second half of the series was actually very good.
Animation/Graphics/Design: 72%
The graphics quality is good, and the animations for the fight scenes were decent– for the first part of the series, that is. As said, the “Big Oversoul" thing was stupid and really ruined the show; the finale between the protagonist and villain would have been way better without it. The series initially had reasonably solid fight scenes, but after the introduction of the Big Oversoul, it focuses more on power-ups and explosions.
Characters/Dev: 75%%
The seiyuu for Yoh did a decent job in portraying Yoh's laid-back voice, though the rest are just average. Surprisingly, there is distinct growth and depth in the character development. The cast is quite enjoyable too, and are rather hilarious at times. I like the name of Yoh’s sword as well as his Spirit.
Music: 86%
The music is the typical “shounen-type" music, but well, they sound good, so that’s okay. The bgms are average, nothing really spectacular. My personal opening/endings from this anime are “Brave Heart" and “Northern Lights."
Summary:
Shaman King sure is worth the watch; just don’t expect too much out of it.
Personal overall rating: 74%

I’ve watched this very long ago, and I had a pretty bad impression of it. I regretted buying the manga series, but the anime’s probably a greater waste of time.
It wasn’t too bad in the beginning, how they bring out the interesting part of these “Shaman concept, the fights are rather interesting. But after the main story element, the Shaman Fight comes in, everything went to dragonball. The fights were disgusting; it wasn’t about technique or skill, it was all about how cool their weapons can be, and pretty much their shaman power value (forgot what it is called) determines the outcome of the battle, nearly every single time.
The character development is really good though; they carefully played out the character’s growth throughout the series and match their skills with it. Their personalities are distinct and are all rather cool ones.
The animation is weird with the character faces look a lot distorted, but I give it that it’s the style of the series. But the use of colours is weird, the animation is choppy, and what rare, the voice acting sucks... I cannot really explain why, but it gives me the feel like a lot of English dubs do.
The songs are good though. In fact, they are really good shounen songs, particularly “Nothern Lights
Conclusion: Bad. It wasn't so much as unenjoyable, but more of an incredible waste of time.

This anime is more than just a mere disappointment to me… it starts of interesting, at the developing stage the story were getting more and more action pack and interesting. So this is about shamans and their spirits… reminds me of Erementar Gerad, but seriously Shaman King is nothing compare to Erementar Gerad.
Characters were acceptable, story wise was pretty much acceptable, while the music was hardly digestible, but the interaction and developing of the characters simply spark the anger in me. There too much pathetic character who call themselves as friend but can’t do a single thing. (It seems like this anime seriously trying to prove the theme call ‘friendship’ but in a horrible way.) For instant I despise Manta to the extend I hate this anime. Simply put it would have been a better anime if the characters were to be much develop rather than leaving them as useless as they can be from the beginning till the ending.
Oh and the reason this anime even get a 4 out of 10 from me is thanks to Anna… she really rocks!! Other than her, I could not found an interesting or attraction in this anime. No joke, 64 episodes of dreadful and soul torturing… Is amazing how on earth I could even finish the series though I found myself forwarding most of the episodes most of the time…

Shaman King is an anime that makes the viewers seeking and wanting to watch more. it is about saving the world, ghosts (spirits), action, friendship, hilarious, fate, etc.
There an enormous amount of character in the story and each of them has different powers which makes it interesting when it comes to battles. The main characters are mostly the ones that turns the mood into funny mode.
The music is filled of excitement that fills up the atmosphere of the anime. The combine of the music with the story turns the anime much more entertaining to the viewers.

Shaman King got assraped by 4 Kids TV. I mean some serious anal penetration. The storyline is pretty unique as it revolves around the culminating events of Yoh Asakura as he strives to become the shaman king (which has control over the great spirit).
Plot 6/10, 9/10:
I'm only going to talk more about the japanese version because thats what you're going to want to watch. The Japanese version (with the 9/10) involves lots of comedy that made a) some sense and b) lots of gags. The plot is original and the fighting was really good. It was basically about a boy growing up and trying to find his true purpose in life with his friends.
The other version got violated. They only had the gags and no substance. The comedy wasn't even funny. The plot followed similarily to the manga but there were differences. I think they tried to make Ryu less of a homosexual but that left me wondering why he had such a gay voice actor.
Animation 8/10:
Animation was on-par with everything else but the concepts behind them were pretty original. I liked the costumes but some of the spirits looked really whacked. Seriously. But it wasn't bad and semi-enjoyable.
Audio 7/10, 8/10:
On both of them the op's and ed's weren't super. I mean the eng version was wayyyyyyyyyy better then some of the others I've heard when converted in to eng media. The jap versions weren't all that hot because the singer had a very strange voice...but it was still acceptable all around.
GO WATCH IT. If you like fight anime thats got action then go check it out. While you're at it, buy a couple vols. of the manga licensed by VIZ.

This anime is overlooked alot, and now that it had been raped by 4Kids TV, it is mostly ignored. Also because it is thought of as Bleach's rip off, even though Shaman King was BEFORE Bleach. And that makes me a bit sad.
The characters are pretty original, different personalities to each character. Some characters are pretty straightforward out, such as Horo Horo (the blue haired guy for those who have watched the american verison), he wants to cure his spirit's land, whose residents live in the nature, but the land is being destroyed so it can make way for construction. Not much left to describe except for his sister. And then also there's Chocolove (the jaguar guy) who saw an old man who had inspired him to become a comedian die. Now he goes by saying that humor is the best medicine.
The difficult backgrounds are ones such as Ren, as he is a descendant of a wealthy chinese family. Also, the main character, Yoh, also has a cloudy background, being a part of the villian, Hao(Zeke). You also see some of Lyserg's past, but none of Ryu's past for some reason.
The music was all by the same person, but meh... I didn't like it much, partically why I gave it a 9 instead of a 10. It's tolerable, not something that could tear your eardrums out.
The fighting scenes were okay as well, as each battle contributed to the characters, but one or two of them may be dragged out. Everyone in this anime can hold their own in a battle except for one or two, so really no one's in danger in any fight.
The plot is interesting enough so your eyelids are up, but not so you're on the edge of your seat. At the end, you might be, but for the rest of the anime, not much. The characters first must pass the first part of the Shaman Fight, (if you win, you become the Shaman King and you get to control the Great Spirit.), and then find Patch village, which is a part of the fight on it's own. After you arrive at Patch Village, you have to fight to the top of all the other shamans in a three man team.
Almost every character is used in the end, some more than others, overall, it's a great anime to pass the time.

Vinz's Synopsis:
Shaman are blessed with the unique ability to see the dead, Shamans perfect their skills in hopes to compete in the grand Shaman King Tournament held only once every 500 years. Yoh Asakura, a young Shaman teams up with Amidamaru, the ghost of a samurai warrior who lived 600 years ago, Yoh wishes to be crowned as the Shaman King. But he is not alone. A powerful clan of evil Shamans are after the title as well and it will be up to Yoh and his spirit companion jobs to stop them and save the world.
Vinz's Review:
At the beginning, it may seem boring but after a few episodes, the real actions will begin to start and we will be so absorbed by it. This anime is about friendship, love, action, adventure and much more.
There are a lot of characters in the this anime, but they all have different appearances, so it makes it fascinating to watch. I like the main character, he makes funny jokes sometimes and people always need a good laugh while watching an anime.
The music in the anime fits very well, it is in the exact mood for the anime. The songs are put always in a excited mood, so that people won't get bored but more like impatient to what's going to happen next. The voices of the characters are a perfect match.
The fighting scenes are just so awesome because the characters have different ghosts and the ghosts have different attacks and weapons. The main character always fight each time with different Shamans, so it makes it more interesting because you will want to guess what are their special skills of the enemies.

Yet another one-of-a-kind anime. First i thought a weird shaman kid, Asakura Yoh, and spirits are interesting enough, but more and more interesting stuffs keep coming, best of it is the shaman fight.
A fight against other shamans to become the shaman king, everyone has their own dream, and Yoh wants... to have a simple life(so as his future wife, Anna). The story is not all about fighting too, there are times when its really funny(Anna's hellish training) and sometimes stuffs with deep meaning(The history of Asakura...Hao appears).
The graphics are good especially the fightings, When Yoh and his friends(though rivals in a sense) grew stronger and learn new moves, it never fails to amaze me.
The music is good too, 2 opennings, 2 endings, and 2 in-show music, all 6 of them are good, love them all!

Shaman King is an anime with a great idea, but sometimes falls short in execution. The story is intriguing, with the mystic shamans from all over the globe fighting to be King. The music overall is very good, especially the intro song. The voice acting is mostly decent and I think they perfectly pegged Yoh with the guy they got. However, the animation sometimes drags a bit, and it seems like they often reuse fight scenes to save money, and this is a bad move. The character designs range from fantastic (Faust VIII) to decent (Silva) to just plain dumb (Manta). It's still a pretty good one, but I would only recommend it to those who don't mind the occasional repeated fight.

Posted by : novabomb Posted on : 2005-12-17
Overall, the main strength in this anime to me is definitly the story. the character designs weren't that great, and the battle scenes weren't that great, but the originality and the creativity of the story is what made this anime worth watching.
The music in the intro is great. both intro songs got me into the whole music, which wasn't that bad in general.
Character designs were creative, but they weren't that great, it would of been better if each character would show more personality or more action thoguh, but overall, the characters weren't that bad.
Yoh and the others battle scenes weren't that bad. kinda got boring after a while because its always the same thing, the same concept and repetition, would of been better if they added more concept to the fighting and more twists, would of made the battles more excititing in a way
What really makes me mad is the dubbing they had for this. The english dubbing basically changed all the original names and almost the whole story.
The manga for this I heard is quite diffrent. diffrent story, diffrent plot line and everything, I suggest checking the manga out when you have the chance, it would probably go more in dept to the story instead of ending it so abruptly.
Overall, pretty decent anime to watch. i give it a 6/10.

Saw this on Foxbox at first and decided it was interesting enough to watch subtitled (because I hate dubs, kind of takes away from the whole anime watching experience). Watched the series in a week and it was Pretty good. Not something I'd recommend to everyone, but a decent series most people should enjoy.
Animation: The consistency of the animation was pretty bad. Some of the characters look like they were done very quickly, disregarding quality. An example of this were the Lily 5 group. They didn't come close to the quality of Yoh and his friends. The style was unique, and all the characters had unique designs. Their hairstyles were all very different in size, shape, and color. The animation wasn't bad enough to ruin the experience. Decent animation quality. A bad part about the animation was that there are a lot of reused screens. They get lazy or something when it comes to the fights and reuse a lot of screens. 7.
Sound: The opening and ending themes were decent. The music just didn't connect with me. The background music was good. The music set the moods very well. Sad scenes would have sad music, mysterious scenes would have music with a foreboding feeling, and so forth. Good job in the music. 8.
Story: The series revolves around a boy named Yoh, and his quest to become the Shaman King. His journey leads him to face many trials and tribulations. Along the way, Yoh meets many people who he eventually befriends. In regards to emotional development, there wasn't too much between Yoh and Anna, Yoh's fiancee and a spirit medium. They ended up having about the same relationship as they started with. The development between Yoh and his friends, however actually progressed much more. Good story and character development. 9.
Characters: All the characters were very unique. They all had a unique look and different personalities. The characters I didn't like were Lyzerg and Bokuto no Ryu. Lyzerg because he's a whiny little bastard, and Ryu because he's confused about his sexuality. They both got annoying. Everyone else was quite normal and enjoyable. 7.
Enjoyment: I enjoyed this series all the way until the end. The ending was horrible. The rest of the series was very enjoyable to watch. I liked the pacing and overall presentation. The series didn't seem to have many filler episodes like the stereotypical hot spring trip. The ending really killed the series for me though. 8.
Overall: The series was really good until the ending. I can't stress anymore on how bad the ending was. It's as if the company ran out of funds and had to end it. Everything else about the series was pretty good. The puns that Chocolove threw around every episode was pretty funny. Ren stabbing him in the nose was pretty funny too. With light humor, decent action, and good character interaction, this series was well done. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone because it is slightly childish, and I believe it was aimed at children or young teens.

This anime made me felt happy while watching it, leaving a deep impression in both my heart and soul. It's really something, and I'm loving it.
The TV series follows the same style from its manga version which is somewhat amazing. On the other hand, the storyline focuses on the life of shamans, exposed for the first time ever in anime format. Allowing the audience to widen their horizon and boundaries on the story, since we'll feel like having the same journey like Yoh and friends did while looking at their antics on screen.
Anyways, what I like most about Shaman King is its humor, because the jokes are funny indeed and seem spontaneously executed on timing. For example, I can't help myself to prevent from laughing everytime I see both Yoh and Manta being tortured by Anna; so hilarious!
Next we have the background music which is fantastic, by the way. The score fits on par with the emotions conveyed by the scenarios and pops out on right timing to stimulate the depth of feelings on the viewers, so that they can feel what's happening in the story at the present moment.
Following, the show presents an array of long episodes featuring a character from the cast individually. Several main and supporting characters take their time to be exposed to the audience.
Overall, this anime is absolutely fantastic because brings me so much happiness while watching it. I wish to lead an easy life just like Yoh does. Anyways, pry your eyes on it, because it's worth it.

This is one of the animes that proves that it doesn't only take great art in animation to pull off a good anime. Although the animation doesn't give that much details, the movements are fluid enough to reflect good quality. The story is definite and good. The old mixture of action and comedy always works even for this one.
Even though the story starts to go down the slope in the middle, the story starts to pick up its excitement in later scenes. Just proves that in every great anime is always composed of good animation, GREAT STORY and good music...always works everytime.

What do you think about the relationship between shaman and anime/manga? Of course, Shaman King is the answer! The anime is different than other already existing anime/manga as Shaman King is about shaman world which involving spirit/soul as the main subject.
Asakura Yoh is a student and a shaman who has the ability to communicate with soul/spirit which cannot be seen with normal human naked eyes. He also can manipulate the spirit power when connecting with them. Yoh's arrival to Tokyo is actually to participate in shaman fight which will be held in that town. Only a shaman will be chosen as the Shaman King whom has the abiliti to channel "Spirit King" and controll all other spirit in the entire world.
Shaman King is a unique anime series because of its storyaf the miracle of shaman world which is rarely discussed in anime/manga world in Japan. Every character's personality is matched with their emotion and style. However, for those Shaman King fan who have not read the manga and for anybody who never watch/read Shaman King, you must know this:
# The plot in manga is slightly different than the anime (at least that's what I see) because in manga, the plot expand from time to time, in contrast to the anime plot which looks static.
# The characteristic in the anime is also slightly different to the manga, for examples Yoh is a straightforward boy in the manga but he looks calm and wise in the anime.
# If you think that the fighting scene in the anime is good, than I think in the manga it's better because there are some battle tactics added in serious way in manga. This means Shaman King fan will miss certain fighting scene if they just watching the anime.
That's the difference that I found after both watching the anime and read the manga. Even so, I still think that Shaman King anime is really good, especially the OP, ED , and the background music during the action and comedy scene. But there are several illogical and mysterical incident which confuse the audience near the end of the series, which need detailed explanation. The term through the anime to support the fact about Shaman miracles (Spirit Possession, Furyoku, Oversoul, Spirit Fusion) are also added in the anime which are explained conscientiously.

If you are looking for a movie with lots of action, this is one of the anime you're looking for. This anime's storyline was a very interesting one from the start to the end. But the ending of the anime was a disappointment. There is no real ending to it, it is like everyone just return to their daily life and that is it. The ending for this anime is not grand enough.
But other then the ending it was ok. The scenery and the color were blended quite well together and it matches the emotions at the moment. The friendship between the characters of this anime is just so touching. How they became from enemy to friends.
What I like the most about this anime is that way they battle other characters using their "ghosts" and combine them with items. It is something new rather then the usual battle using normal guns or swords.
All in all, this is an anime which is worth the time watching. I could not stop watching one chapter after another for it is that interesting.
